NEW STUDENT HOUSING IN DOWNTOWN TUSCALOOSA
There's a petitioner now who's looking to develop a large scale apartment complex in the downtown area it has not yet hit the city council but the developer did reach out to me a few weeks ago, I understand it to be a development of close to 700 beds. And while District 4 Tuscaloosa City Councilman Matt Calderone says he understands that with the city's growth comes expansion, he does notice that this project will pose some concerns particularly the size of the development. The Atlanta based Peak Campus describes itself as the second largest privately-owned student housing management company in the United States. and now could present Downtown Tuscaloosa with one of the biggest developments to date. I don't believe the council has proved through rezoning or special exception of an apartment complex of more than 200 beds in about 3 years now. It's still in the early stages therefore , little is known about the project. What we do know is that it would be located in the empty space of 4th street and 22nd avenue in front of the makers market and around more student housing. Calderone says a variance from the zoning board of adjustments is still needed, possibly going before the planning commission and going before the City Council before anything concrete can be done. The Councilman says he does not know the developer's timeline at this time.

Trump targets European car makers with big plants in states he won
Trump targets European car-makers with big plants in states he won

Read Original Article Here:
President Donald Trump, expressing his ire over trade imbalances this weekend, made a peculiar choice: He focused his criticism on two European brands, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, that have significant investments in two of the nation’s most Trump-friendly states.
“Open up the barriers and get rid of your tariffs,” Trump said of the European Union’s trade policies in a wide-ranging and rollicking address in Pennsylvania Saturday. “And if you don’t do that, we’re going to tax Mercedes-Benz, we’re going to tax BMW.”
Trump made no mention of the German brands’ significance to two states that formed part of the bedrock of his support in 2016. BMW has an assembly plant employing more than 9,000 people in Spartanburg, South Carolina; about a third of the BMWs sold in the U.S. in 2017 were produced in the country, the company said. A Mercedes-Benz factory employs 3,500 people near Tuscaloosa, Alabama, according to data from the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.
The president’s plan to impose tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum imports prompted consternation from lawmakers and business leaders concerned that major employers in those states might cut back in the face of higher costs. Trump’s latest attacks, meant to stir up populist enthusiasm, could backfire politically if they instead spur fears that jobs in Trump country might be in jeopardy.
Dan Ikenson, director of the trade policy center at the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington, said Trump likely hopes tariffs on European car imports would spur the German companies to make more vehicles in the U.S. But he said the unpredictability of Trump’s trade policies would more likely have the opposite effect.
“A countervailing factor would be a reluctance of the Germans to ‘reward’ this behavior, especially if it's unclear where trade policy is going,” Ikenson told POLITICO. “His unorthodox and sometimes erratic behavior ultimately discourages investment in the United States.”
A White House spokesman did not respond to a request for comment Sunday. Trump has long said he believes it is unfair that the U.S. imposes a 2.5 percent tariff on European cars, while Europe has a 10 percent tariff for cars built in the U.S.
He warned of possible new tariffs last week on Twitter after the European Union said it might take steps in response to new steel and aluminum tariffs. They make it impossible for our cars (and more) to sell there, Trump wrote. Big trade imbalance!
Even before the president named the company Saturday, BMW was warning that targeting European cars would come back to bite the U.S.
“Should we get tariff walls, it would have an impact on jobs in the United States,” BMW CEO Harald Krueger said last week, according to Reuters.
Trump won South Carolina in 2016 with nearly 55 percent of the vote, and he racked up more than 60 percent of the vote in Alabama.
But recent events showed he might not be invincible there. The candidate Trump endorsed in the Alabama Senate primary last year, Republican Luther Strange, lost. After Trump switched his backing to Republican nominee Roy Moore, he lost too, a shocking upset that made Doug Jones Alabama’s first Democratic senator in 25 years.
Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, has a total of 23,500 employees in the U.S., according to data the company provided to POLITICO. Of 280,000 vehicles produced in Alabama last year, about 70 percent were exported, the company said. BMW also exports more than 70 percent of what it produces in South Carolina, the company told POLITICO, with China and Germany as the top two destinations.
Exports of cars made in the U.S. could be hit if America’s trading partners responded to new taxes from Trump with their own restrictions.
A Daimler spokesperson declined to comment on Trump’s Saturday remarks. BMW also did not comment Sunday.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), an on-again-off-again critic of the president’s policies, told CBS News last week — after Trump threatened to tax European car imports without naming companies — that Trump should leave BMW alone.
“China wins when we fight with Europe,” Graham said. “China wins when the American consumer has higher prices because of tariffs that don't affect Chinese behavior.” Asked about Trump’s Saturday remarks, a spokesman for Graham did not comment directly but pointed to the CBS News interview.
Trade experts said targeting imported cars with tariffs without going through a process like the White House followed with steel and aluminum would certainly cause international pushback.
“It is not clear how long such a tariff would stand unchallenged,” said Kristin Dziczek of the Center for Automotive Research.
US VS China Trade War Truce - Who Benefits?
Superpower China VS US Trade War Truce - Who Benefits?
The answer might surprise you. Two of Germany’s largest car makers stand to be immediate beneficiaries of a reduction in trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Currently, America's automakers export more of their cars to China than it imports from that market, and BMW AG and Daimler AG lead the way with their American-made cars. Over the years, both companies have invested heavily in the U.S. to build factories that supply not only American drivers but also the export markets, including China.
In 2017, U.S. manufacturers exported almost 270,000 passenger cars worth $9.5 billion to China, but only imported 58,000 vehicles worth $1.5 billion from the world’s largest car market. Of the units exported to China by U.S. car manufacturers, BMW and Daimler accounted for 67% of the total. Ford was third, exporting nearly 45,000 cars to customers in China. While the $8.0 billion trade surplus that the U.S. enjoys with China in autos is a small portion of its overall trade deficit with the country, autos are big-ticket items that create high paying jobs.
While the trade war between the U.S. and China is creating near-term uncertainty with companies and consumers alike, the long-term impact may be positive if the truce is followed by a more lasting compromise. To the extent that tariffs on autos sold to China remain at 15%, and are perhaps reduced even further, companies like BMW and Daimler with global supply chains will be major beneficiaries.

