Harriet, Lola and I are taking a walk through the historic market town of Ludlow in Shropshire.
Ludlow is a market town in Shropshire, England, 28 miles (45 km) south of Shrewsbury and 23 miles (37 km) north of Hereford via the main A49 road, which bypasses the town. With a population of approximately 11,000, Ludlow is the largest town in south Shropshire. The town is significant in the history of the Welsh Marches and neighbouring Wales.

Walks Ludlow Shropshire (Bromfield & Bringewood Chase) Heart Of England Hiking Route uk
Circular Walks In Shropshire, Ludlow Walks, Heart Of England Hikes Uk was a very pleasant hike. The landscape was fairly level and quite easy to hike over except for one hill. There was a short steep climb up the hillside to Bringewood Chase. The hiking terrain included crop fields, long tarmac driveways, farm tracks, woodland paths and a short quiet country road section. Most of the hike was on firm flat surfaces with the occasional muddy section. There were a couple of rocky sections underfoot which need to be walked with care, especially if wet.

Haunting History of Church Stretton~Shropshire~ England
Church Stretton is a small town in Shropshire, England
People have lived in the Stretton Gap (or Dale) for thousands of years; an Iron Age hillfort on Caer Caradoc overlooks the town. The name Stretton is derived from the Old English words stræt meaning Roman road and tun meaning settlement; a Roman road, Watling Street runs through the Stretton Gap, though the town (and adjacent settlements) were not historically located on this road – during the Dark Ages the settlements grew a short distance away from the old thoroughfare, for defensive purposes. Today the modern A49 road, which was constructed on its current alignment through the Stretton Gap in the late 1930s, runs along a similar course to the Roman Road. The Roman road was historically known as Botte Street.
The sounds of a man with a wooden leg has been heard walking around this public house The Bottle and Glass Inn .
Screams can be heard on Hazler Hill of a young girl who fell to her death down the open shaft of an old copper mine.. In September 1881 a man at
Church Stretton ... saw the ghost of a woman named Sarah Duckett, who
had not been seen or heard of for several years, walking near the old
Hazel Gate tollbar and disappearing close to a disused mining shaft
known as the Copper Hole ...
The large hound with eyes that glow red like hot coals is said to be a manifestation of Wild Edric, local hero and protector of Britain.
Folklore abounds on The Stiperstones and influenced the names of these tors. There is The Devil's Chair, the northernmost tor, where His Infernal Majesty is claimed to take up residence at times. A thunderstorm will immediately occur should a human seek to sit in the place.
At the midwinter solstice, all the ghosts of Shropshire are also said to assemble here.
There are The Seven Whistlers - six birds fly together searching for the lost of their number; if found, the world will end.
Wild Edric, originally an historical figure of The Welsh Marches who made peace with William the Conqueror by 1070 haunts the Stiperstones (as well as around Church Stretton hills - here as a massive hound with fiery red eyes). As punishment for betraying the nation, he (still alive) is confined with his spectral army to the mines of the area (miners have heard tapping noises), to be released at times of National threat. Claimed sightings have happened around the times of the Napoleonic Wars, Boer War, Crimean War, and the First World War.
If similarity with King Arthur springs to mind, there is supposed to a huge magical fish which guards Edric's sword at Bomere Pool, and will only give it up to his true heir.
The Burway is an ancient route which leads up from the town to the plateau on the Long Mynd. It is Shropshire's highest public road, reaching 492 metres (1,614 ft) above sea level and passing close to the highest point of the Long Mynd, called Pole Bank (516 m). Running along the plateau of the Long Mynd is another ancient route called the Portway, though not all of this is open to motor traffic. The Burway is a through route, allowing traffic (though not goods vehicles, caravans or similar) to cross over the Long Mynd westwards to Ratlinghope or Asterton (the route splits into two at Boiling Well). In winter, deep snow sometimes makes the Burway impassable. In 2015 snow gates were installed at various points of access onto the Long Mynd, to deter motorists from using the routes in wintry conditions

On the 23rd of November 2019 the Welsh Marches Line would play host to 2 steam tours hauled by LNER A1 Peppercorn no.60163 Tornado and Black 5 no.44871 standing in for A4 no. 60009 Union of South Africa.
We start at Swindon and see 67024 and 44871 arriving at the same time, 67024 then departs on her way to Gloucester to switch with 60163. Then 44871 departs heading towards Bristol Parkway.
We then see 44871 struggle through Abergavenny and Tornado fly through at nearly 70mph. Next we see 60163 at Hereford and Leominster. Unfortunately with 44871 running over an hour late I could not see her on the return.
The Hidden Highway: Shrewsbury to Ludlow
The Hidden Highway lies along the unmarked border between Wales and England. We join it the medieval town of Shrewsbury, the most important market town in Shropshire. After exploring the Benedictine monastery and meeting up with local gardeners we travel on to Powys Castle, built in the 14th century as a fortress for Welsh Princes, stop at the tiny village of Clun on the site of an Iron Age Fort, and then to Ludlow, a castle town which eventually became the seat of government for the Council of Marches. Visit &
Welcome to Ludlow Castle, one of the finest medieval ruins in England. Set in the glorious Shropshire countryside at the heart of the superb, bustling black & white market town of Ludlow. Walk through the Castle grounds and see the ancient houses of kings, queens, princes, judges and the nobility – a glimpse into the lifestyle of medieval society.
The Castle, firstly a Norman Fortress and extended over the centuries to become a fortified Royal Palace, has ensured Ludlow’s place in English history – originally built to hold back unconquered Welsh, passing through generations of the de Lacy and Mortimer families to Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York. It became Crown property in 1461 and remained a royal castle for the next 350 years, during which time the Council of the Marches was formed with responsibility for the Government of Wales and the border counties. Abandoned in 1689 the castle quickly fell into ruin, described as ‘the very perfection of decay’ by Daniel Defoe.
Since 1811 the castle has been owned by the Earls of Powis, who have arrested further decline, and allowed this magnificent historical monument to be open to the public. Today the Castle is the home to Ludlow’s major festivals throughout the year and open for all to enjoy.
The video showcases a new roof on the Round Chapel.
Triple Mainline Steam Treat. 44871, 60163, 45305
Three mainline steam specials were scheduled today in the West Midlands.
The first being Ian Riley’s Stanier Black 5 44871 stepping in as a replacement for 60009 Union of South Africa, working The Ludlow Medieval Christmas Fair from Slough to Shrewsbury and return. Filmed at Shrewsbury station.
60163 Tornado followed working the Marches and Severn Express from Eastleigh to Shrewsbury and return. Also filmed at Shrewsbury.
A final visit to Birmingham Moore Street saw the second Stanier Black 5 45305 arriving with the Polar Express.
Met a few new faces and saw some familiar ones at Shrewsbury. A great day out. If you enjoy the content feel free to like and subscribe.
If you do go out to see steam on the mainline or at a local preserved railway then please do not trespass on the railway and view from a safe position.
As nice as it is to video steam on the mainline, please try and contribute to the future of mainline steam by booking a place on an excursion and support the future of mainline steam. Being on a tour is as memorable as seeing one pass your local station.
Filmed on 23/11/19 at Shrewsbury and Birmingham Moore Street

British Street Food In Ludlow
Ludlow is my favourite place in the world. My wife is from here, I got married here, and I want to settle down here. It's home to the first -- and best -- food festival in Great Britain. So what better setting could there be for the first British Street Food Awards? In 2010? The council have put us in a car park (it is a street food festival, after all) but it's the most beautiful car park in the world, overlooked by a magnificent medieval castle and the Welsh Marches. Roll on September.......
