Emily Kathleen Ansley (April 17, 1911- September 9, 2012)
Emily Kathleen Ansley. Born April 17th, 1911 in Seacombe, England. Passed on September 9th, 2012 at Eagleview, St. Joseph's General Hospital, Comox, British Columbia, Canada, where she had resided for nearly seven years. Emily is keenly missed by her family and friends. Emily was born into a family of singers, actors and comedians who traveled and performed widely throughout England. That heritage stretched back many generations on her mother's side, and her father also listed his profession as actor on Emily's birth certificate. Emily herself played lead roles in many high school and Little Theatre performances during her young adult years in Medicine Hat.
Emily arrived in Canada in 1914 after crossing the ocean with her mother and younger sister during the first year of the Great War- sailing without lights in order to evade U-Boats. They joined Emily's father, who had gone on ahead, in Saskatoon. Her father later enlisted in the 72nd Seaforth Highlanders Regiment, Canadian Division, was sent to France, and died in the trenches in 1918, shortly after the birth of Emily's youngest sister.
Emily grew up in a series of prairie towns including Saskatoon, Olds, Red Deer, Duchess, and Bassano before finally graduating from high school in Medicine Hat. Most of her early homes had no heat but for the kitchen stove, and the winters were bitterly cold. Many of the homes also lacked any water, which therefore had to be either delivered weekly in barrels or obtained in buckets from farmers with wells.
After high school, Emily attended business school, taught English at night school, worked in multiple roles at Eaton's, and later found steady employment at Lake of the Woods Miling Co. (Five Roses Flour.)
In 1938, Emily married her high school sweetheart, Frank Ansley, in Vancouver. They settled in Alberta, where Frank was a teacher. The early years of their marriage were spent in various teacherages in small communities (Maleb, Conquerville, Turin, Sundial, Taber) near Medicine Hat, where their first child, Clive, was born.
When World War II started, Frank joined the Air Force and spent the last three years of the war in England. While Frank was overseas, Emily moved to New Westminster, where her second child, Doris, was born, and where she helped care for her stepfather, Frank Glaze. Emily faced three years of caring for two small children and an ailing parent with the same strength and determination with which she faced all challenges in her life.
She continued to live in New Westminster for over sixty years- working in her mother's small Corner store for fifteen years and then serving as bookkeeper and general manager of Empire Music for approximately eighteen years.
Emily was a faithful member of the Christian Science Church all her life, and was very active in church affairs and on church committees. Over the years, she and Frank enjoyed bowling and square dancing, and their cottage at Crescent Beach. In all those years, Emily never lost her love for music, dance and theatre. She and Frank loved to travel, and in later years they had opportunities to re-visit England, tour Europe, spend time on Maui and explore China and Japan. They often reminisced about their favorite trip- to Egypt. Although Emily lost Frank at too young an age, she continued to travel the globe- with trips to Australia, Thailand, Taiwan and China, as well as frequent visits to family in Connecticut.
When Emily reached an age at which she was no longer able to live alone, she first moved into an assisted living facility and then resided at the ECU at St. Joseph's.
Emily never lost her sense of humor. When rain dictated that the annual barbeque at EagleView be held indoors, someone (knowing she was deeply religious) asked why she could not have arranged sunshine. Emily's rejoinder was You should have asked me sooner! When a critic of her son asked Where did you get him? she instantly responded I can't remember where I got him, but I've had him a long time!
Emily was predeceased by her parents, Hubert Helliwell and Ada Glaze, her stepfather Frank Glaze, her younger sisters Annis and Violet (Dickie- who tragically died at the young age of 20) and by her husband, Frank. She will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandson and her entire extended family.

A NIGHT AT THE ARGYLE THEATRE BIRKENHEAD PART ONE + TWO
This is a rare live recording on two Decca 78's numbers F.7319 And F.7320
of an actual World War Two variety performance which stars The Argyle Theatre Orchestra, Suzette Tarri (Comedienne). Ribton And Richards, Billy Russell (Comedian)
This was recorded during the Second World War and has many kicks at the Nazi leaders, ironic that only a few days after this recording was made on 21st September 1940 the Argyle Theatre was destroyed by a direct hit from German Bombs.
The theatre was never rebuilt and was demolished in 1973

Harry and Meghan visit Feeding Birkenhead citizens' supermarket
Meghan, 37, revealed that she is six months pregnant with her first child expected in April as she chatted to well-wishers in the northwest town of Birkenhead on Monday for her and Harry's first joint engagement of the year. She paired a Sentaler coat with a £1,695 Gabriela Hearst leather bowling bag and vertiginous red stilettos and, in a return to her signature style, the Duchess ditched the sleek chignon she's been sporting in recent weeks for a relaxed 'messy' bun as she and Prince Harry chatted to locals while arm-in-arm. Meghan's red coat, believed to be a new addition to her wardrobe, is from Canadian label Sentaler and the duchess has worn the brown version previously in Sandringham.

1991 Lily Savage Live At The Hackney Empire Theatre Complete DVD
This long since (1993) deleted VHS tape was Lily Savage's first foray into the world of video. Although the working-class, Birkenhead born tart-with-a-heart had already appeared on television briefly (on Jonathan Ross' chat show, and the news footage of the 'Poll Tax Riots', if we can believe her!), Lily, alas Paul O'Grady in drag, hadn't yet hit the mainstream of things, and was still largely confined to the clubs, so this venue was one of his/her first big engagements.
Salt Sunday 2015 - Blessing the Brine
Salt Sunday is designated each year by the Bishop of Birkenhead to celebrate the salt and chemical industries particularly of the Weaver Valley, Cheshire.
A feature of the 2015 event was a revival of the Ascension Day song 'Blessing the Brine' published in 1876 by Egerton Leigh. The event was held on 17th May at the Reaseheath Family Fun Day, Reaseheath College, Nantwich - hence the background noise.
The song is sung by Northwich folk singers, Ailsa and John Booth. johnandailsa.northwichfolk.co.uk
The salt making demonstration was given by Andrew Fielding and Tom Lane of Ecosal-UK. The brine was provided by British Salt. Peat was used as the fuel to evaporate the brine, giving a gentle peat aroma across the display area. ecosal-uk.org.uk
Thanks to Graham Dodd, Trustee of Nantwich Museum for starting the quest to find a tune to sing the words to. nantwichmuseum.
Thanks also to Nigel Creasey and Terri Clarke for setting the words to a traditional folk tune steppinstones.co.uk
Salt Sunday is the inspiration of the Bishop of Birkenhead and is organised by the Salt of the Earth Network saltoftheearthnetwork.net
The song is published in Egerton Leigh's 1867 book 'Cheshire Ballads and Tales of Cheshire'. The Blessing the Brine event is mentioned by Thomas Pennant in his travels from Chester to London in 1780 and by Joseph Partridge in his book of 1774 'An Historical Account of the Town and Parish of Nantwich'. The Blessing the Brine festival took place on Ascension Day. Also mentioned in Hall's 'A History of the Town and Parish of Nantwich', 1883.
The modern painting by Nicholas Ferenczy was commissioned for Nantwich Museum where it can be seen.
The chorus has been translated into French, Spanish and Portuguese for Ecosal-UK in 2015.
Deus abençoe a salmoura
