The Lost Valley of Uggool | Mayo, Irland

Beach Riding on Laken Strand, Ireland
The McNamara's of North Devlin, County Mayo, Ireland.
John McNamara left Ireland for America in 1912, and never looked back. He said goodbye to his mother, father and six brothers and sisters, and never wrote or visited his family again. His mother Mary would make a daily trek to the post office hopeful of receiving a letter would never arrive.
If he had written that letter, she would learn that after his voyage to New York aboard the Cunard lines steamer Carmania, he would continue his travels all the way to Sacramento, California where he was met by William McNamara, who quite possibly was his father's brother.
William McNamara held an important position with the Southern Pacific Railroad and spent his time commuting between San Francisco and Sacramento. He was also active with The Knights of Columbus, The Ancient Order of Hibernians, and Irish Political activities, often honored with the task of delivering the speech from the dock at the annual Robert Emmet Dinner.
William opened his home to John and secured him a car inspector job at the Southern Pacific's sprawling yard in Sacramento. After several years of adjusting to a new life in a new land, Uncle Sam knocked on his door, and soon John was back in Europe with the 1st Engineers of the storied 1st Division.
As a combat engineer, John distinguished himself in nearly every major battle fought in 1918, including Cantigny, where he was wounded and gassed in the frontal assault on the town.
He returned to Sacramento, married Josephine Lane, whose father came from County Kerry, and raised three sons and two daughters. He died in 1946, probably from his war wounds. The obituary said that he was 50, but birth records show that he was 54, possibly 55.
I would love to network with other McNamara's from the Devlin area and find out what happened to his other brothers and sisters. This I know:
John McNamara, his father outlived him and died in 1947 (buried in Killeen Cemetery)
Mary McNamara, his mother died in 1941(buried in Killeen Cemetery)
Their children:
John McNamara is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Sacramento, CA
Nora McNamara died in 1909 (buried in Killeen Cemetery)
Patrick McNamara died in 1979 (buried in Killeen Cemetery)
Anthony McNamara died in 1986 in Boston.
Austin McNamara died in 1979 (buried in Killeen Cemetery)
I assume that these three siblings emigrated:
Michael McNamara born June 27th, 1904
Mary Kate McNamara born July 2, 1902
Thomas McNamara born November 1, 1908
It would be wonderful to find some new cousins!
Bunlough, (also called North Devlin) 5 miles outside the town of Louisburgh in the County of Mayo.
Guided by my cousin Michael OMalley, we found the family tomb stone in the Killeen Cemetery and the old house where the 8 children of John and Mary McNamara lived in the late 1890's and early 1900's.
Nova Scotia: The Twinning of Louisbourg with Louisburgh, County Mayo
In September of 2017, the Cape Breton (Nova Scotia, Canada) town of Louisbourg was twinned with another town in Ireland - Louisburgh in County Mayo.

Mountain Biking the Offroad Boglands of Westport, Ireland
To find inner peace and outdoor adventure we teamed up with Anthony Murray of Westport Bike Hire for an offroad Mountain Biking

Taking us off the beaten path we hit the offroads and bog roads of Westport, Co. Mayo for a challenging and rejuvenating 35km mountain biking challenge finished off with the nicest pint of Guinness we'd ever tasted. What can we say, here at The Middle Way we believe in balance ;)
The Greenway is a 60 kilometres long off-road trail which starts in Westport, ends on Achill Island, passing through Newport town and Mulranny Hotel as it runs along the Wild Atlantic Way and the coast of Clew Bay.
