The Łódź Ghetto
The Łódź Ghetto
Situated in the city of Łódź and originally intended as a temporary gathering point for Jews, the ghetto was transformed into a major industrial centre, providing much needed supplies for Nazi Germany and especially for the German Army. Because of its remarkable productivity, the ghetto managed to survive until August 1944, when the remaining population was transported to Auschwitz and Chełmno extermination camp. It was the last ghetto in Poland to be liquidated.

Łódź ghetto : Gestapo
The location of the building where the gestapo had two offices for the Łódź ghetto is now above a chemists. This film comes to a bit of an abrupt ending as the battery went dead but I had said almost all I wanted to say anyway.

I am very fortunate that I can spend a large part of my life travelling, thanks to the business I chose to run which allows me to do this. There are a number of films here on the packaging industry. This is because I am the publisher of Central and Eastern European Packaging -- - the international platform for the packaging industry in this region focusing on the latest innovations, trends, design, branding, legislation and environmental issues with in-depth profiles of major industry achievers.
Most people may think packaging pretty boring but it possibly effects your life more than you really imagine!
Central and Eastern European Packaging examines the packaging industry throughout this region, but in particular in the largest regional economies which are Russia, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Austria. That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

I made a mistake when making this film. The grandmother of Jerry Springer was murdered at Chełmno nad Nerem in May 1942 after being deported to the ghetto from Berlin in February 1942.

I read the diary. It is the best and most real document of what happened in the ghetto. He was an intelligent guy. He knew what was happening and he wrote about it all.

Not all the diary remained, what we have today is only five notebooks of what the diary had when it was written. But fortunately what we have was rescued by a Polish inhabitant of Lodz and it give us the perspective of the reality in that Ghetto as seen by a Jewish boy.

I saw, we were all weak and hungry and we saw from his family, the father died, the sister died. Everyone had troubles but his might have been harder and the fact is he died from hunger in the ghetto.

The historical value of this diary, and of all diaries is extremely high because we are talking about the reality depicted in real time. This is not the testimonies given by survivors after the war which changed because of different reasons.

STORYLINE:
Four years before the Lodz Ghetto in Poland was liquidated, and two years before his death, Dawid Sierakowiak knew he would never leave the squalor and filth that had become his home.
In a diary entry dated 24 May 1941, the 16-year-old Sierakowiak detailed the torture he suffered from of a lack of food in the ghetto.
I'm damnably hungry because there isn't even a trace left of the small loaf of bread that was supposed to feed me through Tuesday. But what can I do? There's no help, he writes. Our grave will apparently be here.
Like his more renowned contemporary Anne Frank, Sierakowiak chronicled daily happenings in the Ghetto, which marks 65 years since its liquidation by the Nazis on 29 August 29 1944.
His diary serves as a testament to the terrors of life in one of the most horrific ghettos established during Nazi occupation. Sierakowiak died of starvation and tuberculosis on 8 August 8 1943. He was 19.

Nazi propaganda in the Łódź ghetto
The Nazis used these propaganda photos to show how well Jews were treated in the ghettos. Some 204,000 people- Jews, Roma and Sinti - passed through the Łódź ghetto, the second largest in Nazi-occupied Poland. At the end of WWII, only 877 people were still there. On Yom HaShoah, and every day, #WeRemember.
IN PHOTOS: Love and death in the Łódź ghetto
Mendel Grossman's photographs from the Łódź ghetto are a visual record of Nazi atrocities against Jews during the Holocaust, while also commemorating the Nazis' victims, including members of Grossman's own family. Grossman hid over ten thousand negatives in tin cans, hoping they would later be found. He died during a death march, at the age of 32. But Grossman's wish was fullfiled: The negatives were saved. Today, these black and white photos serve as a haunting testimony of what took place in the Łódź ghetto.
For International Holocaust Remembrance Day, #WeRemember. You can be part of the global remembrance campaign by taking a photo with a We Remember sign and posting it to social media with a #WeRemember hashtag, or sending it to weremember@wjc.org.

Tenement in the former Łódź ghetto

In the heart of the former Łódź ghetto, I find this tenement building that was once used to house the occupants of the ghetto. I was not the first to see it though, Agnieszka Holland used it in her 1990 film Europa Europa - or so one of the residents told me!
