Sibebe Rock in Mbabane, Swaziland
Sibebe Rock in Mbabane, Swaziland
Sibebe is a granite mountain in Eswatini, located 10 km from the capital city Mbabane. It is the second-largest monolith in the world and the largest exposed granite pluton, rising 350m above the valley of the Mbuluzi River. It is also known as 'Bald Rock'.
Sibebe Rock, just north of Mbabane, is one of southern Africa’s most impressive geological features. This immense three-billion-year-old volcanic slab, which rises to a height of 1,488m and covers some 16,500ha, is the world’s largest granite dome. Only Australia’s Uluru pips it to the title of ‘world’s largest rock’. Uluru is actually an eroded sandstone inselberg – in other words, formed of layers of sediment. Sibebe, by contrast, is a batholith: it welled up through the earth’s crust in one great molten bubble before cooling to form a massif of sheer granite.
It is hard to appreciate the scale of Sibebe from below. That’s partly because there is no single spot from which the whole rock is visible. The best way to see it is, of course, to climb it.
On top, you will find a wonderland of huge sculpted boulders and gleaming slopes of exfoliating granite. Trails radiate in all directions, leading to caves, waterfalls and hidden pockets of indigenous forest. There is even a large meadow where – amazingly – a small population of wild horses roams the lush grazing. The flora is impressive, with orchids and other wild flowers carpeting the grasslands from October to December, and wild bananas (Strelitzia nicolai) fluttering their tattered, flag-like leaves in the forested clefts. You might also spot highveld birds, such as jackal buzzard, buff-streaked chat, ground woodpecker and – if you’re lucky – even a Verreaux’s eagle or blue swallow. But remember that this is Swazi Nation Land, not a nature reserve. You will also meet wandering cattle and their herdboys, and on the eastern slopes you’ll spy the small homesteads of those who live up here.

Establishing a mosaic of protected areas in the Swaziland Lubombo
The Lubombo Mountains stretch across Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa in the Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany biodiversity hotspot, where CEPF is supporting the Lubombo Conservancy to establish ecosystem management of Swaziland's Lubombo Plateau and Escarpment. This region is home to numerous nature reserves and the Lubombo Conservancy is working to establish one reserve where animals can roam freely without any hindrances from the fences that currently separate the different conservation areas.
The Lubombo Conservancy is also developing ecotourism and other sustainable development opportunities for local communities in the conservancy area, such as the Lubombo Eco Trails. In this video, Nomsa Mabila from the Lubombo Conservancy discusses how they work with local communities to make decisions about mapping, determining what areas to protect as high biodiversity areas and where there is high ecotourism potential.

WIKI :
Ezulwini Valley is a valley of northwest Swaziland. Also known as The Valley of Heaven, the valley lasts for about 30 kilometres, and is bounded to the east by the Mdzimba hills.
The historical capital of Swaziland Lobamba is located in the valley, also known as the Royal Valley, a place of many legends of Swazi history. The main highway is the MR3 road; some parts have four lanes.
The valley extends as far down as Kwaluseni. The valley contains a number of notable wildlife sanctuaries and features including the 4,500 hectare Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary (established in 1964 and the Royal Swazi Sun Hotel. The valley is undergoing significant development with the growth of Tourism in Swaziland, with the building of tacky casinos, bars, hotels, shops such as the Gables Shopping Centre and urbanization. Also of note is the Ezulwini Handicrafts Centre and Swazi National Museum in Lobamba. Despite the urban developments in the valley the landscape still has some soft green hills and plains-game grazing in the lush lands below. ...
Getting a bit TOO close to nature?! | eSwatini/Swaziland Safari + Canopy Tour
As I mention at the end of this Swaziland video, our week in Swaziland (now eSwatini!) was probably the biggest highlight of my travels and digital nomad life so far. And in this final Swaziland vlog, I'm going to show you why!

Swaziland has so much to offer visitors and if you love adventure, you'll love this side of Swaziland. In this video, we start with a tree top canopy tour . The Malolotja canopy tour was a little scary at first, but SO much fun. There's nothing like seeing the world from above and swinging through the Swaziland treetops probably takes the number one spot for things to do in Swaziland - even if I did scream!
After seeing Swaziland from above at Malolotja, we head to Mkhaya Nature Reserve for the night. Mkhaya is one of Swaziland's Big Game Parks and we spotted giraffes, zebras, rhinos and even a hippo on my first ever safari. After our safari at Mkhaya, we stayed in one of the open-air huts, completely surrounded by nature. It was another scary experience but also a highlight from this trip to Swaziland!
I really hope you've enjoyed the Swaziland videos (or should I say eSwatini videos!). It was such a magical week and I can't recommend visiting enough. If you do plan a trip, please let me know!
Thanks again to South African Airways and the Swaziland Tourism Authority for inviting me on this truly amazing trip.
