Another Wicked Act Hidden In American History.... #GROVELANDFOUR

A special thanks to Aaron Hose!
This was one of his very first documentaries in 2003, The Groveland Four taught me about the great educational and storytelling values of documentary film. This is the harrowing story of four African-American males wrongly accused and convicted of raping a young, white female in Groveland, Florida, in 1949. My eyes were truly opened to a largely unknown--but very important--chapter of the African-American struggle in this country right before the rise of the Civil Rights Movement. Talk about a golden opportunity for me to share some history with the rest of the world.
The film was produced with the generous support of The Groveland Four: The Sad Saga of a Legal Lynching, a book by Gary Corsair.
***UPDATE***
Florida says sorry to 'Groveland Four,' wrongly convicted of rape in 1949.

US Congresswoman Proposes To Restore Medicaid To FAS Citizens
By Rolynda Jonathan
A US Congresswoman has introduced a proposal to restore Medicaid coverage and services to the citizens of the freely associate states residing in the U.S.
On February 28, 2013, Hawaii representative Colleen Hanabusa introduced the Restoring Medicaid for Compact of Free Association Migrants Act of 2013 amending the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996.
The proposal, which was introduced during the U.S. House of Representatives' first session, would allow citizens of Palau, the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia access to the U.S. federal program.
Freely associated states citizens were allowed access to Medicaid as part of the Compact of Free Association Agreement until the 1996 Act cut them off and forced states such as Hawaii to cover cost of healthcare benefits.

Goochland County Founded 1727
Dunleith Built 1737
When Dunleith was established, Cumberland County didn't exist yet. It was part of Goochland. Dunleith main house precedes Cumberland County by 12 years
Cumberland County Founded 1749
At Effingham Tavern in Cumberland Courthouse Carter Henry Harrison read one of the first calls for the independence in the colonies on April 22, 1776. John Mayo and William Fleming subsequently presented this statement to the Virginia Convention. This initial call for independence, soon joined by other voices, led to the Declaration of Independence. George Walton, born in Cumberland County, signed this seminal document in the history of the United States.
A little fun:
You can't have a place as old as Dunleith and not have a story or legend passed down through the years. Here are a few told to us:
Jefferson Family
Before it was called Dunleith, the Jefferson family (including Thomas Jefferson) along with Thomas Randolph owned several land parcels in the area through grants and patents, one in particular, a large parcel that included several out buildings, a log cabin, & main 3-story house known today as Dunleith Estates.
The Estate took its official name Dunleith in 1803 (hence the 1803 date on all property signs)
In honor of the Jefferson story, the main dining room in Dunleith is known as The Thomas Jefferson Room
The Residing Dr. H.S. Goodman
During the Civil War (1861-1865) property owner Spencer B. Powers asked Dr. H.S. Goodman to setup a makeshift emergency office in one of the rooms of Dunleith. Union soldiers knew of the Dr. and would make trips by Dunleith to get medical services. To keep the soldiers from foraging the property, Mr. Powers would keep vats of brandy in an out building to give soldiers to drink and allow them to fill flasks with brandy before heading back to the troops.
Mill Stones
Three Mill Stones, used on the property in 1892. Two of the three are used for the sidewalk entrances to the main house, and the entrance to the guest cottage. The third mill stone is said to be buried somewhere in the property yard.
English Basement
The English Basement at one time was used as a one room library and school room. Today the original hand hewn beams still adorn the room.
1930-1931 Drought
In 1930-1931 the region experienced a major drought where many wells, springs, etc. went dry. Dunleith spring fed well stood strong and is still flowing strong today. The story goes that the owners allowed anyone in need of water to fill up barrels, buckets, and wagons, to keep the area farm land animals and families from total destruction.
Pamplin Clay Pipes
Several clay pipe heads, known as Pamplin Clay Pipes, have been found on the property of Dunleith during different property projects. The found pipes are shown as a collection in the formal parlor of Dunleith where the current owners, Ralph & Karen Mulleins, have created a museum to house the antiquities found on the property.
Imported Ornate English Bricks
During outdoor projects, several very ornate English bricks have been discovered.
Dunleith Silver in a locked box Legend
Information began to spread quickly about troops of the Civil War heading towards Amelia, Sailors Creek, High Bridge, Farmville, Cumberland Church, etc. Talk of farms possibly being destroyed and foraged by soldiers brought fear to the area. During this time, it was said the wealthy placed Silver and valuables in a special locked box and hid it at the base of an old oak tree with special shaped branches that forked North and South to keep the valuables away from soldiers.
To the knowledge of many local families, the locked box has never been discovered. Even though the story could be a rumor or legend, we do know when excavation began for the pond that resides on Dunleith to this day, several locals brought chairs and watched patiently to see if the legendary box was revealed.

