BT 2017 | Gurinder Chadha | I'm British But... : The Many States of Film
Gurinder Chadha became a household name in the UK with the runaway success of Bend It Like Beckham, in 2002 the highest-grossing British film to date at the national box office. Born in Nairobi of Punjabi Sikh Kenyan Asian origin, Chadha grew up in England, and her experiences coming-of-age as a British woman in the Indian diaspora figure prominently in the stories and characters of her films. A queen of comedy amongst other genres, Chadha’s works progressively address the social and emotional issues faced by immigrants. Chadha takes time away from the premiere of her newest film, Viceroy's House, to tell the story of how the outspoken girl, who refused to cook Indian food, ended up bravely taking the film world by storm. Moderated by Ben Gibson.

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article:
Michaëlle Jean
Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written
language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through
audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio
while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using
a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Michaëlle Jean (French pronunciation: [mika.ɛl ʒɑ̃]; born September 6, 1957) is a Canadian stateswoman and former journalist who is the third and current Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, after succeeding Abdou Diouf in January 2015; she is the first woman to hold the position. From 2005 to 2010, Jean was Governor General of Canada, the 27th since Canadian Confederation.
Jean was a refugee from Haiti—coming to Canada in 1968—and was raised in the town of Thetford Mines, Quebec. After receiving a number of university degrees, Jean worked as a journalist and broadcaster for Radio-Canada and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), as well as undertaking charity work, mostly in the field of assisting victims of domestic violence. In 2005, she was appointed governor general by Queen Elizabeth II, on the recommendation of Prime Minister Paul Martin, to replace Adrienne Clarkson as vicereine and she occupied the post until succeeded by David Johnston in 2010. Early in her tenure, comments of hers recorded in some of the film works by her husband, Jean-Daniel Lafond, were construed as supporting Quebec sovereignty and her holding of dual citizenship caused doubt about her loyalties. But Jean denied separatist leanings, renounced her citizenship of France (acquired through her marriage), and eventually became a respected vicereine noted for her attention to the Canadian Forces, Aboriginal Canadians, and the arts, especially youth involvement in them. In 2010, Jean was appointed to a four-year term as the Special Envoy for Haiti for the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization.Michaëlle Jean was sworn in as a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada on September 26, 2012, giving her the accordant style of The Honourable; however, as a former Governor General of Canada, Jean is entitled to be styled for life with the superior form of The Right Honourable.

Gurinder Chadha was born in Nairobi, Kenya, then a British colony. Her family was part of the Indian diaspora in East Africa. They moved to Southall, West London when she was two years of age, where she attended Clifton Primary School.[1] Chadha's father faced much prejudice because of his appearance as a Sikh Indian, wearing a turban and having a beard. Eventually, the family opened a shop to provide the family with an economic toehold.[2]
Many of her future films would draw on her personal experience of being an Indian and English at the same time, and how she dealt with the duality of her identity. For example, she would not wear traditional Indian clothing, and she refused to cook for her family. In her mind, having all the women in the kitchen cooking while the men sat and ate was oppressive, although it is a living part of Indian culture. Therefore, she sat at the table with the men and was extremely outspoken.[3] After graduating from the University of East Anglia, Chadha attended the London College of Printing in 1984/85 and studied as a post-graduate.
Gurinder Chadha, OBE (born 10 January 1960) is an English film director of Kenyan Asian origin. Most of her films explore the lives of Indians living in England. This common theme among her work showcases the trials of Indian women living in England and how they must reconcile their converging traditional and modern cultures. Although many of her films seem like simple quirky comedies about Indian women, they actually address many social and emotional issues, especially ones faced by immigrants caught between two worlds.
Much of her work also consists of adaptations from book to film, but with a different flare. She is best known for the hit films Bhaji on the Beach (1993), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Bride and Prejudice (2004), Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008), and the comedy film It's a Wonderful Afterlife (2010). Her latest feature is the partition drama Viceroy's House (2017).

Gurinder Chadha speaks about her film 'Bend It Like Beckham'
Bend It Like Beckham is a fairy tale which is based in Southall, London. The story is about a Punjabi girl who is very keen to play football but her family things football is not a female sport. So the film is about the girl trying to keep her parents happy, her community happy, her friends happy, but also follow her dreams. I always wanted to make a movie on two topics. So Britishers love football and Indians love weddings, so through this film, I was able to bring both the aspects together.
Gurinder Chadha was born in Kenya and grew up in Southall, London, England. She began her career as a news reporter with BBC Radio, directed several award-winning documentaries for the BBC, and began an alliance with the British Film Institute (BFI) and Channel Four. In 2001, Chadha set up her own production company: Bend It Films.
