The Elephant Orphanage Project is the first rehabilitation center of its kind in the Southern African region. Orphan elephants spend most of their time outside the orphanage to adapt to wildlife. Keepers help them to be saved and also feed them every 3 hours. Other people cannot touch the animals or be near them so that the animals don't get used to human attention. After the rehabilitation, elephants are moved to Kafue National Park.

Saving Zambia's Orphaned Elephants

A glimpse into the daily life of rescued orphan elephants in Zambia. We visited the Elephant Orphanage Project, a joint project between @GRI-Zambia and DNPW. We first spent time at the Lilayi Elephant Nursery in Lusaka, where the youngest, most vulnerable calves are nursed back to health. When they are old enough, well enough and ready to be weaned off milk, they transfer to the Kafue Release Facility in the Kafue National Park, which is where we visited next. It was here we learned how a team of dedicated keepers and researchers help the orphans to take their final steps back to a life in the wild.

Elephant Nursery opens in Lilayi, Zambia - October 2012

The long awaited Elephant Nursery Facility was officially opened in Lilayi, Zambia by David Shepherd CBE and His Honour, the Vice President of Zambia, Dr Guy Scott. The stars, as ever, were the orphaned elephants who despite having lost their mothers to poachers show an amazing resilience and love of life!

Founded in 2008 the Elephant Orphanage Project (EOP) has been built and developed by the project to include two main sites, the Nursery Facility in Lilayi and the Release Facility in Kafue NP. It all started with an elephant called Phoenix who was rescued by DSWF in February 2001 when, just weeks old, she was found trying to suckle from her dead mother. Against all the odds, Phoenix pulled through and became the catalyst of this exciting new project. Shortly after her successful release in the Kafue , Phoenix contracted bilary , previously unrecorded in elephants, and tragically died. The Release Facility was named Camp Phoenix in her honour and her memory lives on through the successful rescue, rehabilitation and release of new orphans which now begin their journey back to the wild at the recently completed Nursery Facility in Lilayi near Lusaka.

Lilayi Elephant Nursery, bush fire nearby

Lilayi Elephant Nursery (near Lusaka, Zambia) is open each morning for public viewing of the elephants. We visited on 8 August 2014, when we filmed this footage from the viewing deck using our Samsung tablet. At the start of the video, the elephants are calm and gently interact with the keeper. Notice the behaviour of young elephants after the keeper leaves them to go and fight a bush fire which had been started outside the reserve and was a risk of 'jumping' the road at the boundary of the reserve. After he leaves to go and fight the nearby bush fire they get agitated putting their trunks up to sniff the air, running around the enclosure and trumpeting loudly, presumably concerned by the proximity of the fire. He returns and they calm down.

The fire was successfully controlled and no person or animal was injured.
