Gertrude Jekyll’s 174th Birthday
Who was Gertrude Jekyll?
Gertrude Jekyll (29 November 1843 – 8 December 1932) was a British horticulturist, garden designer, artist and writer. She created over 400 gardens in the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, and wrote over 1,000 articles for magazines such as Country Life and William Robinson's The Garden. Jekyll has been described as a premier influence in garden design by English and American gardening enthusiasts.
Gertrude Jekyll Personal Life:
If not for legendary horticulturist and garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, the world might be a much drabber place. Born in London on this day in 1843, Jekyll spent most of her life in Surrey, England, on her family’s estate, Munstead House. Later, she moved into her own house, Munstead Wood, where she planted one of her most enchanting gardens.
Gertrude Jekyll Biography:
Jekyll was born at 2 Grafton Street, Mayfair, London, the fifth of the seven children of Captain Edward Joseph Hill Jekyll, an officer in the Grenadier Guards, and his wife Julia Hammersley. Her younger brother, Walter Jekyll (an Anglican priest; sometime Minor Canon of Worcester Cathedral and Chaplain of Malta), was a friend of Robert Louis Stevenson, who borrowed the family name for his famous novella Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. In 1848 her family left London and moved to Bramley House, Surrey, where she spent her formative years.
A woman of innumerable talents, Jekyll was also an accomplished musician, composer, woodworker, metalworker, and botanist. Her foundation as a budding artist greatly influenced her breathtaking creations. As a student, she took inspiration from the landscapes of English Romantic painter J.M.W. Turner, capturing the seasons, the light, the textures, and the hues of every growing thing on her canvases. Jekyll brought that painterly sensibility to her life’s work, designing about 400 gardens in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the U.S., which were documented in photographs, over a dozen books, and thousands of magazine articles.
Gertrude Jekyll Gardens:
From 1881, when she laid out the gardens for Munstead House, built for her mother by John James Stevenson, Jekyll provided designs or planned planting for some four hundred gardens. More than half were directly commissioned, but many were created in collaboration with architects such as Lutyens and Robert Lorimer. Most of her gardens are lost. A small number have been restored, including her own garden at Munstead Wood, the gardens of Hestercombe House, and the garden at the Manor House in Upton Grey that she designed for the magazine editor Charles Holme.
Gertrude Jekyll Designs and Garden Plans:
Jekyll was one half of one of the most influential and historical partnerships of the Arts and Crafts movement, thanks to her association with the English architect, Edwin Lutyens, for whose projects she created numerous landscapes, and who designed her home Munstead Wood, near Godalming in Surrey. (In 1900, Lutyens and Jekyll's brother Herbert designed the British Pavilion for the Paris Exposition.)
Jekyll is remembered for her outstanding designs and subtle, painterly approach to the arrangement of the gardens she created, particularly her hardy flower borders. Her work is known for its radiant colour and the brush-like strokes of her plantings; it is suggested by some that the Impressionistic-style schemes may have been due to Jekyll's deteriorating eyesight, which largely put an end to her career as a painter and watercolourist. In works like Colour Schemes for the Flower Garden (reprinted 1988) she put her imprint on modern uses of warm and cool flower colours in gardens.

Gertrude Jekyll Death:
Jekyll is buried in the churchyard of Busbridge Church, formerly known as St John the Baptist, Busbridge, Godalming, next to her brother and sister-in-law, Herbert Jekyll and his wife, the artist, writer and philanthropist Agnes Jekyll. The monument was designed by Edwin Lutyens.

Today’s Doodle was created by British artist Ben Giles. Giles unites the hot and cool colors the horticulturist favored to create a lush and brilliant garden collage. From the corner of the illustration, Jekyll watches her garden grow.
Happy 174th birthday, Gertrude Jekyll!

The Saltford Manor is a stone house in Saltford, Somerset, near Bath, that is thought to be the oldest continuously occupied private house in England, and has been designated as a Grade II* listed building.
The original Norman construction was by William Fitz Robert, 2nd Earl of Gloucester, and was built on an estate owned at the time of the Domesday Book by Geoffrey de Montbray the Bishop of Coutances. It is contemporary with nearby Horton Court which was a prebendary house, therefore it is likely that Saltford had an association with Keynsham Abbey, and has long been associated with St Mary's Church.
In 2003, Saltford Manor was the winner of a contest sponsored by Country Life to find the oldest continuously inhabited house in Britain. There were hundreds of entrants, many eliminated because they had been built as ecclesiastical buildings and only become available in the housing market after Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries. Other very old dwellings were eliminated because they are now used as shops or museums. After winning the contest, its resident at the time James Wynn (Grange Hill), wrote a non-fiction history book of the Manor, The House That Jack Built: The Story of the Oldest Inhabited House in Britain. It described his love for the site and how he restored it to its current state in 1997.
In 2008, the Saltford Manor was put up for sale. It sold on 27 August 2010 for £1,275,000.