AstroTurf is an American subsidiary that produces artificial turf for playing surfaces. The original AstroTurf product was a short-pile synthetic turf. Since the early 2000s, AstroTurf has marketed taller pile systems that use infill materials to better replicate natural turf. The prime reason to incorporate AstroTurf on game fields is to avoid the cost of laying and maintaining natural turf and to maximize hours of usage. In 2016, AstroTurf became a subsidiary of German-based SportGroup, a family of sports surfacing companies, which itself is owned by the investment firm Equistone Partners Europe.

'Devil in the Grove' author talks about Groveland 4 pardon on 'The Weekly'
After nearly 70 years, all four members of the Groveland Four -- four black men who were falsely accused of raping a 17-year-old white woman in Lake County -- were pardoned by the Florida Clemency Board last week.
The case inspired the 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning book Devil in the Grove: Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys, and the Dawn of a New America, which offered eye-opening details about the racial injustice that ensued in the days following the accusation.
The book's author, Gilbert King, joined anchor Justin Warmoth on The Weekly on ClickOrlando.com to talk about the pardoning.

SUMMARY
=======
James Ewell Brown Jeb Stuart (February 6, 1833 – May 12, 1864) was a United States Army officer from the U.S. state of Virginia, who later became a Confederate States Army general during the American Civil War. He was known to his friends as Jeb, from the initials of his given names. Stuart was a cavalry commander known for his mastery of reconnaissance and the use of cavalry in support of offensive operations. While he cultivated a cavalier image (red-lined gray cape, yellow sash, hat cocked to the side with an ostrich plume, red flower in his lapel, often sporting cologne), his serious work made him the trusted eyes and ears of Robert E. Lee's army and inspired Southern morale.Stuart graduated from West Point in 1854, and served in Texas and Kansas with the U.S. Army. He was a veteran of the frontier conflicts with Native Americans and the violence of Bleeding Kansas, and he participated in the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry.
He resigned, when his home state of Virginia seceded, to serve in the Confederate Army, first under Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley, but then in increasingly important cavalry commands of the Army of Northern Virginia, playing a role in all of that army's campaigns until his death. He established a reputation as an audacious cavalry commander and on two occasions (during the Peninsula Campaign and the Maryland Campaign) circumnavigated the Union Army of the Potomac, bringing fame to himself and embarrassment to the North. At the Battle of Chancellorsville, he distinguished himself as a temporary commander of the wounded Stonewall Jackson's infantry corps.
Arguably Stuart's most famous campaign, Gettysburg, was marred when he was surprised by a Union cavalry attack at the Battle of Brandy Station and by his separation from Lee's army for an extended period, leaving Lee unaware of Union troop movements and contributing to the Confederate defeat at the Battle of Gettysburg. Stuart received significant criticism from the Southern press as well as the postbellum proponents of the Lost Cause movement, but historians have failed to agree on whether Stuart's exploit was entirely the fault of his judgment or simply a result of bad luck and Lee's less-than-explicit orders.
During the 1864 Overland Campaign, Union Maj. Gen. Philip Sheridan's cavalry launched an offensive to defeat Stuart, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern. Stuart's widow wore black for the rest of her life in remembrance of her deceased husband.

Atlanta Personal Injury Lawyer
Welcome to Greathouse Trial Law and thanks for stopping by. There could be any number of reasons you are searching for a personal injury attorney and any number of attorneys in Atlanta to choose, so I appreciate your time spent researching me.
Maybe this is the first time you've considered calling an injury attorney. You could be experiencing pain, suffering, discomfort, are dealing with piles of unexpected medical bills, time off of work and are confused about how to move forward.
Contact an Experienced Atlanta Personal Injury Law Firm
Before you do anything else, contact a personal injury lawyer right away. The first thing you should do after an accident is to contact an attorney, not an insurance company. This may sound cliche but it is true, and here's why. Insurance companies are large corporations in the business of making money. They can't pay what each accident victim deserves because they would then be out of business.
I understand how to deal with insurance companies. I know you are confused, injured and angry. The money insurance companies will attempt to settle on is not nearly the amount to cover your medical bills, vehicle damage, doctor visits and living expenses. Insurance companies, even your own, are looking out for themselves first. Let me assist you in getting the fair compensation you deserve.

About Riah Greathouse

Riah earned his law degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in Houston, Texas, where he graduated in the Top 10% of his law school class. During Riah’s law school tenure, he gained invaluable experience with internships with Judge Clarence Cooper of the United States District Court in the Northern District of Georgia, as well as Chief Judge Myra H. Dixon of the State Court of Fulton County, Georgia. The respective judicial internships allowed Riah to gain a keen insight on the method in which judges operate, and how many of them expect attorneys to be prepared when appearing on clients’ behalf.
Following law school, Riah joined a premier DUI defense firm, where he zealously represented numerous individuals charged with DUI. While representing DUI clients, Riah earned his certification in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration DUI Detection & Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, and attended the National College for DUI Defense at Harvard. After leaving the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, Riah joined a nationally recognized plaintiff’s firm, where he represented injured victims as well as estates on behalf of decedents in wrongful death actions, where he has recovered millions for his clients.
