LAGO MAGGIORE EXPRESS: Stresa, Italy to Locarno, Switzerland - Nomading About Weekly 3 1
In episode 3 of Nomading About Weekly, we explore a monastery built into a cliff (Santa Caterina), eat one of our favorite dishes on one of our favorite islands (Isola Pescatori), and head up #LagoMaggiore and spend the day in Locarno, Switzerland.
This is a sneak peek. Here is the full video:
This is the last week to comment on one of our Nomading About Weekly videos for your chance to win a postcard from us. We are writing postcards over the next week and we love to address one to you. Winners will be announced here on Tuesday, June 25.
Oh, and by the way, we do not count our day in Switzerland as visiting the country. By our own rules, we require spending some time in a country to count it. We can't wait to go back and do just that!
Enjoy this sneak peek into our week in Northern #Italy.

“Let’s go” has pretty much been our life’s motto since we met nearly 25 years ago. We met in New York, moved to San Diego together, and married in Lake Tahoe – all within five months. When you know, you know – you know what we mean?
Now, after raising two adventure-seeking boys, we are ready to get out and explore some more. Our children have begun their lives and now it’s time to begin the second-half of ours.
We wanted a challenge and something fun, so we are starting an adventure of a lifetime. We’re calling it #60×60. Our plan is to travel to 60 countries by the time Kim turns 60 (that’s in 6 years by the way).

What a wonderful day trip from Northern Italy to Switzerland. The Lago Maggiore Express takes you to Locarno, Switzerland from various points on Lago Maggiore via ferry.
After a few hours exploring Locarno, we took a train from Locarno to Domodossola through the Alps and then home to Baveno. It was a long day, but an absolutely wonderful day.

STRESA. The Best Place to go in ITALY. (Lake District)
We spend an afternoon exploring the islands of Stresa! Situated in Northern Italy, Stresa is on Lake Maggiore and surrounded by the Alps! Stresa has a few different islands and we visited two of them.
We started on Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island) where we had a pizza lunch and then explore the small streets. We also flew our drone to get some great overhead footage of the island.
We then made our way over to Isola Bella to spend some time in the palace and the amazing gardens, which are supposed to be one of the best examples of Italian gardens in all of Italy. While there we encountered white peacocks for the first time.
More information about the island, palace and gardens can be found here:

Internationally recognised as the jewel of Lake Maggiore, Stresa is one of the most exclusive tourist destinations on Lake Maggiore. In addition to millions of tourists, the Borromean Islands also enchanted Stendhal, Liszt, and Mendelssohn. Dumas recalled them in “The Count of Montecristo”, Turner and Corot represented them in oil paintings and watercolours, D’Annunzio even tried to rent one. Just across from the town of Stresa (in Italy), the archipelago is easily accessible in just few hours by ferryboat from Locarno or Ascona. It consists of three islands: Isola Bella with its grandiose mansion and terraced gardens, Isola Madre with its luxurious English park, and Isola dei Pescatori, a picturesque fishing village boasting an ancient atmosphere.
Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island): It is the smallest and quaintest of the three islands, and the only one with permanent residents. The restaurants on the island offer menus based on the typical cuisine of the lake.
Isola Bella (Beatiful Island): dominated by its magnificent Baroque palazzo, which is accompanied by a luxuriant Italian-style garden laid out over ten terraces, 37 meters high. The garden displays exotic plants of great rarity and many strikingly lovely flowers, alongside statues, fountains and the Unicorn, depicted in the coat-of-arms of the aristocratic Borromeo family. There are also beautiful white peacocks, free to roam the gardens, which with their regal bearing contribute to giving Isola Bella the flavour of past times.

Stresa, Lake Maggiore, Travel In Northern Italy
Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, is one of the most popular Lake District resorts in northern Italy. With a beautiful lakeside environment, it is the liveliest of the Lake Maggiore towns.
Several lovely Pallazi adorn the town. A colorful old town district is fun to explore, and boats of all sorts take visitors on excursions.
The Borromean Islands are the most famous sight. Please see our Borromean Islands video for more.
Lago Maggiore Express
Lago Maggiore Express gave an unforgettable journey by train and ship. For an hour and a half we travelled to Locarno through a wild and romantic region with the Centovalli railway through the Centovalli/valle Vigezzo (one hundred valleys): meadows alternate with daring bridges, streams of the purest water, vineyards, chestnut forests with villages clinging to mountain slopes.
Then we navigated across the Lago Maggiore for three hours, to admire the Borromeo Islands, the Cannero castles and the Brissago Islands; a beautiful shoreline with quaint villages and picturesque bays back to Stresa.

