Cycle Lincoln
Explore the historic cathedral city of Lincoln and the surrounding area by bike with Cycle England & Focus Rides
The city that gives Lincolnshire it’s name is actually remarkably different from the surrounding area. Based around a steep hill above the river Witham, it’s a natural citadel that’s been occupied since prehistory but rose to real importance under the Romans.
It’s been the commercial and government heart of the area ever since, giving it an incredibly rich historical fabric as well as a thriving modern vibrancy. Steep cobbled streets up to the beautiful cathedral are lined with half timbered medieval buildings housing every sort of eclectic shop, restaurant or pub you could want.
The bishops old palace, castle, town walls and museums take you back in time, the busy waterside area is a lively, thriving epicentre for fashion shopping and the latest bars and restaurants while the art gallery spans both ancient and modern just like Lincoln itself.
You can avoid traffic on totally flat cycleways that’ll glide you into the open countryside in a few effortless minutes, making this much storied city a perfect hub for a many spoked wheel of relaxing routes.

Great Tom of Lincoln
Lincoln Cathedral is widely regarded to be the finest English Cathedral. It stands on top of a huge hill and dominates the City. It is really beautiful (and as I am from Lincolnshire I must declare my bias). To see the towers rise on the horizon when travelling to Lincoln after a long absence is quite nice. The central tower once had a spire on it and this was for hundreds of years the tallest structure in the world!
Great Tom is the hour bell. There was a previous Great Tom cast in 1610, but in 1835 a new one was cast in London by Thomas Mears II. He weighs 5 tons and 8cwt and is now hung dead. When originally hung, Great Tom was hung for full circle ringing but when they swung him for the first time they reaised the tower would not stand it!
The quarter bells were cast in 1880 by Taylors. The heaviest is 27cwt.
You can probably hear my lovely old Accurist watch in this video!

A Gainsborough at White Oaks? Furman's Art Mystery
In 1975, Charles and Homozel Daniel purchased Portrait of Lady Impey from an auction house in New York City. They were told it was painted by the renowned 18th-century English portraitist Thomas Gainsborough. The Daniels bequeathed the painting to Furman and it was appraised, along with the rest of the White Oaks Collection, by Sotheby's in 1993. Without sending it to an expert in London, Sotheby's could not determine whether the portrait was painted by Thomas Gainsborough or by the artist's less revered nephew Gainsborough Dupont.
