Gawthorpe Maypole Plaiting 2014
As well as hosting the World Coal Carrying Championships, the village of Gawthorpe in Yorkshire is famed for its annual Maypole Celebrations, held on the first Saturday in May. A procession of floats, dignitaries, fancy-dress clad revellers and musicians accompanies the May Queen and her attendants; it winds its way around a four-and-a-half mile route starting from the local school and finishing at the Maypole Green. There the schoolchildren perform a series of intricate ribbon-plaiting dances around the maypole; there is also funfair and a host of other entertainments. A real family day out!

The English tradition of the Coal Carrying Championship began back in 1963 as a bet between a farmer, a coal miner and a coal merchant - and it’s still going today.
For the DW series Quirky Customs, Euromaxx reporter Max Merrill took part in the 2019 Coal Carrying Championships. How will he place in the traditional race?

The organ of St Mary the Virgin, Long Preston, North Yorkshire
This has to be one of the most beautiful organ's I've played, especially with it's beautiful case. The 3 manual organ of the church of St Mary the Virgin, Long Preston, North Yorkshire, it's reputedly originally from St Alban's Abbey, built in the 18th century, built here in 1868/75, and rebuilt by W Denman and Son of York in 1891, and restored in 1981 again. There is some very good reeds on this organ, and since this was after a short communion service, held here at 11am on a Wednesday, I did a a post-communion voluntary improvisation....and I enjoyed playing this organ, although some pipes were out of tune!! The pictures of the church in the snow were taken in February!! The last two pictures are not mine...as I got them off Google.