One day we went on the Lake Maggiore Express, leaving by narrow gauge train in Domodossola, Italy, to Locarno, Switzerland, with a stop in San Maria Maggiore. After spending the afternoon in Locarno, we then took a boat down the length of Lake Maggiore to Stresa. Great day trip for anyone in the area - highly recommended! - You can read about it on The Travel Belles here:

An Italian Lake | The Lago Maggiore | Lake Maggiore and the Islands
A 6K drone video (4K Ultra High Definition) of the Lake Maggiore (Lago Maggiore) in the North of Italy, on the Piedmont side.
Amazing views of the popular Borromean Islands, such as Isola Bella (Bella Island) and the Isola dei Pescatori (Fisher's Island), right next to the gorgeous villas surrounding the town of Stresa, a popular tourist destination.
Isola bella Gardens are regarded as some of the most diverse and fascinating in Italy, an example of Italianate baroque garden, which is a heaven where you can see statues and architectural decors set amidst the perfect green geometry of botanical treasures. Many trusted and capable gardeners trim, fertilize and experiment, preserving this place of wonders from the passage of time. A two-hundred-years-old camphor tree welcomes you at the garden's entrance. Crossing the gate, you will experience the breath-taking panorama of the Amphitheater in the middle of the island. This Italian garden with a baroque taste spreads on parterres and terraces placed at different heights and sprinkled with statues, obelisks, ageless stone stairs and balustrades. This results in an impressive view, displaying the power and magnificence of the noble house.
Also featuring the Lombardy side near Laveno Mombello and Cerro and some of the villas, mostly English from the end of the 19th century.

The hotel is on the lake front and only 5-minute from the lake boats and Stresa town centre.

Places to see in ( Stresa - Italy )
Places to see in ( Stresa - Italy )
Stresa is a resort town on Italy’s Lake Maggiore. Landmark buildings include Villa Pallavicino, with its gardens and zoo, and the Grand Hôtel des Îles Borromées, where author Hemingway once stayed. Boats run from the waterfront to the Borromean Islands, home to palazzos, villas, a fishing port and the Museum of Dolls and Toys. Overlooking the lake, Monte Mottarone features a bobsled rollercoaster and botanic gardens.
Perhaps more than any other Lake Maggiore town, Stresa, with a ringside view of sunrise over the lake, captures the lake's prevailing air of elegance and bygone decadence. This is most evident in the string of belle époque confections along the waterfront, a legacy of the town’s easy access from Milan, which has made it a favourite for artists and writers since the late 19th century.
People still stream into Stresa to meander along its promenade and explore the little hive of cobbled streets in its old centre (especially pleasant for a coffee break is shady Piazza Cadorna).
The little town of Stresa overlooks Lake Maggiore in a rather charming position near the gulf home to the scenic Borromean Islands of Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola dei Pescatori (Bella Island, Madre Island and Pescatori Island). This peculiarity along with a mild climate and harmoniously-combined scenic and architectural beauties attract thousands of tourists every year, making this town one of the most popular Italian tourist destinations since the second half of the 1900’s.
Numerous events enlivening the city’s bubbly cultural and musical life include Stresa Festival (formerly Settimane Musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore). The lakeside promenade is ideal for relaxing strolls and is flanked by historic homes and luxurious hotels in Liberty style, all surrounded by nature. Popular, thriving, lively meeting places in Stresa include the square at the landing stage and Piazza Marconi.
The first reference to Stresa appears on a parchment from 998. It refers to the town under the name of Strixia, a term of probable Lombard origin meaning little strip of land. In the 15th century, the little village was mostly inhabited by fishermen and was a fief under the Visconti family and later acquired by the Borromeo family. Starting in the 1900’s, the little town was chosen as a stop on the Grand Tour by several intellectuals including Lord Byron, Stendhal and Charles Dickens.
The neoclassical Parish Church of Sant’Ambrogio and its 18th-century canvases are in the old town centre. Standing out to the right is well-known Villa Ducale dating back to the end of the 18th century and built in the same style. Not far from there is Palazzo dei Congressi. This modern well-equipped convention centre is the seat of the cited music festival. This important event on the European classical music scene includes performances by world-renowned artists and bands. Exclusive houses include 19th-century Villa Pallavicino and its well-known park, which was transformed into a zoological park in the 1950’s to attract young and old alike.
