The Angel of the North by Anthony Gormley Completed in 1998 overlooking the A1 and A167 roads in Gateshead NE9 7TY Here's some amazing facts about the Angel of the North.
It is believed to be the largest angel sculpture in the world
It is one of the most viewed pieces of art in the world - seen by more than one person every second, 90,000 every day or 33 million every year
It is one of the most famous artworks in the region - almost two thirds of people in the North East had already heard of the Angel of the North before it was built
Its 54 metre (175 foot) wingspan is bigger than a Boeing 757 or 767 jet and almost the same as a Jumbo jet
It is 20 metres (65 feet) high - the height of a five storey building or four double decker buses
It weighs 200 tonnes - the body 100 tonnes and the wings 50 tonnes each
There is enough steel in it to make 16 double decker buses or four Chieftain tanks
It will last for more than 100 years
It will withstand winds of more than 100 miles per hour
Below the sculpture, massive concrete piles 20 metres deep will anchor it to the solid rock beneath
It is made of weather resistant Cor-ten steel, containing a small amount of copper, which forms a patina on the surface that mellows with age
Huge sections of the Angel - up to six metres wide and 25 metres long - were transported to the site by lorry with a police escort
The total cost of The Angel of the North was £800,000

England 2019 Episode 15: Whitby
The picturesque village of Whitby is positioned alongside a river as it flows into the sea.
The historic ruins of Whitby Abbey are perched on a hilltop high above the town. Founded in 656, the abbey was part of the Celtic church movement initiated in England by Aidan and governed by reference to the Bible more so than Papal authority. But in 663, the Synod of Whitby was held here, where Roman Catholic leaders effectively suppressed the autonomy of the Celtic church, leading to a predominantly Catholic England for succeeding centuries and confining the Celtic church movement to Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. The synod is also where the dates for Easter were set, as still observed to this day. Decorative corbels and other carvings from the 13th c. are on display in the abbey museum, as seen in the photo section at the end of the video.
Adjoining the abbey is St Mary's Church, dating to 1110. The tower and transepts are from the 12th - 13th c. as is the choir with its three rounded windows, while the rest of the interior is mostly from the late 1700s. The graveyard behind the church served as the setting for a scene in the novel, Dracula: “For a moment or two I could see nothing, as the shadow of a cloud obscured St. Mary's Church. Then as the cloud passed I could see the ruins of the Abbey coming into view; and as the edge of a narrow band of light as sharp as a sword-cut moved along, the church and churchyard became gradually visible... It seemed to me as though something dark stood behind the seat where the white figure shone, and bent over it. What it was, whether man or beast, I could not tell.”
The sturdy little Mary Ann Hepworth went into service as Whitby's lifeboat in 1938 and was retired in 1974. Over its career, the boat saved over 200 lives. Today, the crew offers 30 minute tours of Whitby Harbor.
After the boat trip we enjoyed a beer and a cider overlooking the river. The goofy cartoon cut-outs were outside the fish & chips shop where we had dinner.

Bell ringing from St Mary's Church, Whitby, England
Whitby is a small seaside in North Yorkshire, England. Rich with history, one of its famous associations is with the notorious horror novel Dracula. Bram Stoker wrote of vampire Count Dracula in 1897, telling the grim story of his departure from Transylvania and his voyage that runs aground on the shores of Whitby.
Next to Saint Mary's Church lays the ruins of Whitby Abbey. Both churches looking down onto the town chills the atmosphere, making Dracula right at home.
