Veria: 2500 years of History
Built on the foothills of Mt Vermion and surrounded to the northeast by the Pieria Mountains and the River Aliakmonas, Veria is widely known for its rich, long history. Here is Vergina (Aigai), an archaeological site designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the first capital of the Macedonian Kingdom, the place where Alexander the Great was crowned King and began his legendary campaign that united people and cultures.
Here stands the Tribune of Apostle Paul, “a global monument of religious heritage”, the place where 2000 years ago the Apostle of Nations conveyed the message of Jesus to the people of Veria. Additionally, 48 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, Ottoman religious monuments and the oldest Jewish Synagogue in Northern Greece are well preserved, proof that the city was an important religious crossroad from ancient times until today.
Apart from the monuments and attractions, visitors have the opportunity to experience a vibrant and dynamic city and taste the local cuisine, with influences from Asia Minor, Vlachs and Black Sea tradition, combined with the intoxicating “tsipouro” and regional wines and juicy syrupy sweets such as the famous local Revani. Nature, history and gastronomy become one in Veria, offering a unique experience to the visitor.
WII rescuer reunites with Jews she saved
(4 Nov 2019) LEAD IN :
Forty members of an Israeli family held a tearful reunion with a 92-year-old Greek woman to whom they owe their very existence.
The emotional encounter was the first time Melpomeni Dina met the offspring of the Mordechai family whom she helped save during the Holocaust.
STORY-LINE
An emotional encounter. This Jewish family owe their very existence to this elderly Greek woman , who sheltered them during World War II.
Dina saved Sarah Yanai and Yossi Mor from the holocaust.
The Mordechai family lived in Veria, Greece, near Thessaloniki.
As the Nazis began rounding up the Jews for deportation in early 1943, the family's non-Jewish friends provided them with fake identity cards and then hid them in the attic of the old abandoned Turkish mosque.
They were there for almost a year, but eventually had to leave because their health was declining.
That's when Dina and her two older sisters took the family of seven into their own single-room home on the outskirts of the city.
One of the children was Yanai, now 86, we were hiding in her house, she recalls, she saved all my family six persons and thanks to her, now she can see all our large family. All this, thanks to her.
Dina gets to meet for the first time the offspring of the Mordechai family.
Mor, today 77, was just an infant but he remembers the kindness of Dina's family they had to share the food that they got for themselves. They had to share it with us. We were more than they were , you see. We were six at the beginning, then Shmuel died. So really it is something unbelievable and of course she remembers it much more, much better than I do because I was small, I was a baby actually. But here and there, I remember a few things he says.
Shortly after, Dina's sisters and their relatives helped them flee in various directions. They provided them with clothing before their departure.
The family reunited after liberation, and eventually made its way to Israel where the children built families of their own.
About 6 million European Jews were killed by German Nazis and their collaborators during World War II.
More than 27,000, including some 355 from Greece, have been recognized as Righteous Among the Nations, Israel's highest honor to those non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust.
The most famous cases are Oskar Schindler, whose efforts to save more than 1,000 Jews were documented in Steven Spielberg's 1993 film Schindler's List, and Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who is credited for having saved at least 20,000 Jews before mysteriously disappearing.
The names of those honored for refusing to be indifferent to the genocide are engraved along an avenue of trees at the Jerusalem memorial. Only a few hundred are believed to still be alive.
Joel Zisenwine, director of the Righteous Among the Nations says It's a very moving story because we have a case here where an extended Greek family, several generations took part in a rescue action in order to save a Jewish family and what we see here is moving in the sense that we have the evidence to an ongoing kind of relationship of the rescuers with the survivors and their descendants. There's an ongoing form of paying tribute than simply saying thanks.
She said her organization has been doing such reunions every year since 1992, but this one was likely the last of its kind and therefore particularly emotional.

TREZOROS The Lost Jews of Kastoria
One Story Speaks for Many
This deeply moving documentary illuminates the lives of a Sephardic community in Greece whose story speaks for all people who have been displaced and wronged by war and discrimination.
The story is set in the beautiful and idyllic city of Kastoria where Jews and Christians lived in harmony for over two millennia. In October 1940 this would all change after the invasion of Greece by Axis forces. Initially occupied by Italy, the Jewish community remained safe- but after Mussolini fell from power the Nazis took control of the town, dooming the community that had existed since the times of the Roman Empire.
The film uses never-before-seen archival footage, vibrantly bringing to life just one of the many Jewish communities that had existed in Greece before the end of World War II. “Trezoros” (Ladino/Judeo Spanish term of endearment meaning “Treasures”) is a highly emotional story told by it’s survivors, with interviews filmed on location in Kastoria, Thessaloniki, Athens, Tsur Moshe, Tel Aviv, Miami, Los Angeles and New York.

The Greek Torch Continues to Shine in Our Everyday Life - Friends of the Arboretum Lecture
Presented by Constantinos Sfikas, Licensed Professional Guide, Professor at National Guiding School, and Program Director at Hellenic Educational Travel Services
Life in Ancient Greece was centered on the Aegean Sea, and gave us our first western civilizations-the Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean. The founding of city states like Corinth, Athens, and Sparta gave us a wealth of literature, philosophy, theater, and art as well as the beginnings of democracy, culminating in the classical period. Alexander the Great spread this Greek spirit throughout the known world. The Greco-Roman civilization established the foundations of the political systems we know today. St. Paul, helped by the Greek language and the Pax Romana, spread the message of Christianity, forever changing the face of the world.
Constantinos Sfikas teaches a summer course for Duke University students and leads many educational programs, like the Road Scholar tours.

Identifying True Worship, Part 3: David Splane's explanation of the Overlapping Generations doctrine

In 2010, the Organization of Jehovah's Witnesses attempted to explain Matthew 24:34 using a novel approach. This was later modified in 2014 in an even more novel way. The question is: Is this doctrinal interpretation Biblical accurate or the fantasy of men?
Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God
Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals.