A Tear For Sarah
Odiham Castle (also known locally as King John's Castle) is a ruined castle situated near Odiham in Hampshire, United Kingdom. It is one of only three fortresses built by King John during his reign.
The site was possibly chosen by King John because he had visited the area in 1204 and it lay halfway between Windsor and Winchester.
In 1215 it was from either Odiham or Windsor that King John rode out to Runnymede where he met the barons and signed the Magna Carta. A year later Odiham Castle was captured by the French after a two-week siege during the First Barons' War in 1216.
Odiham Castle might have become one of the most important strongholds in England. In 1238 Simon de Montfort married King John's daughter Eleanor just two years after she had been granted Odiham by her brother, King Henry III. However de Monfort rebelled against Henry and died at the Battle of Evesham in 1265 and Eleanor was exiled. Odiham Castle was again retained by the Crown.
The castle was also involved in the rebellion led by the powerful Despenser family against Roger Mortimer and Queen Isabella of France, the wife of Edward II.
During the fourteenth century Odiham hosted Parliament. Scottish King David II, after his capture at the Battle of Neville's Cross in 1346, was also imprisoned here for 11 years. However he was held under light guard and was allowed to keep a household.
By the 15th century Odiham was now used only as a hunting-lodge. In 1605 the former royal castle was described as a ruin.
The nearby village filmed here is Upton Grey,
The famous Elizabethan poet, George Puttenham, lived at Herriard House but also had a farm at Upton Grey. It was there that he kept his seventeen-year-old sex slave whom he had kidnapped in London. Eventually she was released when Puttenham's long suffering wife discovered her existence.

Aldon CIC* 2015 - 7th
Tommy and Sunny both went to Aldon for the last event of the season and their first 1*s. Superstar Tommy did an alright dressage (he was a bit tense in the trot) for a fair 51.3 and Sunny achieved our goal for the dressage (to do all the movements!) and got a 60.0, which I was pleased with because his work was promising and he's so big for a small arena! Then they both just had one unlucky pole in the show jumping which was causing carnage, Tommy had the first and Sunny was much better in a slightly stronger bit. On Sunday they finished the season by both pulling off two amazing clears xc in the time and only ten horses (including mine) were inside the time xc, so I'm thrilled with them. To top it off, Tommy finished 7th and Sunny finished 20th!! Thank you to everyone who has helped and supported me this year and I'll keep you up to date with what goes on over the winter.

Sunday July 31 2011 at 5.45 am. From Ham Common, past the Catholic church on the right, along a very narrow road and on to St Richard's (extremely well maintained) Church. Its built in the shape of a 6 pointed star but you need to fly over it to realize that.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Lanhydrock, Cornwall, 1640's house PART TWO
There are 500+ places of interest in the UK under the National Trust banner and I will be attempting to visit as many as I can, reporting as I do all the important stuff relative to accessibility.
Lanhydrock is unquestionably one of the most impressive (and popular) historic houses in Cornwall. Built of local grey slate and granite around an inner courtyard, the house dates to 1640, though most of the current building was the result of rebuilding after a fire in 1881.

Waltham Forest
The London Borough of Waltham Forest is a London borough in NE London, England. The south of the borough contrasts markedly with the north (split by the North Circular Road) in terms of its mixed ethnicity and socio-economic indicators. Taken as a whole, Waltham Forest comprises built-up urban districts in the south with inner-city characteristics, and more affluent residential development in the north with a variety of reservoirs, open space, small sections of Epping Forest, parks, and playing fields, which together cover a fifth of the borough. It is located between Epping Forest District Council in the north, London Borough of Redbridge in the east, London Boroughs of Newham and Hackney in the south, and London Boroughs of Haringey and Enfield in the west (where the River Lea and the surrounding parkland forms a green corridor, traditionally separating north and east London). Waltham Forest was one of the six London boroughs that hosted the 2012 Summer Olympics. The local authority is Waltham Forest London Borough Council. The borough includes one of the highest ethnic minority populations in the capital, consisting mainly of Asians, especially British Pakistanis.

The Greyfriars Chapel and Gardens:
The Friars first arrived in Canterbury in 1224 and founded the first English Franciscan Friary in 1267, Greyfriars Chapel is the only surviving building from that time.
Set in the stunning Franciscan Gardens this iconic building still hosts an Anglican Eucharist service every Wednesday at 12:30.
While entrance is free to these beautiful gardens and the historic exhibition on the lower floor, donations are encouraged for the upkeep of one of the most important and beautiful pieces of Canterburys history.
