Mai Wah Chinese New Year Parade, Butte, MT, Feb. 5, 2011
Butte is famous for having the shortest, coldest and loudest Chinese New Year Parade. Here you see the dragon emerging from the Silver Bow County Courthouse in uptown Butte.
About 200 people, each making as much noise as possible, followed the dragon around our historic uptown as it performed dragon blessings on local businesses to the accompaniment of thousands of very loud firecrackers. The wind blew snow from the rooftops of surrounding historic buildings into parade-goers' faces, and we all pondered how very far from home this dragon was.
