The history of Albania forms a part of the history of Europe. During the classical times, Albania was home to several Illyrian tribes such as the Ardiaei, Albanoi, Amantini, Enchele, Taulantii and many others, but also Thracian and Greek tribes, as well as several Greek colonies established on the Illyrian coast. In the 3rd century BC, the area was annexed by Rome and became part of the Roman provinces of Dalmatia, Macedonia and Moesia Superior. Afterwards, the territory remained under Roman and Byzantine control until the Slavic migrations of the 7th century. It was integrated into the Bulgarian Empire in the 9th century. In the Middle Ages, the Principality of Arbër and a Sicilian dependency known as the medieval Kingdom of Albania were established. Some areas became part of the [[Venetian Empire|Venetian and Serbian Empire, but passed to the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century. It remained under Ottoman control as part of the province of Rumelia until 1912, when the first independent Albanian state was founded by an Albanian Declaration of Independence following a short occupation by the Kingdom of Serbia. The formation of an Albanian national consciousness dates to the later 19th century and is part of the larger phenomenon of the rise of nationalism under the Ottoman Empire. A short-lived monarchical state known as the Principality of Albania was succeeded by an even shorter-lived first Albanian Republic . Another monarchy, the Kingdom of Albania , replaced the republic. The country endured an occupation by Italy just prior to World War II. After the collapse of the Axis powers, Albania became a communist state, the Socialist People's Republic of Albania, which for most of its duration was dominated by Enver Hoxha . Hoxha's political heir Ramiz Alia oversaw the disintegration of the Hoxhaist state during the wider collapse of the Eastern Bloc in the later 1980s. The communist regime collapsed in 1990, and the former communist Party of Labour of Albania was routed in elections in March 1992, amid economic collapse and social unrest. The unstable economic situation led to an Albanian diaspora, mostly to Italy, Greece, Switzerland, Germany and North America during the 1990s. The crisis peaked in the Albanian Turmoil of 1997. An amelioration of the economic and political conditions in the early years of the 21st century enabled Albania to become a full member of NATO in 2009. The country is applying to join the European Union.

Albanian/Nat

For many of the predominantly Muslim Kosovar refugees, the Orthodox church is a symbol of Serb nationalism.

But in the Albanian capital of Tirana, one church has become the hand that feeds them.

The Sunday morning church service here has acquired a new status.

The Albanian congregation not only gathers to pray, but also to support the plight of the thousands of Kosovar refugees who have fled their homeland to escape the conflict that continues to ravage the region.

According to international aid organisations, 433-thousand refugees have fled from Yugoslavia into the already poor nation of Albania.

Even though neighbouring Macedonia has insisted the international community take refugees away from it's region, Albania has largely been willing to accommodate as many of their native kinsmen as possible.

The Orthodoxy has long been associated with Serb nationalism.

Serb nationalists normally consider themselves as defenders of the faith, but this church refuses to accept any suggestion that this could be seen as a holy war against the predominantly Muslim Kosovar population.

As NATO continues with its campaign and signs of the refugees returning to Kosovo remains bleak, the church has acted as a collection point for clothes and food donations.

The aid is later distributed by the church amongst Albanian families, who act as hosts to the refugees.

This church-sponsored refugee camp is home to several hundred Kosovars - most of them are either Muslim or Catholic.

The church is now planning to assist more camps within Albania, hoping to ease the refugees pain and suffering in the name of God.

#1. Tirana

The Skanderbeg Memorial is located in the heart of the ancient city of Lissus, around which lies today's Lezha. This memorial was built in 1981 to honor the national hero of Albania and to mark two important events for Albania's history. On the one hand, on March 2, 1444, Skanderbeg assembled in Lezha all the Albanian princes and convinced them to fight against the Ottoman invaders.On the other hand, Scanderbeg, who passed away on January 17, 1468, was buried in Lezha.

In the core of the memorial are the ruins of St. Nicholas Church, where Skanderbeg was buried. After the collapse of the Albanian resistance, the Ottoman invaders destroyed Skanderbeg's grave and the church was transformed into a Mosque. In the 1980s, a columned structure was constructed around the ruins of the church and a series of objects that evoke Albanian resistance were exhibited. At the center of the memorial is erected the bust of Scanderbeg. The memorial was completely restored in 2018 and got the appearance it has today.

STORYLINE

Leaders of Muslim and Christian countries celebrated the wedding of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's daughter
on Sunday, a gathering that the Turkish premier showcased as a bridge between the West and the Islamic world.

Esra Erdogan married Berat Albayrak, the son of Turkish journalist Sadik Albayrak, amid tight security in downtown Istanbul.

Thousands of guests attended the ceremony, including Jordan's King Abdullah II, Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf, Greek Premier Costas Caramanlis and Romanian Prime Minister Adrian Nastase.

The wedding came as Turkey is pressing to become the first mostly Muslim member of the European Union and Erdogan pointed to the wedding celebration as an example of Turkey as a crossroad between the East and the West.

Erdogan's government, which has Islamic roots, has made Turkey's bid to join the EU its top priority and the government often promotes the country as a bridge between the West and the Islamic world.

Many Turks, however, fear the EU may exclude Turkey because the country is overwhelmingly Muslim.

The four foreign leaders - two Christian and two Muslim - served as witnesses at the secular ceremony. In Turkey, only secular marriages are legally accepted.

Ersa Erdogan studied in the United States at Indiana University because she wears a headscarf which is banned at universities in this staunchly secular country. The bride's full white gown included a headscarf that glittered with sequins.

Many Turkish Islamists have pushed for EU membership in the hopes that EU laws might be more accepting of Islamic symbols such as the headscarf, which Turkish secularists see as a challenge to the secular state.

Caramanlis' attendance was another sign of improved relations between Turkey and Greece - traditional regional rivals that came to the brink of war three times after 1974.

The wedding took place amid extremely high security after four suicide bombings in Istanbul in November killed more than 60 people.

The attacks were blamed on al-Qaida.
