First 48 Hours in Africa Changed My Life Forever (SOWETO, South Africa)
My first 48 hours in Africa swiftly changed my whole perspective on the continent. I went to SOWETO (in Jo’burg) and hung out with a lot of great people. The two biggest misconceptions about Africa is that Africa is dangerous and that “Africans don’t like African-Americans”. Not only did I feel safe, but people showed me SO much love that I felt at home instantly. Soweto is ground zero for the fight against apartheid. It is the home of many great leaders, and is a cultural hub in all of Africa. In this video, I go through Soweto and attend the Locrate market that was similar to a block party with a lot of cool people.
The gentleman who showed us around Soweto in this video is Tumi. Tumi now gives tours throughout Soweto called “Meet the Locals” by Brewshack. If you’re in Jo’burg, I suggest you take a tour with this brutha to get an authentic experience of South Africa. You can contact him through his Whatsapp number (+27 61 410-9377) or contact him via Facebook. His name on facebook is “Bashemane Bobito Mofokeng”.

Soweto Ink Festival
Tattoos mean many different things to different people but it’s undeniable that they are very much part of modern, mainstream culture. With tattoo art growing in South Africa, tattoo artists come together every year in Jo’burg to build on a fledgling tattoo convention that boasts, great music, good food and, of course, some incredible ink.

Top Billing goes on an action adventure in Soweto with the Pooe brothers
When you come up with a truly original business idea, the reaction you most want to hear is ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’. Two brothers who did just that are Kgomotso and Suping Pooe, who figured that what Soweto needed most was quadbiking, paintball and go-karting.
They bought their first eight quadbikes, which proved such a magnet of interest that in no time they’d built a trusted relationship within the community, empowered local businesses and giving outsiders a unique view and grassroots tour of South Africa’s most popular township turned city.
What Standard Bank appreciate about this enterprise is that the unconventional thinking behind it didn’t need to reinvent the wheel – just relocate it. The brothers saw an existing market for these adventures in the suburbs. They put that together with the demand for activities in Soweto. They factored in the established interest of young, fun, foreign tourism in this city and they went for it.
Join Chris this week as he challenges Kgomotso and Suping to a round of go-karting and paint balling, as he experiences a Soweto full of adventure.
Catch all the action on Top Billing this Thursday at 7:30pm on SABC3.
