SUMMARY
=======
American cuisine reflects the history of the United States, blending the culinary contributions of various groups of people from around the world, including indigenous American Indians, African Americans, Asians, Europeans, Pacific Islanders, and South Americans. Early Native Americans utilized a number of cooking methods in early American Cuisine that have been blended with early European cooking methods to form the basis of American cuisine. The European settlement of the Americas yielded the introduction of a number of various ingredients, spices, herbs, and cooking styles to the latter. The various styles continued expanding well into the 19th and 20th centuries, proportional to the influx of immigrants from many different nations; this influx nurtured a rich diversity in food preparation throughout the country.
When the colonists came to the colonies, they farmed animals for clothing and meat in a similar fashion to what they had done in Europe. They had cuisine similar to their previous Dutch and British cuisines. The American colonial diet varied depending on the settled region in which someone lived. Commonly hunted game included deer, bear, buffalo, and wild turkey. A number of fats and oils made from animals served to cook much of the colonial foods. Prior to the Revolution, New Englanders consumed large quantities of rum and beer, as maritime trade provided them relatively easy access to the goods needed to produce these items: rum was the distilled spirit of choice, as the main ingredient, molasses, was readily available from trade with the West Indies. In comparison to the northern colonies, the southern colonies were quite diverse in their agricultural diet.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Americans developed many new foods. During the Progressive Era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, c. 1890s–1920s, food production and presentation became more industrialized. One characteristic of American cooking is the fusion of multiple ethnic or regional approaches into completely new cooking styles. A wave of celebrity chefs began with Julia Child and Graham Kerr in the 1970s, with many more following after the rise of cable channels, such as the Food Network and Cooking Channel, in the late 20th century.

Carolina Wren Song
More often heard than seen, the Carolina Wren's voice rings across its range. Sensitive to cold, these birds have increased their range northward due to gradually increasing winter temperatures. North American Breeding Bird Survey estimates a range-wide increase of 1.4 percent per year from 1966-2010.

How to Grow Watermelon
Watch more Seeds & Planting videos:
If you love to bury your face in a cold slice of watermelon on a hot summer day, learn to grow them in your own backyard.
Step 1: Start indoors
Start your seedlings indoors, especially if you live in a cooler climate. Plant two to three seeds per pot and choose the healthiest seedling for transplantation.
Tip
For best results use peat pots that can be transplanted whole without uprooting and potentially traumatizing your seedling.
Step 2: Give space
Give your watermelons space to grow. Seed hills in a row, and space the rows 7 to 10 feet apart. If you don’t have that much room, consider a smaller bush variety.
Step 3: Plant
Plant your seeds or seedlings outdoors after the last frost. Plant one to two seedlings per hill, or thin your plants to this number once they have taken root.
Step 4: Feed well
Feed your watermelon plants with fertilizers rich in nitrogen early in their growth, followed by fertilizer rich in phosphorous and potassium after flowers have formed.
Step 5: Water if necessary
Water your watermelons only when necessary, such as during a prolonged dry spell.
Step 6: Protect
Protect your plants and their roots by aggressively weeding with a shallow hoe. Stave off cucumber beetles and other pests with appropriate pesticides.
Tip
Use black plastic as mulch in your watermelon rows to reduce weeds and keep your plants warm and moist.
Step 7: Harvest
Harvest your melons after 75 to 100 days. Signs of ripeness include yellowing on the underside, a dulling of the overall color, resistance to thumbnails on the rind, and browning of the stems near the fruit.
Did You Know?
Some varieties of watermelon can grow to over 200 pounds.

Solar Eclipse 101
On August 21, 2017, the long-anticipated total solar eclipse will darken the skies from Oregon to South Carolina as the Moon passes between the Earth and Sun. The last time the contiguous United States saw a total solar eclipse was in 1979, and the next one won’t be until 2024.
Learn more about the science and significance of this phenomenon and the best way to view it—whether you’re in the “path of totality” or elsewhere (New Yorkers, for example, will be able to see the Moon cover about 70 percent of the Sun)—with Jackie Faherty of the Department of Astrophysics, and Joe Rao, Hayden Planetarium associate, in a discussion moderated by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium.
If you live near New York, come watch the eclipse at the Museum!

Alternative Approaches to Measuring the Quality of Life
Assuming that people are free to migrate, economists predict that any variation in the quality of life between different locales should be short-lived. How well does the United States currently approximate this spatial equilibrium? Most economists also take it for granted that the high rents charged in thriving cities are prima facie evidence that cities improve the quality of life for urbanites. If so, then why do subjective measures of well-being, such as self-reported happiness surveys, indicate that rural residents are happier than their urban counterparts? This session uses two different perspectives to explore how spatial differences affect assessments of the quality of life. The first paper uses traditional econometric approaches from the economics literature, while the second paper exploits subjective survey data on well-being and happiness.

Has the Time for Place-Based Policies Finally Arrived?
A Panel Discussion
Economists have generally favored policies targeted towards people, not places. But given the growing geographical differences for many economic outcomes in the United States, should we reconsider our attitudes toward place-based economic policies? If so, should these policies be based on tax incentives to promote economic growth and employment opportunities, improvements in infrastructure, investments in public education, or something else?

Building Amazing Homes & Mobile Spaces Using Shipping Containers!
In this video we explore and learn how to use shipping containers as strong, durable and mobile building blocks to create amazing structures of all kinds, like a house, addition, office space, or cabin; and we feature a few stunning projects to get you inspired!
Anthony Ruggiero from Storstac Inc. ( showed us around their yard in Toronto, Ontario and took the time to teach us about the ins and outs of building with shipping containers. We're excited to share the tips and information we learned with you.
Shipping containers come in standard 20 foot and 40 foot lengths, and there are other specialty custom sizes like the 10', 45', 48', 53' long containers.
Almost all shipping containers are made in China, and can be bought used (after they've been used for 10-20 years), or new, which means they've one been used once.
Since there are no shipping manifests for used containers to show what was transported in them over the course of their lifetime (it could be anything from clothes to nuclear waste), it's better to build with a new shipping container that's only been used once.
They're made with COR-TEN steel, which is a weathering steel that can withstand harsh weather conditions and elements like salt water because the rust on weathering steel creates a protective patina to keep it strong, whereas rust on mild steel would actually weaken the metal.
While building with shipping containers is not necessarily cheaper than conventional building, it does have advantages because the containers are modular, movable and mobile, durable, and have a unique, modern look.
They can be do it yourself friendly if you've worked with steel before, or if you find a company to take care of the steel work for you so you can focus on how to frame it and finish it from the inside.
Let us know what you think of shipping containers as alternative building blocks in the comments!
