???? ABOUT THIS VID! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
If you've ever drunk Spanish wine, I'm sure you've heard of Rioja wine. It's without a doubt Spain's most famous wine region. In this video I drink three wines (all made with tempranillo) from iconic wineries to help you understand the region a little better. I discuss the flavours and aromas of each wine (or vino, as we call it here in Spain), and also talk about the difference between modern and traditional Rioja.
And who am I? I'm James Blick, co-founder of Devour Tours and a certified sommelier, trained by WSET, one of the most famous wine training centres in the world!
Also, I also answer some really common questions about Rioja, namely:
- Are all Rioja wines Tempranillo?
- Is Rioja a red wine or a wine wine?
- What is the grape in Rioja wines? (Hint: it's tempranillo!)

How to Explore a Spanish Market Like a Local

3. EXPLORING A SPANISH MARKET LIKE A LOCAL! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
You have to visit a Spanish traditional food market next time you’re in Spain. Noisy, busy, full of wonderful smells and overflowing with people - they’re a feast for all the sense. I love my local market (the Mercado de Antón Martín - featured in this video). Ham, cheese, wine, olive oil, saffron, paprika, bread, meat, fruit and vegetables - these places are gastronomic wonderlands. But they’re also fabulous cultural places - every Spanish market has at least a few bars, and they’re always a fun place to hang out for a drink after you’ve finished your shopping.
So here is what I suggest. If you’re living or staying in Spain, give the supermarkets are miss (unless you need canned goods or cleaning products) and for all your fresh produce needs, head to the nearest local market. They’re the best place to stock up your apartment if you’re staying in an AirBnB or simply to grab some delicious stables for a picnic in the park. An important thing to remember is that if you want to try Spain’s incredible wines, hams and cheeses - they’ll be much cheaper in the market than in a tapas bar. And do make the perfect picnic hamper fillers.
In this video I explore the Antón Martín market, which is nearby my office (it’s where I shop after work). I hit the Jamón booth, a fabulous cheese stall, the fruit stand, an olive stand, an offal stand, a place for olive oil, paprika and saffron, as well as a chicken shop and an excellent bakery. Along the way you’ll get tips and tricks for tackling your local market on your own!

Mercado de San Miguel: What To EAT & DRINK!

2. MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
What do you eat and drink in the Mercado de San Miguel (aka the San Miguel Market)? It’s such a common question. And I understand the confusion! This place has so many options, and can get really busy!
In this video I take you inside the San Miguel Market for a food tour of sorts. We eat and drink at 9 different stops - including vermouth, olives, cheese, bacalao, fried fish, pintxos, paella and gelato. And I give you my honest opinion on each stop.
I also answer the following questions
- Is the Mercado de San Miguel a market?
- Is the Mercado de San Miguel a tourist trap?
- What time is the best time to visit the Mercado de San Miguel?
The places I stopped at to eat were:
1. La Hora del Vermut for vermouth and banderillas and olives
2. Mya Quesos for cheese
3. La Casa del Bacalao for bacalao and smoked sardines
4. Mr Pinkleton for wine
5. El Señor Martín for fried seafood
6. Arzábal for patatas bravas
7. Amaiketako for pintxos
8. Paella Power for paella
9. Rocambolesc for gelato
And I also give you my opinion on the market as a whole. Is it worth visiting? I think if it’s your first time then yes. But go when it’s quieter, and know that sometimes the prices are expensive. But that it’s a fun place to get your tapas sea legs. So it really should be the beginning of your tapas adventure, not the end of it.
And other traditional markets that I recommend you check out are:
1. Mercado de Antón Martín (don’t confuse this with Mercado de San Antón which is in Chueca - I don’t love it… it’s sort of a market, but not really a place where the grannies shop).
2. Mercado de la Paz
3. Mercado San Fernando
4. Mercado de las Maravillas
Enjoy!

