Riverside House Project, Woolston, Southampton
Facebook:
The objective is to design a two storey house for a professional couple with three kids aged 6,10 and 14 years old. The house is going to be built in Woolston, Southampton UK on the site located on Wharf Road. It has access to the road on the East side and access to the waterfront physically and visually on the West side. On the North is an apartment block and on the South, the former Vosper Thornycroft site (which is currently part of a major redevelopment project by Southampton City Council). The area is surrounded by traditional English buildings and the client demands to be used traditional building construction technology such as cavity walls, timber floors and roof and in the same time, to satisfy the modern functionality, standards, needs and comfort of a contemporary English family.
The region has already it's own identity in terms of building style. In respect to the existing rhythm, my proposal has a traditional house shape on the street side to blend with the surroundings. Build also from brick and block and having on the shown part (street) a timber roof with traditional tiles the house doesn’t visually disturb the eye when looked in the ensemble, at the street as a whole. This unity creates monotony. The house does fall apart from the monotony by it's big, East placed passive design windows but the most important element, is the glassed staircase with the vertical timber battens on the East side. It is towards the road and it creates the 5% red element. The surrounding buildings are two or three stories high. The vertical battens transmits monumentality and gives the feeling to the street viewer that the building is actually more taller than it actually is. In this way, the house is not psychologically eclipsed. All other elements are horizontally orientated, in antithesis with it. The staircase also transmits dynamicity.
In terms of functionality, it is an open plan. The entrance is located on the North - East and it has incorporated a cloth hanging and storage place. To make the access easier, it is fallowed by the staircase, the ground floor bathroom and the playroom. To allocate even more playing space, the room has it's own connection with the garden. The kitchen is connected to the dining room in an open plan and together with the living room are array around the central interior garden. On the day zones like the kitchen, dining room and living room glazed walls are in place on the South side to gain natural heat from the sun and to communicate with the garden. Bringing the garden intro the house creates psychologically bigger spaces and in a big, crowded cities like Southampton it delivers a boost of well being and rises morale. The living room is placed to the West, aside the rest of the rooms to have more privacy. Besides South sun, it has large glazed walls to the West. The unusual position of it has two reasons: the first one is that the users spend the most of their time in the living room in the afternoon so the West point is the only one that can deliver the warm light at that time of the day. The second reason is that the client has required to have access to the waterfront both visually and physically and that has made the glazed walls to have double functionality. The living room also has a private reading space in the North-West. Due to orientation, it has light until very late in the day. Perfect for reading at all times. It also has a glass sound insulation barrier and a straight view to the green central garden. The green colour transmits calm and it helps concentration. All elements makes the place the perfect spot for reading. The garden has two sheltered parking spaces, easy accessed from the road, trees to increase privacy on the South and large spherical neon lights placed dynamically around the property. While the ground floor is very open, communicative with large windows, the first floor is the exact opposite. It transmits privacy, the full element is predominantly. The functionality is simple, from the staircase is entered into a small hall delivering access to the children bedrooms and the family bathroom. Above the living room is the study room, with West faced window to have light until late in the day, and the master bedroom.
This concludes a short description of the brief and the objectives. The site had it's own level of design difficulty because it is flat, with no tree or a rock or something to link to your design. Besides that, there are privacy issues that are needed to resolve from all directions, apartments from the North, former industrial spaces from the South, the road from the East and passing boats and even the whole city from the West. The proposal has an excellent response to brief, meeting good all the requests from the client.

Buckler's Hard on the River Beaulieu, Hampshire
Buckler's Hard is a hamlet situated on the banks of the Beaulieu River in the English county of Hampshire. With its Georgian cottages running down to the river, Buckler's Hard is part of the 9,000 acres (36 km2) Beaulieu Estate. The hamlet is located some 2 1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) south of the village of Beaulieu. The hamlet, originally called Montagu Town, was built by the second Duke of Montagu, and was intended to be a free port for trade with the West Indies. Its geography also favoured the development of shipbuilding, as the hamlet possessed access to a sheltered but navigable waterway with gravel banks capable of supporting slipways for vessel construction and launch. Timber for hulls was also readily available from the New Forest adjacent to the hamlet. Shipbuilding at Buckler's Hard commenced in the early eighteenth century, and grew to national prominence with the arrival of Henry Adams, the former Master Shipwright from Deptford Dockyard, in 1744. Adams set up a private shipyard adjoining the hamlet, and promptly won a series of Royal Navy contracts for vessel construction. Over the following sixty years he would supervise the building of 43 Royal Navy ships at Buckler's Hard, including HMS Euryalus, HMS Swiftsure and HMS Agamemnon, all of which fought at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The shipbuilding industry declined in the nineteenth century. During World War II, the village was used to build motor torpedo boats and the river was a base for hundreds of landing craft for the Normandy invasion, Operation Overlord. Today the hamlet is given over to tourism, with a small maritime museum, and a modern yachting marina. Buckler's Hard was where Sir Francis Chichester began and finished his single-handed voyage around the world in Gipsy Moth IV. SOURCE;Wikipedia
