Located around 28km south-east of Rethymno, in the province of Agios Vassilios, is the small, exceptionally pretty village of Spili. This beautiful mountain village, with a population of approx. 800 inhabitants, stands at an altitude of 430km.
The area is green and lush with many little mountain streams and plenty of trees. In the village square with its shade from plane trees, are marble fountains with sculptured lions' heads that provide drinking water from the clear, refreshing rivers of the Psiloritis Mountain.

Plakias began to expand after 1970; before that, there were no more than 10 houses. Today there are many small hotels in Plakias, apartments and tavernas to meet the needs of the multitude of summer visitors. You will find all you need in Plakias, as there are many shops and supermarkets, car rental agencies and tour agencies. However there is no bank, so make sure you have plenty of cash or your credit card with you.

There are also plenty of rooms and hotels in Plakias, so you will easily find what you are looking for.

If you prefer a panoramic view of the Plakias bay from above, stay at Mirthios, a small village clinging to the cliffs above Plakias with a wonderful view of the harbour. Selia, another small village near Plakias, also offers a panoramic view. Spili - tradition within splendid nature

Spili is a beautiful, traditional village impressively located at the foot of Mt. Vorizi which hovers over the town, and some 30 km south of Rethymnon town.ts cobbled streets, flowering shrubs and arches are a photographers dream.

Spili is known for its Venetian fountain with a long row of 19 stone lion’s heads splashing cool water into the trough below.Spili’s location in the center of northern and southern Crete is most convenient for exploring this part of the island with its various routes, especially by hiking and cycling. At 450 metres above sea level, it offers the most welcome cool evenings during the summer and an early spring at the end of January with a spectacular display of wild flowers; red poppies and mustard yellow flowers carpet the olive groves whereas on uncultivated ground wild anemones, tulips and delicate orchids bloom.

ΘΑΝΑΣΗΣ ΣΚΟΡΔΑΛΟΣ (1920-1998). Για πολλούς Κρητικούς το όνομα του είναι το συνώνυμο της Κρητικής λύρας. Γεννήθηκε στο Σπήλι και θεωρείται μαζί με τον Κώστα Μουντάκη ένας από τους σημαντικότερους δάσκαλους της Κρητικής μουσικής.

Situated some 30km South of the town of Rethymno, and approximately in the middle of the island of Crete, Spili has everything for the visitor who wants to experience ''natural Crete''. Mount Vorizi which hovers over the town is impressive, but wait until you walk up the side streets of this village to be really impressed. The cobbled streets and flowering shrubs are a photographers dream. In the centre of the village is a Venetian fountain with a long row of 19 stone lions heads splashing welcome cool water into the trough below. Above this starts the climb through the beautifully quaint village streets with their flowered balconies, arches, and cobbles.

Spili is on the main bus route between the north and south of the island so there are several buses a day. In the daytime activity is centred around the many cafes and tavernas dotted along the main street, and is one of the ''must see'' parts of the area for tourism. In the evenings you can relax, smug, knowing that you have chosen this village to stay in, and chosen well.

This is walking and cycling country, with many different local routes to see and enjoy. Spili being 450 metres above sea level offers the advantage of cooler evenings, most welcome during the height of summer. The days are hot but the evenings are pure delight, just watching the local activity and the sun going down. Bicycle hire is available from Heracles Pension, situation on the right as you near the centre of the town coming from Rethymno.

Spili has a special attraction those seeking the raw natural beauty of the rugged countryside which has inspired artists, painters and photographers alike throughout the ages. In late January, after a relatively short mild winter, spring bursts in to life with a spectacular display of wild flowers. Red poppies and mustard yellow flowers carpet the olive groves; on uncultivated ground wild anemone, tulips and delicate orchids bloom.

Accommodation in available for those wishing to stay here which in includes Costas Inn, Heracles Pension or at the nightclub Rastoni (which is perched on the hill to the north above Spili).

Safari club 4x4 adventure in Crete Land Rover preveli route

Our day is the perfect way to explore the southern part of Crete from mountains and gorges to beautiful palm beaches.

Our journey starts as we head towards the wilderness and high altitudes where you have a helicopter view of one of the magnificent gorges, where you can see the vultures soaring high on the thermals.

We pass through small traditional villages full of character and interest where we make a brief stop for our guests to take photos of the beautiful scenery at the Potamon Dam. From here we make the short journey to Patsos Gorge with its imposing rock faces and interesting features, whilst here we have time to enjoy a coffee and sample the local drink, Raki. Back in the vehicles again and through the mountains we come to our next stop. Everyone will be impressed with the village of Spili, famous for its spring water. Over 25 lion head fountains have cold mountain water running all year round, small shops sell handmade souvenirs and traditional hand crafts.

We continue on through dirt tracks, bumpy roads and quaint villages, where time has virtually stood still. After passing through Kerame our guests can see the panoramic view of the southern Cretan coast and the Libyan sea. After getting dusty and dirty a swim at Preveli Beach will be very welcomed?! Preveli is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Its tall palm trees and crystal clear water were even chosen to advertise Bacardi on television, it is the only beach where guests can swim in cold mountain and ocean waters in the same place.

Working up an appetite, walking back from the beach we stop for a traditional Cretan meal with unlimited wine. After lunch, we start the climb back up into the mountains for more dramatic scenery, and more photos as we drive through Kroustaliotico Gorge. As we head back everyone can see the entire city of Rethymno from the top of a mountain which can only be reached by Land Rover® vehicles.

This is a day full of many surprises and the excitement is second to none, you certainly won’t forget your fun day out on our GREAT

Beautiful villages of Southern Crete

Crete boasts a lot of beautiful villages. In this short video we present four of the most prominent ones. Spili, built on the slopes of a mountain, is known to tourists for its 27 lion-faced fountains from which cold water runs. Agios Ioannis is a small village with only 13 people. It is mainly used by tourists who want to have a night's rest before crossing the Aradaina gorge. Agia Galini is a beautiful village near the sea with lots of restaurants and taverns. Xora Sfakion is also a small village and important port particularly for those who want to cross the Samaria Gorge of visit the small island Gavdos.