4. EPIC MADRID FOOD TOUR! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Madrid has amazing food.. there I said it! Often when people think of Madrid they think of museums and art and maybe a trip to Toledo. But trust me, this city has an incredible food scene that is less touristy and more underground compared to some other cities in Spain. So, I wanted to make this Madrid food guide so that you can enjoy it like a true local!
Today I take you to 10 of my favourite places to eat 10 incredible bites. We start with the best chocolate in the city (melted from actual chocolate) at an over 100-year-old pastry shop. Then we head to a local and hidden family-run joint for the city’s top Spanish omelette (tortilla española) and a beer (caña).
Next up! Vermouth time. We nip across to the San Miguel market for a sweet red vermouth on tap just like the locals do (along with marcona almonds, campo real olives and a local skewer). Then we head to a SECRET STOP. Cloistered nuns who bake cookies in - the cookies are delicious and moreish and the experience is truly one-of-a-kind. As a friend used to say, like doing a drug deal!
OK… getting full. Next stop - jamón… ham! And the good stuff - acorn-fed jamón ibérico in a family-run ham shop. Around the corner we head to an over 100-year-old tapas bar for one of the most delicious tapas in the city - bull tail stew parcel, paired with a Rioja wine.
Next it’s Madrid’s most famous bite - the calamari sandwich. There are so many places that do this, but we head for the best one! And for more seafood, we swing around into the La Latina neighbourhood for the best bacalao in the city, served with a white wine in a place that is a true Madrid rough-and-tumble tapas bar.
And then - tapas. We swing into Casa Toni, a fantastic tapas bar that does brilliant sweetbreads - mollejas - a delicacy in many restaurants around the world, and here deliciously cooked with skill on the griddle.
And finally, dessert … we head to the most famous pastry shop in the city for the napolitana de crema. The perfect sweet end to a fabulous Madrid food tour. Siesta time!
Want to find those secret nun cookies? Head to Calle Codo (near Plaza de la Villa) and where you see the door with the sign Venta de Dulces, ring the top bell. Hours are Mon-Fri 0930-1300 then 16.30 - 18.30.
Here's the list of where we went:
1. El Riojano
2. Cerveriz
3. Mercado San Miguel (La Hora del Vermut was the stall)
4. Nuns
5. Mercado Jamon Iberico
6. Anciano Rey de los Vinos
7. Casa Revuelta
8. La Campana
9. Casa Toni
10. La Mallorquina

3. MADRID’S MOST HISTORIC RESTAURANTS! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
When I moved to Madrid, I fell in love with two tings - the history and the food. And over the years I’ve loved spending time in places that combine both… taverns & restaurants that are absolutely dripping with history and atmosphere. In this video, Yoly and I take you to 5 of my favourite historic restaurants and tapas bars… and not only do we eat the food, but also I tell you the stories behind these remarkable places that we’re so lucky to have on our doorstep!
▶ BOOKS I MENTION IN THE VIDEO
DON QUIXOTE:
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS:
1. First we visit Taberna Antonio Sánchez, which is actually the oldest still-running tavern in the city (not to be confused with Botin, which is the oldest still running restaurant in the world). This place has the most remarkable decor that hasn’t changed since the 1830s. And downstairs is a fascinating hidden wine cellar.
2. Then we head into Madrid’s Literary Quarter to Casa Alberto. These are the streets Miguel de Cervantes’ famous author of Don Quixote lived in. And they’re wonderful to wander. Casa Alberto is always heaving, and it’s perfect for a quick vermouth, or something a little more substantial… like the bull tail stew we order.
3. Next up it’s Taberna La Bola, where we get a special behind-the-scenes visit to the kitchen, where they make their famous cocido madrileño stew the old fashioned way - in clay pots and on a charcoal stove. It’s a huge feast, but it’s worth it!
4. Casa Ciriaco is part bar, part restaurant… and it’s always heaving. I love hanging out in the tapas bar area and sipping on wine, or heading through to the restaurant where it just screams old Madrid with its photos of famous guests.
5. The grande finale! Restaurant Botín… aka Sobrino de Botín. We see the 300-year-old oven, explore the four magical floors and then sit down in Hemingway’s table for a plate of incredible roast suckling pig. A once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Have you visited any of these places? Did you enjoy the experience? Let me know in the comments!

Madrid Wine Tours: Ribera del Duero, Segovia, Toledo, La Mancha... #wine #winelover #madrid
Our Madrid wine tours have received outstanding reviews from our customers. You will not be disappointed! We offer both private tours and very small group tours (less than 7 people to ensure the experience is simply fantastic). Other tour companies refer to small group tours for minibusses with more than 15 people on them… That is not for us! You can find a list of reasons below why we think booking with us makes sense.
Check them out here:
We are a proud partner and provider of winetourismspain.com, Spain´s leading wine and food travel website. Our tours can be booked directly from their website. They only select the very best operators in each region and aim at listing the ultimate experiences at each location.
1- Ribera del Duero tours. We offer 3 different day tours to Ribera del Duero. A small group tour (which could also be booked as a private tour) and 2 private tours. Each of them is different, all share excellent food and wine.
2- Madrid wineries. A shorter tour only offered as a small group tour
3- Toledo. Why should you only visit Toledo if instead you could visit Toledo, enjoy wine and the windmills of Don Quixote on the same tour?
4- Segovia. Much more than just Segovia on this tour. La Granja, el Escorial, and a fantastic meal and winery…
5- La Mancha. The largest extensión of vineyards in the world is also the homeland of Don Quixote. Windmills, castles,, wines…
6- 2 or 3-day tours. If one day is not enough for you we also propose you to combine Ribera del Duero and Rioja in a single tour. An Amazing experience!

