Sean Henry The Lightbox Woking Sculpture Trail
Internationally recognised sculptor Sean Henry returns to Woking, the place of his birth, with a show of artwork made over the last 15 years which will be exhibited both at the gallery and in outdoor locations across the centre of town.
Henry’s work is highly realistic and essentially modern in its choice of subject matter, colour and materials. His figures – often anonymous men and women - have an emphatic physicality which allows room for the viewer to draw their own interpretations, while deliberate changes to scale and colour imbue his figures with a powerful interiority and ‘presence’.
In the Main Gallery, over 20 sculptures are complemented by a selection of new drawings, which have never before been on public show. Five outdoor works by Sean Henry are also positioned throughout the town centre in a trail that will guide the viewer to The Lightbox. The powerful figure of ‘The Wanderer’ (2013) greets visitors as they leave Woking station. In Jubilee Square, the contemplative ‘Standing Man’ (2009) mixes with pedestrians, along with the large rusting steel platform (‘Catafalque’, 2003), atop which lies a resting male figure bearing a likeness to the artist. Inside the entrance to Peacocks shopping centre, the larger-than life ‘Woman (Being Looked At)’ (2006) mingles with shoppers. And inside Woking Station, ‘Seated Man’ (2011) can be found sitting on Platform 1.

Peacocks Woking Promo video circa 1995
Digging through a load of old VHS tapes I found this old promo for The Peacocks Shopping Centre in Woking, Surrey. I believe it is from 1995. Why they didn't film on a sunny day I don't know.

I originally posted this video on my other channel in September 2010, and since the I've heard Rufus Hound do a blog/stand-up thing where he starts with 'Come to Woking', and then go one to mention most of what I'd written for this video. I wouldn't suggest that he saw my video and lifted a few ideas as it might be a coincidence, but otherwise I'd like to say. I did it first Rufus - where's my BBC credit?
Come to Woking.
If you like miles and miles of suburbia, row upon row of Lego-brick houses as far as the eye can see, surrounding an over-populated and cramped town centre, then come and live on Woking.
Woking: because it is full of your favourite chain-stores and franchise pubs, but with none of the clutter of history, culture or unnecessary character.
Woking: where chavs are normal people; and being a single-mother is something to aspire to.
Whist in Woking, while not visit one of the nightclubs and get stabbed; or simply complain about the immigrants whilst enjoying their cuisine.
Criminal activity is welcome in Woking, as although CCTV cameras may be watching your every move, there won't be anyone interested in manning the monitors.
Do you like railways? Well, Woking has a fantastic and expensive rail system originally designed to remove the excessive dead from London, and now used to transit the brain-dead from Woking.
H.G. Wells once wrote about Martians landing in Woking and destroying the place -- a fantasy that I share, however, why would any intelligent life want to go there?
