Places to see in ( Nairn - UK )
Nairn is a town and former burgh in the Highland council area of Scotland. Nairn is an ancient fishing port and market town around 16 miles east of Inverness. Nairn was the county town of the wider county of Nairn also known as Nairnshire.
Nairn is now best known as a seaside resort, with two golf courses, award-winning beaches, a community centre/mid-scale arts venue (Nairn Community & Arts Centre), a small theatre (called The Little Theatre) and one small museum, providing information on the local area and incorporating the collection of the former Fishertown museum.
Nairn has an expanse of sand beaches that were used extensively in training exercises for the Normandy landings during World War 2. The beaches around Nairn had landmines planted, during clearance operations in 1945 by 11th Company, Bomb Disposal, Royal engineers. High pressure water jetting was used to displace shingle on top of mines to make clearance easier. Notably during this period two German spies who had been dropped by U-boat in the Moray Firth were arrested at Nairn Railway Station attempting to board a train to Inverness.
The A96 from Inverness to Aberdeen currently passes through Nairn town itself. Fergus Ewing, Scottish National Party MSP for Inverness and Nairn (and before 2011 Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber), has been canvassing for a Nairn by-pass to be developed. Nairn Improvement Community Enterprise was formed in 2010 as a company limited by guarantee to facilitate the regeneration of Nairn Town Centre and its surrounding areas and membership is open to all residents.
The town also hosts the Nairn International Jazz Festival. Nairn is also the host for the annual Nairn Book & Arts festival which takes place every year in June at the Nairn Community & Arts Centre. Nairn is home to the Little Theatre, run by the Nairn Drama Club, which was established in 1946. Nairn stages one of the biggest Highland games in the North.

Unseen photos of Dad’s Army stars on set mark 50th anniversary of sitcom - Daily News
Dad's Army /form You have been watching them for half a century…and they’re as funny as ever. The men of the Walmington-on-Sea Home Guard first hit our TV screens in July 1968 and made Dad’s Army one of the best-loved comedy shows ever. To celebrate the show’s 50th anniversary, Radio Times has brought out a tribute book full of interviews and photos. Most of the images were captured by Don Smith, a Daily Mirror photographer, who also took pictures for the TV mag. Don, now 85, charted all nine series, and got to know the cast, crew and writers better than any other journalist. He says: “I was sent to shoot the dress rehearsal of the second episode… I had no idea what it was all about. “But straight away I knew this was going to be a classic.” Don then met Jimmy Perry, the co-writer with David Croft, and they became good friends. Here Don shares memories and unseen Dad’s Army photos. Who's the guest star? There were cameos from famous names such as Babs Windsor and . Don remembers Philip Madoc’s role as a German U-boat captain in the same year. Don says: “I was shooting the dress rehearsal... Madoc pulled out that little notebook. “So, I was one of the first people to hear the line that has since gone down in comedy history – ‘Don’t tell him, Pike!’” High jinks Some of the scrapes mirrored incidents Don witnessed as a lad in East Barnet during the war. He says: “I saw our Home Guard training in the park. They did gas mask training in the cricket pavilion. “Jimmy Perry must have seen something similar because in one episode, Godfrey rescues the unconscious Mainwaring from a smoke-filled hut.” In this photo from 1975 cast members raise a laugh as they ring the church bells. Gentle Godfrey Don describes Arnold Ridley, as a “lovely, gentle man, just like his character, Private Godfrey”. He adds: “Aged 72 when the series began, he was the only cast member to have served in both wars and had been seriously injured at the Somme. “I took him to the Imperial War Museum for an exhibition about the Christmas gift boxes Princess Mary sent to him and our brave troops in 1914.” Getting the bird Walker obtains pigeons to sell to butcher Jones in this 1972 classic. A report reveals pigeons have vanished from Trafalgar Square, so he hides them in the organ loft – until they wreak havoc. “This picture sums up Arthur Lowe’s deadpan brilliance,” says Don. All sweetness and light There are rumours of rifts among the cast but Don says: “I never saw any arguments.” He adds: “The cast surprised me every week and always made me laugh.” Here Don snapped Arthur Lowe, Clive Dunn and John Le Mesurier in series two. Caring sole Mainwaring needed his ingrowing toenails treated in 1973. Don says: “My son Peter came with me for the first time. Arthur Lowe saluted Peter, shook his hand and spoke to him. Arthur had a reputation for being pompous, but that was very kind.” Young Dunn Here’s Clive Dunn as L/Cpl Jones in 1969 in his

