Mysterious island draws tourists to Mexico
Mexico is known for its architectural wonders built by ancient civilizations. Recently though, a more unusual sort of attraction is drawing in tourists. The so-called 'Island of the Dolls', with hundreds of baby figues hanging in trees, has been drawing tourists to Mexico City's Xochimilco canals. Al Jazeera's Rachel Levin reports from Mexico City.
The Island Of The Dolls: The Scariest Place In Mexico
The story behind the Island of the Dolls involves a dead girl’s body, spirits and a man almost driven mad by his obsession.

ISLAND OF THE DOLLS (ISLA DE LAS MUNECAS) MEXICO'S MOST HAUNTED PLACES
Seen on Ghost Hunters, Ghost Adventures, and many other shows about the scariest places in the world. The terror of this location has stretched across the planet. The story is much more than an island of Mexican Dolls. Isla de las Munecas, or Island of the Dolls is one of the top 10 most haunted places in the country, and is found just south of Mexico City in an area called Xochimilco.
I hit up my friends Exploring with Josh Exploring with Cody to help me check out this urban legend. Awesome dudes. Also my GF Mariannela helped us out a lot with this. Make sure to check out their links below!
Julian Santana, the creator moved here in the mid 1900s because of heartbreak. He desired to just be alone, he didn't any intention on creating one of the most haunted places in Mexico. Upon arriving he witnessed a girl fall into the river and drown. That night, he heard horrible screams, and believed the ghost of the girl had come to haunt him. He began hanging dolls from trees to keep her spirit happy, he did this for several decades before dying of a heart attack in the exact same place the girl had died. Creepy, I know.
There are lots of things to do in this area of CDMX (or DF), but the main attraction is taking the colourful trajineras for a spin around the chiampas. This probably sounds pretty fancy, but basically it means jumping on a colourful boat, sitting and drinking beer while Mariachi bands pass by. You'd never expect one of the scariest places in Mexico is just around the corner, covered in decapitated dolls, spider webs, and ghost stories.
This was the 4th time I had ventured down to Xochimilco to find doll island. There are a few issues with the adventure if you speak english.
There are three ports you can leave from, make sure you go to EMBARCADERO CUEMANCO, the other two are full of scammers (at least from my experience). Also, keep in mind there are two Isla de las Muñecas. One is a replica, and I believe they built it because the original is much further from the launch point, and pushing a 10m boat through canals for 2 hours each way is a pain.
If you're a fan of horror or paranormal activity, this will be an experience for you. Just make sure not to get fooled!

“Let’s go” has pretty much been our life’s motto since we met nearly 25 years ago. We met in New York, moved to San Diego together, and married in Lake Tahoe – all within five months. When you know, you know – you know what we mean?
Now, after raising two adventure-seeking boys, we are ready to get out and explore some more. Our children have begun their lives and now it’s time to begin the second-half of ours.
We wanted a challenge and something fun, so we are starting an adventure of a lifetime. We’re calling it #60×60. Our plan is to travel to 60 countries by the time Kim turns 60 (that’s in 6 years by the way).

The Island of the Dolls Mexico
The Island of the Dolls is just a beautiful scene taken from a horror movie. Here is the scene I captured on my trip.
Arriving at the peculiar Island of dolls is not easy: first you must overcome the obstacle of fear and then, once on the dock, you must take a boat (trajinera) that takes between two hours and two and a half hours to arrive. to this destination. After seeing kilometers of lonely places, Finally you will appreciate this place and its incredible history...

Island Of Dolls in Xochimilco Mexico
Just south of Mexico City, between the canals of Xochimico you can find a small island with a sad background which never intended to be a tourist destination. The island is known as Isla de las Munecas (Island of the Dolls).
It is dedicated to the lost soul of a poor girl who met her fate too soon in strange circumstances.
The area has thousands of people, but this small island is home to hundreds of terrifying dolls. Their severed limbs, decapitated heads, and blank eyes adorn trees.
Dolls are threatening, even in the bright light of midday, but in the dark, they are particularly disturbing.