3. VIDEO GUIDE ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Calle Cava Baja is a fantastic street for a tapas crawl in Madrid. It’s got about 50 tapas bars in just one street, and is in the heart of the famous La Latina neighbourhood. But with so many tapas bars, how can you pick the good from the bad? That’s where this video comes in? Yoly and I decided to hit 7 of our favourites.
Here is Calle Cava Baja on a map:
1. Taberna La Concha: I love this spot for a pre-lunch vermouth. They make their own vermouth, and serve it with a few extra ingredients to give it extra kick. They always pair it with a delicious tapa. And their cooked tapas and wine list are also excellent. A great start!
2. Diaz y Larrouy: The wine bar has been around since 1992 and so is one of the grandfather’s of this street. They have 30-40 wines per glass, and serve delicious tostas. An excellent option for cava by the glass.
3. La Posada de la Villa: There has been a posada (or inn) here since 1642, and I adore hitting the bar in this old tavern. It’s more of a restaurant, but the bar is a great place to grab a glass and even just enjoy the free tapa. It’s just full of history!
4. La Posada del Dragón: These guys do more modern tapas, and I love their tomato salad. But beyond the food, this place is extra special as beneath the glass floor you can see the remains of the medieval walls that once surrounded Madrid.
Honourable mention: La Perejila - great little tapas bar that just didn’t make the final cut.
5. Casa Lucas: Famous on Calle Cava Baja. This place is always packed, but does delicious modern tapas and tostas, and they have an excellent wine list. Don’t worry if you can’t get a table - just squeeze on up at the bar!
6. Taberna Tempranillo: Another classic wine bar that’s been around for a number of years. These guys do an eclectic selection of modern dishes, as well as tostas. And of course great wine by the glass. Also - the wine rack against the back wall is spectacular!
7. Los Huevos de Lucio: Opposite is a famous restaurant called Casa Lucio. And in that restaurant they’re famous for their huevos estrellados (aka. Huevos rotos or broken eggs). Opposite Los Huevos de Lucio is their tavern, and you can get the same dish there. It’s simple, but it’s delicious!

???? ABOUT THIS VID! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Madrid is an amazing place to eat tapas! But there are so many tapas bars that the challenge is knowing exactly where to go! I love a lot of the tapas bars in the old centre of Madrid, but I also love to escape into the local neighbours where the locals eat - because that's where you can find some truly spectacular tapas. If I were going to write a Madrid travel guide, it would definitely include a lunch or dinner of tapas in this part of town!
In this video my wife Yoly and I (follow her @flamencoguide) dive into the Ibiza neighbourhood, which is REALLY close to the old centre (quick metro or short walk) for five of my most favourite tapas bars in all of Madrid.
If you love Spanish food, this is the video for you! We eat plump prawns, slow-cooked bull tail stew, scallops, artichokes, venison, partridge, fresh fish... I could go on and one. And of course we pair it all with great Spanish wine!
I've included info below on how to get to this area. And remember - you don't need to reserve a table at any of the bars. Just turn up and hit the bar! You can reserve a table for a slightly calmer experience... but I'll leave that up to you!

HOW TO GET TO THESE BARS
The neighbourhood is called Ibiza (yes, just like the island!), and so you should head to Metro Ibiza (line 9). Alternatively, the neighbourhood is just on the other side (the east side) of the Retiro park. So one idea is to walk across the Retiro before lunch and then hit these bars. Or, take the Metro to Ibiza and then you can sleep it off (or walk it off) in the park afterwards! Or... another idea is go to the Prado Museum during the day, and then wander across the park and hit these bars for dinner.

Exploring a MASSIVE Spanish Supermarket
What's it like in a Spanish supermarket? It's time to find out! Yoly and I hit one of Madrid's largest supermarkets to explore what we buy and eat in this country. Spanish snacks, jamón, cheese, seafood, drinks, wine, beer, frozen food and even pigs brains! It's all here!

3. EXPLORING A MASSIVE SPANISH SUPERMARKET! ????
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
I always think it's really interesting visiting supermarkets in new countries. It gives you a real insight into the local diet, and the local culture. So Yoly and I decided to dive into the massive supermarket in the outskirts of Madrid to give you guys an insight into what's there. We check out Spanish potato chips, the massive selection of jamón, lots of interesting meats (blood sausage, rabbit, pigs brains and snout and more), cheeses, more cured meats and so much more.
But beyond that, we also dove into the frozen food section to see what we could find (yes, we found frozen paella in Spain!). And we also explored the enormous olive oil section, with everything from normal olive oil, right through to extra virgin olive oil (which is pretty cheap in Spain!).
