including Panchakki) were erected by Turktaz Khan, a noble on the staff of Nizam-ul-Mulk Asaf Jah in about 1695 A. D. The oblong reservoir in front of the mosque and fountains were added 20 years later by Jamil Beg Khan. Dating back to the 17th century, this ingenious water mill was designed to use the energy generated by flowing water from a nearby spring to turn the large grinding stones of the flour mill. Shah Mosafar died in Hijri 1110. This watermill was used to grind grain for the pilgrims and disciples of saints as well as for the troops of the garrison. The water-mill is kept fed with sufficient water by an underground conduit, which commences from a well just above the junction of the Harsul river with a tributary stream eight kilometers away. After crossing the tributary stream near its confluence with Harsul, this water-pipe proceeds to the Panchakki reservoir. The arrangement is such that the water is made to fall into the Panchakki cistern from quite a height in order to generate the necessary power to drive the mill. The cistern lies in front of the mosque whose bottom forms the roof of a spacious hall. The cool chambers of the hall are used in summers by pilgrims, and is about 164' X 31' ornamented with fountains. The excess of water is let in the Kham river.[1]
A fine view of the Kham river can be had from the windows of this hall. There is also a cenotaph to the spiritual preceptor of Baba Musafir Shah and a tomb to his disciple Baba Shah Mahmood and a few other graves. A huge Banyan tree on the southern margin of the reservoir provides shade and adds beauty to the whole scene. In the North-West corner, adjacent to the cistern, is the water mill driven entirely by water power. It is said that in the olden days, grain could be ground without physical effort.
The country here exhibits one of the most picturesque landscapes about Aurangabad. The Kaula Nala skirts the garden, and is first crossed by an old bridge with pointed arches and then by a second bridge which spans it lower down. The walls of Begampura are to the right and the city walls are to the left, while Shah Musafir's garden is between the latter and the river bank. The garden walls descend down to the bed of the Nala; and the dargah and the accompanying buildings, with the cisterns and the fountains that are interspersed, blend picturesquely with the garden vegetation. An 18th-century library, housing manuscripts and a number of precious books have been reopened after 70 years here (Aurangabad). The library treasured about 100,000 books and writing pieces until Indian independence (1947). However, it was closed down in the 1970s due to administrative reasons due to which many of the library books were shifted to Hyderabad. The library presently houses 2,500 books on various subjects related to history, law, medicine, Sufism, religion and philosophy in Arabic, penned by philosophers, saints and scholars in Urdu and Persian language.[2]
Panchakki also houses the headquarters of the Waqf board of Maharashtra.Located close to Bibi ka Maqbara in Aurangabad, Panchakki is a water mill complex consisting of a court, a madrasa, the house of a minister, a mosque, houses dedicated to females and a sarai. The mill derives it names from the grinding mill used to grind grains for the pilgrims. Surrounded in hues of blue and shades of green, Panchakki is a perfect picnic spot and a much-frequented attraction in Aurangabad.
An underground water stream 6 km away from Panchakki, which is a tributary of Harsul River is a source of steady water supply to this structure and is transported through earthen pipes. One can only imagine the pure genius and farsightedness of the construction plan of this marvel. What is noteworthy is that even though the purpose of the building Panchakki was sheer utility, the beauty of it is not compromised in the least. The calm silver waters of the reservoir act like the sky's mirror and the gentle rhythmic ripples hypnotise the onlooker. There is a huge banyan tree, almost 300 years old, which stands tall by Panchakki, only to add to its brimming magnificence.

*BIBI KA MAQBARA*
The Bibi Ka Maqbara (English:Tomb of the Lady)[2] is a tomb located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India. It was built by Mughal emperor Aurangzeb's son Azam Shah in the memory of his mother (posthumously known as Rabia-ud-Daurani).[3][4][5][6][7][8] It bears a striking resemblance to the famous Taj Mahal,[7] the mausoleum of wife of Shah Jahan. He had built the Badshahi Mosque[9] at Lahore one of the largest Mosques in the world and the largest one at that time, as well as the small, but elegant, Pearl Mosque at Delhi.[5]
The comparison to the Taj Mahal has often obscured its very own considerable charm.[10]Due to the strong resemblance, it is also called the Dakkhani Taj (Taj of the Deccan).[4]The Bibi Ka Maqbara is the principal monument of Aurangabad and its historic city.[6][11] An inscription found on the main entrance door mentions that this mausoleum was designed and erected by Ata-ullah, an architect and Hanspat Rai, an engineer respectively.[4] Ata-ullah was the son of Ustad Ahmad Lahauri, the principal designer of the Taj Mahal.[12]

Best Marathi Abhang Ever | Ranjani & Gayatri | Raga Chandrakauns | Music of India
#darbarfestival | The young Carnatic singers borrow from Hindustani music, using Raag Chandrakauns’ spacious shape to colour an abhang (‘uninterrupted’ devotional song).
► Join our newsletter at for the finest in Indian classical music and dance, and watch full length exclusive concerts in pristine HD on the Darbar Player:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Learn more about the music:
An abhang is a devotional song in praise of Vitthala, an incarnation of Vishnu, who is often depicted as a dark young boy standing on a brick, arms akimbo. The word translates from Marathi as ‘uninterrupted’, referring to the form’s continuous poetic flow, which originates with ancient Varkari poet-saints of the Maharashtra region. They are typically exuberant, and are used to celebrate the communal experience of pilgrimage.
Here the abhang is set to the Hindustani Raag Chandrakauns, a spacious, distinctive, and comparatively modern scale. It cannot be easily classified into any particular thaat - instead it resembles Malkauns with a shudda instead of a komal Ni, to give SgmdNS. The shuddha Ni is played prominently, profoundly recolouring the mood. The raga becomes tenser and less introspective than Malkauns, lending itself to faster tempos. It is often borrowed into film music and Carnatic song.
Ranjani and Gayatri are sisters who sing and play Carnatic music on violin. They were born into a musical family and their talent was recognised very early (it is said that they could identify complex rhythmic patterns and hundreds of different ragas by early childhood). They trained within the family, as well as receiving violin lessons from T.S. Krishnaswami and vocal instruction from P. S. Narayanaswamy. They are notable as prolific song composers, and for fusing ideas from Hindustani and Carnatic music.
Recorded for Darbar on 17 Oct 2015 at London’s Southbank Centre

-HN Bhaskar (violin)
-Sai Giridhar (mridangam)
