Jordaan Amsterdam
Jordaan is a neighbourhood in the heart of Amsterdam’s famous Canal Ring. It used to be a working class neighbourhood and has since become one of the most upscale locations in The Netherlands. The name ‘Jordaan’ comes either from the French word for garden (jardin) or the Dutch word for the river Jordan. Rembrandt lived in the Jordaan for the last part of his life and he’s buried in the Westerkerk just beyond the neighbourhood’s official borders.
The most widely-known place in the Jordaan is the Anne Frank House where Anne Frank and her family lived in hiding for more than two years during the Nazi occupation of Holland. This building, where Anne wrote her famous diary, became a national monument in 1957. I read The Diary of a Young Girl at about the same age Anne was when she wrote it and it has stayed with them, as it has with many people. The House is very busy so make sure to buy tickets online in advance, up to two months ahead, to be sure you get inside.
Across from the Anne Frank House is a micro-neighbourhood within the Jordaan called the Little 9 Streets. It’s actually three streets that cross two canals which splits them into nine little streets. There are lots of adorable shops and restaurants. One unique shop is called No Boys Allowed. It’s a sneaker store which sells women’s sneakers in women’s sizes only. They also get exclusive releases from brands like Nike, Adidas, and Puma.
One of my favourite places I stumbled across in the Jordaan is a place called The Mouse Mansion Shop and Studio. The window displays are ridiculously charming! It’s a family business run by a mother and her four adult children. They write stories about a world of mouse characters they’ve created, build sets for the stories, and photograph them for books and videos. They sell the books, along with merchandise and toys, around the world. The sets are like dollhouses and extremely detailed - they can take years to build! The mice and their world is incredibly sweet and it’s a place I was glad to come across so randomly.
My other favourite memory from the Jordaan was getting a coffee and sitting on the terrace of a cafe called De Vergulde Gaper. It’s located across from the canal in an old drug store. It’s an ideal spot to sit and soak in the bicycles, the bridges, and all the sights that make Amsterdam so unique.
This neighbourhood was a true highlight from my trip to Amsterdam and I loved spending time there. Does it look like a place you’d like to visit? If you’ve already been, what were your highlights? I’d love to hear so please leave a comment down below and tell me!

What to do in Amsterdam - The Jordaan
This video takes you from the backside of The Royal Palace to the Jordaan. The Jordaan is a famous district because of its history, relaxed atmosphere, galleries, various restaurants and specialty shops. The Jordaan is clustered between the four canals of the Prinsengracht, Lijnbaansgracht, Passeerdersgracht and Brouwersgracht. On the many bridges over the canals, you can take beautiful pictures and you will understand why Amsterdam is called the Venice of the North.
The Jordaan was built in the early 17th century for the working class and immigrants. A large stream of refugees from Spain, Portugal and other countries came to Amsterdam in the 17th and 18th centuries in search of freedom. Amsterdam was known for its tolerance towards other political and religious convictions.
In the 20th century, the Jordaan was still an area for immigrants and people with a low income. Around 1970 the city council had serious plans to demolish large parts of the Jordaan and replace them with modern apartment buildings. It was a cheaper option than renovating. There were, however, many protests against these plans. Due to the large resistance, the plans have changed. The Jordaan was saved from destruction and got a second life. The Jordaan, was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010.
Thanks for watching and see you next time.

Walking in Amsterdam | Jordaan - City Centre???? | The Netherlands - 4K50
Shot in 50fps this time and it seems to working well with all the lights in the shops and streets. This once working-class bastion was known for tight community bonds, radical politics and a love for drink and sing-a-longs. Gentrification of decades past has attracted more galleries, restaurants, specialty shops and upwardly-mobile residents to its scenic streets but there’s undeniably still a distinct atmosphere to be enjoyed here.
Rembrandt spent the last years of his life in the Jordaan, on the Rozengracht canal. He was buried in the Westerkerk church, at the corner of Rozengracht and Prinsengracht, just beyond the Jordaan. The Anne Frank House, where Anne Frank went into hiding during World War II, is located on the edge of the Jordaan, on the Prinsengracht canal. Enjoy the scenes in this neighbourhood ☺️

The Jordaan: My Home Away from Home in Amsterdam
While in Amsterdam, I always rent a bike for the duration of my stay and lock it to a staple (as the bike hitching racks here are called) in front of my hotel. A three-minute pedal away from the busy center puts me in the lazy, scenic, and mellow Jordaan district.
Amsterdam Food - Food Tour of Amsterdam Jordaan
Amsterdam food is great, if you know where to find it. Food tours make it easy to find great food while discovering a city. Highlights from the Amsterdam Food Tour: Eating Amsterdam. As a resident of a city it's easy feel as if you have a good knowledge and awareness of all the cool, happening locations and spots. The Eating Amsterdam Food Tour made me questions that assumption. Mainly based in the Amsterdam Jordaan district, the tour uncovered a number of hidden foodie gems for me.
This is a newly launched Amsterdam Food Tour which I believe will appeal to locals and seasoned travellers alike:

Amsterdam Jordaan district neighborhood walk
Originally a working-class neighbourhood, the Jordaan has become one of the most expensive, upscale locations in the Netherlands. It is home to many art galleries, particularly for modern art, and is also dotted with speciality shops and restaurants. Markets are held regularly at Noordermarkt, the Westerstraat (the Lapjesmarkt textile market) and Lindengracht.
Amsterdam Jordaan - SECRET GARDENS
Amsterdam's Secret Gardens : Hofjes and the JORDAAN. Whilst out and about in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam I take a look at some of the little streets and investigate a couple of hidden hofjes (Secret Gardens), enjoy a cat BBQ and check out what lies across the Prinsengracht, in some great second hand shops and antique stores. Beware of YUP's and HIPSTERS haha.
Lets find Johnny Jordaan, Tante Leen, and Willy Alberti, and enjoy a good old knees up. All together now....
Jordaan name could mean Garden (French) or maybe crossing the River Jordan? Because of local dry sarcastic humor, I believe the latter.
This video is just a fun walk and tour of the Jordaan, if this is not your thing, I suggest go seek out something else. If you enjoy my little silly video, I would appreciate any likes, comments, and subscribe for more of my silly Amsterdam videos. Appreciate any support. I do this purely for fun, amuse myself if no one else :).
Have a great day all. X
Amsterdam, Impressions - Netherlands HD Travel Channel
Starting from Kaashuis in the pedestrian zone Nieuwendijk in Amsterdam, Netherlands, we collected new impressions in this beautiful city on the day before the Queen's Day.
The cityscape of Amsterdam is dominated by the many canals. Since 2010, the Grachtenring (Canal Ring) is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
We cross the Singel, the Herengracht (Patricians' Canal or Lord's Canal) and Keizersgracht (Emperor's Canal), and come to the Prinsengracht (Prince's Canal) where the Anne Frank Huis is located. We pass the Blauwburggracht and Bloemgracht, considered as one of the most beautiful Grachts (city-canal), in the Jordaan district.
We admire the marvelous facades in the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, one of the first canals which was converted to a street and thus provoking intense public protests.
From Spui, a square is named after the former river, one enters the Begijnhof. The Beguines were the female members of Christian lay religious orders who led a celibate life and were at times persecuted by the Roman Catholic Church.
In and around the Palace at the Dam, preparations for Throne Change on the next day were being made, while teenagers already started the celebrations.
Two days later we briefly visited Chinatown, the Red Light District and the Damrak, the street leading from Dam to the Central Station with its remarkable entrance hall.
