Southend on sea 31/08/2018
Southend-on-Sea is a resort town on the Thames Estuary in Essex, southeast England. The long Southend Pier is serviced by a small train and has a museum at its shore end. Nearby, Adventure Island is an amusement park with fairground rides and water slides. The Cliff Lift, a century-old funicular, clings to the hillside and offers coastal views. Sea Life Adventure aquarium is home to otters, clownfish and turtles.
The Kursaal site was opened in 1894 by father and son Alfred and Bernard Wiltshire Tollhurst on four acres of land purchased the previous year, as the 'Marine Park and Gardens'. In July 1901, they opened a grand entrance pavilion, the Kursaal Palace, designed by George Sherrin and John Clarke, containing a circus, ballroom, arcade, dining hall and billiard room. The word Kursaal is German, meaning a Cure Hall or spa, and it seems to have been adapted to mean a place of healthy amusement. Southend's Kursaal became the largest fairground in the south of England.
Post-war period (1948)
In 1948 C. J. Morehouse II took over the Kursaal from the trustees.[ The ballroom of the Kursaal had hosted all manner of musical artistes following its opening in 1901. During the 1970's it made its name as Southend's preeminent rock music venue, showcasing internationally successful acts such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, Queen and AC/DC

707s at Southend - Part Three
Boeing 707 ST-AKW and 9XR-JA / P4-ESP at London Southend in the 1990s.
Southend's relatively short runway of 5266 feet imposed severe limits on the types and loadings of aircraft, particularly jets, using the airport.
707s came in for maintenance, storage, repainting or scrapping, and departure was usually lightly loaded for a short hop to a larger airport where it would fill up for it's onward journey.
The departure of ST-AKW with enough fuel to take it non-stop to Khartoum, Sudan was surprising, and unfortunately I was not in the best location to video the take off, which took the runway to it's limits.
ST-AKW is seen later in 1994 with it's new operators, Azza Air Transport. It continued in service until October 21 2009, when it crashed soon after take off from Shajah, United Arab Emirates, with the loss of all six lives on board.
9XR-JA of Air Rwana, later RwandAir, arrived at Southend during a time of terrible turmoil in it's home country, and was inactive for a long time. It later became P4-ESP of Espace Aviation Services.
The sudden left turn of P4-ESP after take off was another surprise!

Southend on Sea | Longest pier in the world | Day trip | VLOG ☀️
Hi guys,
In this video Harry, Carl, Alesha, Lola and I meet up and visit Southend on Sea ! ????????
From where we live in Surrey it took us just under 2 hours to get there. ????????
We crossed the Dartford tunnel for the first time and came back through the Dartford bridge.
We visit the town centre of Southend on Sea and make our way to the sea front. ☀️
Sadly no dogs are allowed in the pleasure park and and on the pier. ????????
We then get a quick nibble at The Alex on Alexandra Road and make our way back home ???? ????

Last Flights of the Viscount - 28 July 1996 - Southend Airport
With the Viscount about to go out of service as an airliner, British World (formerly BAF) staged a number of 'Final Flights' of the type out of Southend Airport, Essex. Our flight was entirely filled by Vulcan Restoration Trust members - hence Vulcan XL426 also being on show. The pilot threw it from wing-down to opposite wing-down to give each side a great view of London below, including Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Westminster

Southend-on-Sea - Western Esplanade and Cliff Gardens
The charming seaside resort of Southend-on-Sea, which - as so many of its kind - grew out of a former fishing village, according to Wikipedi actually is the seventh most densely populated area in the United Kingdom outside of the London Boroughs. It sports the longest Pleasure Pier in the world and Jamie & Jimmy´s Café, which, however, is not a real café but only ever used as a filmset twice a year. Southend never knew the popularity of Brighton or its French counterparts on the coast of Normandy, but it does have its attractions and it is extremely popular with foreign language students who appreciate its proximity to London. Situated on the north side of the Thames Estuary, it lies just 40 miles (64 km) east of central London. I have just accompanied a group from Germany and we were regaled with the most beautiful weather. We were lucky to witness some filming going on on the pier - and nearly missed the pier train over it. The video shows the Western Esplanade and Cliff Gardens. Enjoying the latter is a bit hazardous at the moment. A sign warns visitors of dangers and other nuisances due to subsidies.
Arsonists Burn Down The Esplanade Pub, Southend Seafront Essex 23/12/2018 Major Fire Destruction
Filmed by Ruthie 25th December 2018. Very sadly the Esplanade pub on Southend seafront was burned to the ground by arsonists on 23/12/18. Apparently, this empty building has been targeted on previous occasions by vandals and arsonists who are clearly not right in the head. Please see my photo album to go with this video
