Durdle Door, Dorset is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset, England. Eroded by time and nature, Durdle Door is one of Dorset’s most photographed and iconic landmarks. It is located on the Lulworth Estate in south Dorset part of the Jurassic Coast.
The magnificent natural limestone arch was formed when the power of the waves eroded the rock and forged a hole through the middle. The name Durdle is derived from an old English word ‘thirl’, which means to pierce, bore or drill.
As you look towards the sea, you will see Durdle Door beach on your right. Access to the pebble and shingle beach is on foot via a path and steps over the hill from Lulworth Cove or down from the Car Park (charges apply) which is located on the cliff top at Durdle Door Holiday Park. There is a coach drop-off at the car park, and coach parking is at Lulworth Cove (postcode for Sat Nav is BH20 5RQ).
My journey on the video starts at the Lulworth Cove car park and takes me over the hill on the foot path to Durdle Door. From a distance it doesn't look as steep - but don't be fooled - the climb is steep and can be difficult especially in flip flops! The views are amazing and it's delightful once you reach Durdle Door. An historical place everyone should visit!

Spectacular Jurassic Coast in Dorset, United Kingdom - Timelapse Video - 4K
Jurassic Coast, World Heritage Site, stretches from East Devon to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, a distance of 96 miles (154 km). Truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth's history. Jurrasic Coast gets it name thanks to the millions of years of history imprinted into the towering cliffs along the coastline. Even now you can still find pre-historic fossils while taking a stroll along the beach.
Some of iconic locations in this timelapse are :
* Durdle Door Sea Arch - attracts droves of photographers not just because of its dramatic location on the coast, but also the white-cliffs along these beaches make if by far the most beautiful all round location.
* Kimmeridge Bay - Locations where rocks stretch out into the water, and it’s one of the most popular spots to look for fossils on the beach thanks to the continual erosion of the cliffs
* Corfe Castle - fortification ruins standing above village of the same name, old defensive castle from Roman times - one of the most popular National Trust historic sights in the country

England's Jurassic Coast- Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Lyme Regis
Looking for the most ‘Mediterranean’ coast of England? Go here! It’s called ‘the Jurassic Coast’ – and it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site that stretches for 154 kilometres (96 miles) along most of the shores of Dorset up to the eastern tip of Devon.
The Jurassic Coast forms yet another part of the English South coast that has a lot to offer for those that are interested in geology, those who simply like to enjoy natural landscapes, or …those who like to increase their chances of sunny weather and swimmable sea water temperatures! We’ll explain below…
Call us crazy continentals (helloow! ;) ), but we actually think some parts of the English landscape are most beautiful in bad weather. Rain and mist; weather that smells like the damp wool of the grazing sheep. [Stay tuned, we’ll definitely get to those landscapes later – up next is… Dartmore(!)].
But other typical English landscapes are extraordinarily beautiful under bright blue summer skies. We think the Jurassic Coast is another such example – just like the white cliffs we showed in our previous video.
And that’s where we have good news: annually the Jurassic Coast is one of the sunniest regions in the United Kingdom (see this map, the differences are really quite big: – and also one with the mildest climate, as it’s strongly influenced by the presence of warm (Caribbean) waters of the Atlantic Gulf Stream (reason why some coastal town gardens even have palm trees growing!).
But it’s not just the climate that’s special – it’s also the geology:
Our previous video centred on the famous White Cliffs of England – or, in geological terms, England’s ‘Cretaceous coast’. Perhaps the most iconic English landscape. (You can click this link if you’ve missed it:
Today as we go further West, we slowly dive deeper into Earth’s history as the landscape around us changes – changes in shapes and texture, and also very much in colour.
This coast we think is equally beautiful, yet distinctly different – as we go from the bright whites and pastel seas of Kent and Sussex to more yellow cliffs and definitely (in summer) a more ‘Mediterranean feel’ to the sea, that is blue and clear watered, where it fills the many coves and bays.
These coves (small closed off bays) along the Jurassic Coast are really special. They result from the fact that local rock formations run parallel to the Dorset coast and are strongly tilted inland, sometimes almost standing as a vertical wall, separating the land from the waters of the English Channel. Where over thousands of years of wave action this Jurassic limestone wall was breached by the sea, less resistant rock formations in the hinterland are more easily eroded, creating oval- or circular-shaped ingressions along the coast (up until the point where the sea water is met by another more resistant rock formation, and a second line of cliffs is formed, deeper inland).
As the names suggests the dominant rock formations along the Jurassic Coast are from the Jurassic period, therefore older (145-201 million years old) than the white cliffs, that date back to the Cretaceous period (rock formations between 65-145 million years old).
Both these two geological periods (Jurassic and Cretaceous) span the ‘age of the dinosaurs’ on land, and the age of the ammonites in the oceans. Although we actually found more of their spiral-shaped fossils under the white cliffs* the Jurassic period is probably known more widely for its ammonite fossils – and a trained eye (not us, no worries) can tell the difference between Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites.
[*) Under, not ‘in’, the ammonite fossils come from the underlying ‘Gault clay’ formation, not from the actual chalk cliffs – although both are Cretaceous layers. And if you’re interested in such details, there we found both ‘Hamites’ and ‘Hoplites’, ammonite species that are very beautifully fossilised, as these still have their mother-of-pearl shiny layer preserved – very special!]
One apparent thing we did notice though – hard to miss – was the SIZE. When trying our luck along the Jurassic Coast looking for a well-preserved small ammonite (we found none) we could have broken our leg on the one we did find. Almost a metre in diameter – hidden in plain sight just lying there on the beach, among other huge boulders, that were just regular rocks. It’s in the video, so take a look!
These extremely large ammonites (of the genus Titanites) are typical of the upper Jurassic and can locally be found along Dorset’s Jurassic coast – quite unique globally (although not the world’s largest – that’s an ammonite species that can only be found in Westphalia, Germany (Parapuzosia seppenradensis) that could reach a diameter of 2.5-3.5 meters – think of it, a swimming shell, with tentacles... (Please give us feedback in the comments if you think we give too much information ;) 8-) )

Walking Through Time Episode 3 Jurassic Coast
The Jurassic Coast needs no introduction, really. But I think you’d be hard pressed to find a more stunning shot of the Lulworth Crumple. I go from Kimmeridge Bay to Budleigh Salterton, investigating anoxia from local to global scales with Paul Wignall. I get to meet palaeontologist Simon Penn, who is rapidly becoming the heir to Steve Etches, and his gorgeous fossils. I have a cuppa with Kevan Sheehan, who discovered an incredibly complete giant Pliosaur skull at Osmington Mills (and had it named in honour of all the Kev’s in the world). Hillary Ketchum is my expert guide to that pliosaur. And Eliza Howlett and I have the most trowelblazer-tastic time talking Mary Anning and Eliza Philpott in Lyme Regis. And we have a bit of a Landmark Trust love in. Oh, and underwater robot vehicle REX returns, ably assisted by Adrian Glover and Leigh Marsh.

Lulworth Cove Durdle Door Walk was about 4.5 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of coastal, hill and field paths and tracks; plus a few road sections. The terrain of this walk was mostly clear coastal and inland paths with a few road sections and navigation was easy. The walking was moderate to challenging due to some steep ascents and descents, especially if you do the optional extra by visiting the Fossil Forest. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. There was 1 stile to negotiate.
