Savannah Way - Part 2 (Karumba to Cape Crawford)
Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow.
Our road trip has been a simple mathematical equation
(2 x travel addicts) + (1 x Prado) + (1 x Golf Savannah 578) ÷ (corrugated dirt roads + water crossings + dust holes) = ADVENTURE!
We knew we had a couple of different routes we could consider for our travel from Normanton/Karumba over to the Northern Territory. We had stopped and interrogated the lovely young lass at the Normanton Visitor Information Centre and she dutifully informed us of the current road conditions for all road travel options. Armed with her expert knowledge and advice, we sat down ripped out the Hema maps and our trusty WikiCamps to research the travel distances, fuelling stops, camping options and POI (points of interest) to plan our adventure. We were mentally prepared for this 927km section across the rugged Gulf Savannah and we weren’t alarmed at the pending dirt roads, dust holes, corrugations and water crossings – we had conquered Cape York!!
With every detail carefully mapped out we set off along the Savannah Way to our first stop – Burke and Wills Last Camp. After spending considerable time exploring this historic site and reading the information boards, Michael concluded that these two expedition travellers were “nutters” that have been awarded way too much acclaim for their foolish wandering over harsh areas of Australia’s countryside. We also learnt where the phrase “blazing a trail” came from and were fascinated with the blazed trees around this historic camp. For those who may be interested, you can conduct your own Google search.
As we travelled across the Gulf region we found the changes in landscape kept us intrigued and somewhat amused, especially when we encountered large boulder precincts or groves of termite mounds …. it’s amazing what you will do when you are bored and searching for some light entertainment (watch the video to see the results of our encounter with some termite mounds!)
A map of the Gulf Savannah highlights the intricate and extensive river and creek systems that cover this area of Australia. We were astounded at the constant flood depth markers and floodway caution signs along this section of our travels. Of course, during the dry season most of these systems are merely dry beds of dirt, sand or rock. We were perplexed and found it inconceivable to comprehend this region in the wet season. Our overnight stay at the Leichhardt River highlighted the intensity of destruction that the water can cause to the environment – absolutely mind-boggling!
Our arrival to Burketown (Barrumundi capital of Australia) heralded a visit to a few POIs –
1. Visitor Information Centre …. goes without saying
2. constantly flowing artesian bore with steaming water (68 degrees)
3. the cemetery that gives an indication to the devastation caused by Gulf Fever
4. historic remains of the original Gulf meatworks and the Landsborough Tree (a fenced burnt stump and not worthy of a photo)
5. Burketown Pub for lunch + a lengthy chat with the friendly Argentinian bartender completing his mandatory 88 days of work as required for his Visa extension.
One last safety check of the car and caravan revealed a broken suspension bolt on the caravan – OH NO! Luckily the Burketown engineering workshop had a fine selection. Michael quickly replaced the broken bolt and we were safely on our way.
The Tirranna Roadhouse was a must stop location for Michael, he had previously worked with a guy who managed this establishment. We did one better then stop for a quick pic, we stayed the night! Next morning, we arose to a glorious sunrise and headed on to Doomadgee supermarket for some fresh supplies and a final stop at Hells Gate Roadhouse to top up the fuel tanks. This is an iconic roadhouse only 60km from the QLD/NT border and the final place for essential services including fuel and food (and YES …. Even a packet of Twisties). It was logistically impossible for us to travel to the next town (Borroloola) on this road without incorporating a night of free camping on the roadside beside a small, running stream (surrounded by dirt). Next morning, we broke camp early to push on through the final horrendous 150kms. Be sure to watch the video to see some of the creek crossing action and ‘lovely’ road conditions we had to battle.
Finally, we were back on the bitumen – safe and sound! We won’t bore you with all the details of our travels to the Heartbreak Hotel Roadhouse at Cape Crawford, but our arrival officially concluded our Savannah Way adventures - we had safely travelled across the Gulf Savannah with our Golf Savannah (and trusty Prado). But wait there’s more …. watch the video to see why we were beaming with delight and amazement during our stop at Cape Crawford.
Time to hit the road!
