In the English city of Nottingham, shoppers and workers go about their days oblivious to the secrets beneath their feet. Underground, a vast network of hidden chambers crisscrosses through the soft sandstone. But these rocks have kept their secrets for more than a thousand years.
Amazingly, there has been a settlement in Nottingham’s location since before the 5th century, when the Anglo-Saxons arrived in England. Prior to this, the region was inhabited by Celts who dubbed the city Tigguo Cobauc in the old Brythonic language – which translates as Place of Caves.

Nottingham Castle is a castle in Nottingham, England. It is located in a commanding position on a natural promontory known as Castle Rock, with cliffs 130 feet (40 m) high to the south and west. In the Middle Ages it was a major royal fortress and occasional royal residence. In decline by the 16th century, it was largely demolished in 1649. The Duke of Newcastle later built a mansion on the site, which was burnt down by rioters in 1831 and left as a ruin. It was later rebuilt to house an art gallery and museum, which remain in use. Little of the original castle survives, but sufficient portions remain to give an impression of the layout of the site.
After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, the present 'Ducal Mansion' was built by Henry Cavendish, 2nd Duke of Newcastle between 1674 and 1679 on the foundations of the previous structure. Despite the destruction of the keep and fortifications of the upper bailey, some rock cut cellars and medieval pointed arches survive beneath the mansion, together with a long passage to the bottom of the rock, commonly known as Mortimer's Hole, through which guided tours take place, starting at the Castle and ending at Brewhouse Yard.
The mason for the Mansion was Samuel Marsh of Lincoln, who also worked for the Duke at Bolsover Castle. His designs are generally thought to have been strongly influenced by Rubens's engravings, in his book Palazzi di Genova.The Duke's mansion is a rare surviving example in England of Artisan Mannerist architecture.
However, it lost its appeal to the later Dukes with the coming of the Industrial Revolution, which left Nottingham with the reputation of having the worst slums in the British Empire outside India. When residents of these slums rioted in 1831, in protest against the Duke of Newcastle's opposition to the Reform Act 1832 they burned down the mansion.
The original exterior stairs on the eastern façade of the mansion were subsequently demolished to create a parade ground for the Robin Hood Rifles.
The mansion remained a derelict shell until it was restored in 1875 by Thomas Chambers Hine, and opened in 1878 by the Prince of Wales, (later King Edward VII) as Nottingham Castle Museum, the first municipal art gallery in the UK outside London. The new interiors ignored the original floor levels and fenestration to accommodate a top-lit picture gallery modelled after the Grand Gallery of the Louvre.
The gatehouse of the medieval castle and much of the walling of the outer bailey was retained as a garden wall for the Ducal mansion. However, the northernmost part of the outer bailey was lost when an approach road was constructed in the 1830s for the development of The Park Estate on the former deer park.
On Christmas Day 1996 a landslip, caused by a leaking water main, led to 80 tonnes of earth and retaining wall from the Restoration terrace next to the Mansion falling to the bottom of the Castle rock. This revealed some remains of the original castle foundations and the bedrock. After a lengthy controversy on the best conservation/restoration approach, the terrace was reinstated with a traditional stone façade. The terrace offers great views to the south of the city, and appeared in the film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, a groundbreaking film about the changing attitude of youth in a changing industrial society.
A drawing of the Ducal Mansion appeared on millions of packets of rolling tobacco and cigarettes made by John Player & Sons, a Nottingham firm. Most packets had the phrases Nottingham Castle and Trade Mark bracketing the image of the non-fortress-like structure. This led the novelist Ian Fleming to refer to that extraordinary trademark of a dolls house swimming in chocolate fudge with Nottingham Castle written underneath. in Thunderball in the knowledge that his British readers would be familiar with the image.
The building is due to undergo a multi-million renovation in 2018.

Now the site is occupied by a shopping centre and its car parks, and few people appreciate how the city centre back then could accommodate a busy train station. Using maps, old newspapers, 3d modelling and animation, Visualising Victoria demonstrates how the train station fitted into the streets of Nottingham's busy city centre.

The Old Market Square is an open, pedestrianised city square in Nottingham, England. Old Market Square is the largest such surviving square in the United Kingdom, forming the heart of the city, and covering an area of approximately 22,000 m².
Located in the heart of Nottingham City Centre, Old Market Square is bounded by Beastmarket Hill to the West, Smithy Row to the North, and South Parade to the South. The Eastern end of the square is dominated by the Council House, which serves as Nottingham's city hall. The nature of the Old Market Square means it is often used for large local events, fairs, concerts and exhibitions.
The Old Market Square has long been at the centre of Nottingham life. In the early days before the City of Nottingham was formed, the area was the centre-point between the Norman town of Nottingham, situated around the Castle Rock, and the old Anglo-Saxon town which was based around the current Lace Market at St. Mary's Church, also called Snothryngham, Snottingaham or Snottingham.
Redesigned by Gustafson Porter in 2004 and completed in March 2007, the Old Market Square renovations cost taxpayers around 17 million pounds. Not a single building was erected or demolished; the majority of the money was spent on granite paving stones and is built with three shades of granite.

The first UK gig of the Oye Esteban tour was a success. Morrissey was in great spirits and, being back in front of his home audience, he was very talkative. The audience was very receptive and energetic and there were a few stage climbers. The only downside might have been the extreme heat in the venue.
There was no surprise in the setlist. It had the same content as on the recent European dates. It was longer by one song however, as both Lost and Sunny were played. It usually was one or the other in Europe.
Morrissey entered stage at the end of the usual The Operation drum intro, followed by his musicians, and greeted the audience with Snottingham! (crowd cheers) It's grand to see you! Do you know where you are? (crowd: yeah!) Where?... After The Boy Racer he sincerely said I'm so glad you came! After Reader Meet Author he commented on someone whistling by saying I understand why you whistle like that After a very well received Hairdresser On Fire he teased the audience with I think if you have anything to say you should probably say it now... because there might not be enough time...
In November Spawned A Monster Morrissey interrupted his singing mid-song to encourage a fan coming his way: That november is a time... sail, sail sail! After the song he introduced the following one on the planned setlist - Lost - with the comment You know, your sweat is very much appreciated (crowd cheers)... however, this is the one that you didn't buy, so (something about knowing the words). After that song Morrissey asked You didn't like it, did you? (crowd: yes!) You can tell me, I don't mind... This was followed by a few greetings to fans who were following Morrissey along the tour: Hello to the West Ham Girls... hello to the Mersey Bruiser Boys... I take that back!
After Speedway, to a fan welcoming him back to England, Morrissey asked Where have I been?. After Sunny, in answer to the usual football chant of Morrissey! Morrissey!, he asked Do you know any other songs? After Meat Is Murder someone shouted meat is dinner! and Morrissey replied I strongly disagree with that!. He then introduced Now My Heart Is Full with This song is called 'Growing Up In Public'. Some fans must have been anticipating that Morrissey was introducing a new song because, as the first notes were heard, he asked Why is everybody looking at me?
In Alma Matters Morrissey sang it's my life to end my own way. In Tomorrow he sang tomorrow doesn't have to come instead of tomorrow does it have to come. After the song he cryptically said I missed the song, I missed it... When he was called back to the stage again after a short break to perform the encore, Morrissey said Thank you Nottingham, I really enjoyed having you. After his vocal part in Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me he repeated Goodbye, thank you, God bless you! many times before exiting, leaving his musicians to finish alone.
