Philippine Ikat (T'nalak) by The Manila Collectible Co.
Here's a fun little T'nalak video our awesome interns created for us. T'nalak is a sacred Ikat cloth, hand-woven using a backstrap loom. The weavers utilize the Ikat technique which is a tie-dye resist method. Do you remember those tie-dye shirts from the 60's? Those are dyed after the cloth is made. For ikat, the threads are tie-dyed before it is actually woven. The cloth is from the Abaca, a plant similar to the banana. The T'boli's and a few other indigenous groups from MIndanao are the only people in the world that weave Ikat using this material. The oldest piece of Southeast Asian textile is actually an Ikat burial cloth from the Philippines. Let's help protect this beautiful ancient tradition of T'nalak weaving. Visit us, The Manila Collectible Co. in Intramuros, Manila, Philippines and facebook.com/manilacollectible. Thank you Mozart for the music=)
