MASH Site in Malibu Creek State Park in Late March 2018
The best time of year for hiking to the MASH site in Malibu Creek State Park is springtime, when the surrounding hills are green and the temperatures are moderate. The MASH set is easily accessible from the main parking lot, mostly on wide fire roads, with one significant hill, a bridge crossing and one somewhat rocky trail section. The path is about 2 1/2 miles each way, Best of walkers/hikers/runners. Cyclists are ok but a bit technical over the last half mile or so. More info at

M*A*S*H Set Scenes Before and After Woolsey Fire of 2018
Decided to re-post this video showing scenes of the MASH set at Malibu Creek State Park both before and after the Woolsey Fire showing that the entire set survived the fire. This version is set to the MASH Theme song on acoustic guitar, with permission from It includes some additional before and after video footage March 2018 vs December 2018.
Formerly called Century Ranch, this area was used for most exterior and tent scenes for the series' 11 seasons and 256 episodes that originally aired 1972 to 1983. The show revolves around as cast of characters at the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in Uijeongbu, South Korea during the Korean War.
The M*A*S*H them song is actually called Suicide is Painless, a song written for a faux suicide by Walter Painless Pole Waldowski in the 1970 film M*A*S*H. Director Robert Altman's 14 year old son Mike wrote the lyrics, given the directive from his dad to make it the stupidist song ever written. Music was written by Johnny Mandel. In this The Last Supper scene, actor Ken Prymus sings the song while Waldowski unknowingly takes a sleeping pill.
Paramont Ranch
THE PARAMOUNT RANCH
A visit to the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills is to slip into the past and find yourself on the dusty main street of the old west. Truly an exercise for your imagination and your body, walking along the street of movie facades or on the trails through picturesque hills, you will suddenly be transported right into the middle of countless movies and television shows. Careful where you step – you could be walking in the footsteps of Alan Ladd, Bob Hope, Gary Cooper, Randolph Scott or Glen Ford, (among countless other stars) all of whom have worked on the Paramount Ranch. Not only movies but television shows such as “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” also brought the Paramount Ranch right into our living rooms. Through the 30s to the 70s the western town was built and rebuilt to resemble whatever western or other exotic locale was needed for the current movie being filmed by Paramount Studios. In 1980 the Ranch became part of the National Park Service and even though it is still used for filming, the 436 acres (including the western town which was rebuilt in 1984) of the original 2,000+ acres, is now open to the public. So, hop on your horse (o.k. so your horse eats gas instead of oats) and get yourself out to Paramount Ranch Road (off Cornell Road) in Agoura Hills, CA, and have a day of fun, imagination and nostalgia.

As the Alta California (Upper California) coast was settled by Spanish Franciscan missionaries in the late 18th century, the El Camino Real (the Royal Road or King's Highway), a road from Loreto, Baja California, Mexico to Sonoma, California, and connecting the Spanish missions in California, was established through the heart of what would later be known as Agoura Hills. In about 1800, Miguel Ortega was granted a Spanish grazing concession called Rancho Las Virgenes or El Rancho de Nuestra Señora La Reina de Las Virgenes. The grant was abandoned after Ortega's death in 1810, and José Maria Dominguez was given Rancho Las Virgenes as a Mexican land grant in 1834. Maria Antonia Machado de Reyes purchased the rancho from Dominguez in 1845.

Exploring the M*A*S*H Set Site at Malibu Creek State Park on 12/22/18
After news reports in social media last month reported that the M*A*S*H set site in Malibu Creek State Park was destroyed in the Woolsey Fire, I set forth to observe the remains on Saturday after the park was reopened earlier in the week.
To my pleasant surprise, pretty much the entire set was still there, including the iconic signpost and even the information sheet with a map of what the set looked like during the show's taping. The signpost can use some refurbishment as you can see - it's a bit hard to read - but you can still make out most of the destinations - Boston, Seoul, Coney Island, San Francisco, Tokyo, Burbank, Death Valley, Toledo and Decatur.
The trail from the main Malibu Creek State Park parking lot gets a bit dicey after crossing the bridge, with fallen trees/shrubs on the path and some rocky areas, so if you do make this trek - about 2 1/2 miles each way - wear good hiking shoes, be careful and stay on the trail as best you can.
More details on the MASH site at
In the latter part of this video, there some bonus scenes of MCSP near the Visitor Center, which also survived the Woolsey Fire, where the Nanday Conure (black-hooded parakeets) chatter away as they always do.