The largest World famous Halloween celebrations
Halloween Events in Derry/ Londonderry.
Welcome to our world famous Hallowe’en celebration, the largest in Europe.
They’re the oldest unbroken ramparts in Europe and have stood witness to over 400 years of Derry’s fascinating history, and this Hallowe’en the city’s walls will become a stage for a fiery production of fantasy and mythical mischief.
For three days October 30 - November 1, the Walls will provide the atmospheric backdrop for the Awakening the Walls – Citadel of Dreams production, staged by celebrated landscape theatre company LUXe, the team behind last year’s impressive Inferno at Ebrington Square.
This year’s show has a distinctly more ethereal theme, with a theatrical dreamworld of light, fire, sculpture, and circus antics that will completely transform one of Ireland’s best know landmarks.
Speaking on behalf of the theatre company, Mark Hill explained some of the thinking behind the Citadel of Dreams which is one of the key highlights in the Banks of the Foyle Hallowe’en Carnival.
“This year’s performance will have a distinctly different flavour than last year, and it will be much softer and dreamlike in its approach,” he revealed.
“A lot of work has been done around the theme of dreams, and in creating the sensation of entering a dream world for the duration of your journey. There will be music, dancers, aerialists, and even a processional performance on the Grand Parade.
“When the opportunity arose to perform on the Walls we jumped at the chance, as it’s the perfect setting for a performance of this kind. Last year’s show was very dark and mischievous but this year we wanted to do something in keeping with the setting and the sense of history.
“We use light to create some beautiful visual effects and it’s a great opportunity for people to explore the Walls by night – you never know what you might come across.”
Festival and Events Manager with Derry City Council Karan Leonard said: “The City Walls are the perfect setting for an after dark Hallowe’en performance, and I’m looking forward to seeing the final preparations for the show after last year’s atmospheric Inferno production at Ebrington.
“It’s the perfect opportunity to either walk the Walls for the first time or experience them in a completely different light – and enjoy an unforgettable supernatural celebration.”
The Citadel of Dreams is a continuous performance around the Walls that will take around 30 minutes to complete. Viewers can begin the journey at St Columb’s Cathedral, and the performance will be ongoing throughout Viewers can begin the journey at St Columb’s Cathedral, and the performance will be ongoing throughout the evenings, beginning from 6.30pm – 8.30pm on Thursday and Saturday, and 5.30pm until 7pm on Friday.
The show is just one element in a packed programme of family events taking place throughout the Banks of the Foyle Hallowe’en Festival from October 25-November 2.
Other highlights include the creepy Chateau le Fear, Ebrington Square’s very own haunted house of horrors. The Square will also host the Freaky Fun Fair with spills and chills aplenty for all your little ghosts and ghouls running from now until November 2.

James Mason - Home James (1972)
James Mason turns again to Huddersfield
Documentation 1972
Directed by Patrick Boyle
Looking back in 1972 for the documentary Home James, he says his mother's attitude to the town rubbed off on him: She was always reaching for a grander way of life that was more than could be expected of Huddersfield. By this time he'd come to value Huddersfield people: To me it's the way they talk, the way they build, the way they live their lives and above all, it's what they do with their time off. The town's rich musical tradition, the trips to nearby Holy Trinity Church and rugby league were all part of Mason's own childhood.
And, in its turn, the town has paid its own homage to this great actor. In 2004 another very well-known Huddersfield thespian Patrick Stewart unveiled a bust of Mason which now has pride of place in the foyer of the town's Lawrence Batley Theatre. There's a blue plaque on Huddersfield Library and there's another plaque across the road from Croft House which was demolished in the 1970s. There's even a close named after him in the same street!
