Passendale (Passchendaele), Belgium today
SEE MY TRAVEL WEBPAGES:
Passchendaele as a word has become in the English language synonymous with mud and an unending swamp through which men fought in 1917, forgetting that it is also the town of Passendale in Belgium. Strangely enough, whereas the spelling Passchendaele is obsolete in Belgium, it has been retained in English. This is because during the First World War, the French language spelling of towns was that which was used everywhere throughout Belgium. Passendale is located to the east of Ypres and is noted for its part in the Third Battle of Ypres in 1917, although there was also a battle there in October 1914 when it was captured by the Kaiser’s army.
To visit the town, I left my motorhome next to the New British Cemetery although I appreciate that not everyone wants to sleep next to a cemetery. For those who do not want to do this, off street parking is no problem.
Passendale is located on a ridge which today is not particularly obvious because of the vegetation, however one can stand at the highest point of the town and imagine what it was like with the vegetation and buildings destroyed and when this ridge controlled the countryside around.
We can find various war cemeteries in and around Passendale. Tyne Cot Cemetery is the largest Commonwealth cemetery in the world (you can see this in another film).
Passendale is a farming community. One of its specialities is a cheese for which a festival is held every August. Another product is the Passchendaele beer which you can see advertisements for in the film. It is brewed by the Van Honsebrouck brewery in Ingelmunster which is around 10km further to the east.

A German shell bursts near British cavalrymen in Flanders, Belgium, during World War I
A line of British cavalrymen ride down a hillside, single-file, in Flanders, Belgium, during World War 1. A German shell explodes near the cavalry column, just as two of the British soldiers on horseback pass the spot. After the smoke clears, fallen men and horses are seen on the ground. Other cavalrymen continue past them, as a British soldier, from near the camera position, runs down the hill to render aid. (World War I; World War 1; WWI; WW1) Location: Flanders Belgium. Date: 1917.

Belgium travel tip : Croonaert Chapel - Ypres - Belgium Flanders trip #Belgium
Croonaert Chapel Cemetery is located 6 km south of Ieper town centre, between the villages of Voormezele and Wijtschate. The village of Voormezele is reached via the Kemmelseweg (N331). From Ieper town centre the Kemmelseweg is reached via the Rijselsestraat, through the Lille Gate (Rijselpoort), and straight on towards Armentieres (N365). 900 m after the crossroads is the right hand turning onto the Kemmelseweg, (made prominent by a railway level crossing). 2 km along the Kemmelseweg on the left lies the turning onto the Ruusschaartstraat, towards Voormezele village. 1 km down the Ruusschaartstraat and opposite Voormezele church is the right hand turning onto a road called Wijtschatestraat. 1.5 km along the Wijtschatestraat on the right hand side is Croonaert Chapel Cemetery. Visitors to this site should note a 200 metre grassed access path which is unsuitable for vehicles.
Wijtschate, Heuvelland
Croonaert Chapel was a shrine in a hamlet on the Wytschaete-Voormezeele road; and the cemetery is 146 metres West of that road. It was in No Man's Land before the Battle of Messines, 1917. The cemetery was begun by the 19th Division Burial Officer in June, 1917, and used until the following November; two further burials were made in April, 1918 and January, 1919. Fifty-one German graves of June, 1917, were removed after the Armistice. There are now over 50, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, a small number are unidentified. The Cemetey covers an area of 455 square metres and is enclosed by a rubble wall.

The Battle of Messines - Explosion Beneath Hill 60 I THE GREAT WAR Week 150
In the early morning of June 7 the area around Messines Ridge is shattered by huge explosions beneath the German positions. Miners and sappers had dug tunnels and filled them up with tons of explosives. Up to 10,000 German soldiers are killed in this inferno. At the same time, the Romanian Army seems to be in shape for an attack against the Germans again and the 10th Battle of the Isonzo continues.

Beneath Hill 60 trailer
1916. Two massive armies facing each other along the Western Front have fought themselves to a standstill. The count down to the Battle of Messines Ridge has begun. The allies audacious plan to break the deadlock depends on a small company of Australian miners led by Captain Oliver Woodward.
These ordinary men from mining towns across Australia were given just two weeks military training before being thrust into the war. Poorly equipped, with scant regard for military etiquette, the miners task is to defend a leaking, labyrinthine tunnel system snaking beneath the Messines Ridge. The tunnels hide a deadly secret; a series of massive mines. If the plan succeeds it will produce the biggest explosion the world has ever known and could change the course of the war.
But no-one seems to know when the order will be given to blow the mines. With constant inundation of mud and water and endless vibrations from heavy artillery, the tunnels are in imminent danger of collapse. Disaster looms as the Germans discover the Australians underground activity. A deadly cat-and-mouse game is played out thirty metres below the fields of Flanders and, as zero hour approaches, the whole allied strategy could be in jeopardy...
Based on an extraordinary true story. Jeremy Sims directs and Brendan Cowell stars.

Duco teambuilding 2018: Escape game Ieper