Wheel Cut Mobile Hair Salon
WHEEL CUT
Mobile Hair Salon
Here's a revolutionary way to cut your hair. Not the usual run-of-the-mill hair dressing salon, boutique or otherwise, upscale or down-to-earth mamak hole-in-the-wall. This one's a definite game-changer: it's a mobile hair salon that runs on wheels, hence 'wheel cut' - get it? And it's now finally here in Malaysia plying its trade on our roads, so to speak.
First, what's the cut on wheels like? The cut's still the same; it's cheap, fast and done the way you want it - nothing's changed - but it's the novelty of stepping into a vehicle that looks like a motorhome converted into a hair dressing salon that's such a big spin! The Wheel Cut mobile hair salon first made its appearance in Malaysia in 2008. It does its rounds every day by stationing itself at busy places in Klang - except in the evenings where you can only find it parked at various spots at the Klang pasar malam (night market).
Whether Wheel Cut has evolved from a lone wolf mobile hair salon into a full fleet making its presence felt, one thing's for certain: it offers to cut your hair in any style you fancy (just make sure you tell the hairstylist exactly how you want it), and within 10 minutes and RM15/- poorer, you get what you stepped into the mobile hair salon for. And a take-away experience of getting your hair done on wheels. And it doesn't matter whether you are male or female.

SUMMARY
=======
Birmingham ( BUR-ming-ham) is a city located in the north central region of the U.S. state of Alabama. With an estimated 2017 population of 210,710, it is the most populous city in Alabama. Birmingham is the seat of Jefferson County, Alabama's most populous and fifth largest county. As of 2017, the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 1,149,807, making it the most populous in Alabama and 49th-most populous in the United States. Birmingham serves as an important regional hub and is associated with the Deep South, Piedmont, and Appalachian regions of the nation.
Birmingham was founded in 1871, during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era, through the merger of three pre-existing farm towns, most notably Elyton. The new city was named for Birmingham, England, the UK's second largest city and, at the time, a major industrial city. The Alabama city annexed smaller neighbors and developed as an industrial center, based on mining, the new iron and steel industry, and rail transport. Most of the original settlers who founded Birmingham were of English ancestry. The city was developed as a place where cheap, non-unionized immigrant labor (primarily Irish and Italian), along with African-American labor from rural Alabama, could be employed in the city's steel mills and blast furnaces, giving it a competitive advantage over unionized industrial cities in the Midwest and Northeast.
From its founding through the end of the 1960s, Birmingham was a primary industrial center of the southern United States. Its growth from 1881 through 1920 earned it nicknames such as The Magic City and The Pittsburgh of the South. Its major industries were iron and steel production. Major components of the railroad industry, rails and railroad cars, were manufactured in Birmingham. Since the 1860s, the two primary hubs of railroading in the Deep South have been Birmingham and Atlanta. The economy diversified in the latter half of the 20th century. Banking, telecommunications, transportation, electrical power transmission, medical care, college education, and insurance have become major economic activities. Birmingham ranks as one of the largest banking centers in the U.S. Also, it is among the most important business centers in the Southeast.
In higher education, Birmingham has been the location of the University of Alabama School of Medicine (formerly the Medical College of Alabama) and the University of Alabama School of Dentistry since 1947. In 1969 it gained the University of Alabama at Birmingham, one of three main campuses of the University of Alabama System. It is home to three private institutions: Samford University, Birmingham-Southern College, and Miles College. The Birmingham area has major colleges of medicine, dentistry, optometry, physical therapy, pharmacy, law, engineering, and nursing. The city has three of the state's five law schools: Cumberland School of Law, Birmingham School of Law, and Miles Law School. Birmingham ...
