Houston - City Video Guide
Houston is the most populous city in Texas and one of the largest cities in the USA, situated near the Gulf of Mexico.
Built on the businesses of energy, shipping and aerospace, Houston is also a very cultural city. Beneath the downtown skyline, the parklands of Discovery Green are filled with striking public art. Some of the most popular institutions in the nearby Museum District are the Menil Collection, Rothko Chapel and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Hermann Park, also within the district, is home to the soaring Pioneer Memorial and the Reflecting Pool. Set within the park is the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center.
Kids will love the rides at Galveston Historic Pleasure Pier. The city's biggest attraction, of course, is Space Center Houston, where you'll experience mankind's greatest adventure.
When the sun starts to set, refuel on some fiery Tex Mex cuisine and get ready for another day in Houston, the brightest star in Texas.

Artist Talk with Suzan Frecon
As part of the Menil’s ongoing lecture series with contemporary artists, abstract painter Suzan Frecon will present a talk on November 7 in the main museum building. Frecon will discuss elements that go into making her work, such as the variability and transformative qualities of natural light and oil paint, color, composition, and scale. “I have spent my life trying to make art/painting that has the singular purpose of speaking for itself,” says Frecon.
Suzan Frecon’s painting version 13 (2010) is currently on view at the Menil Collection. This program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited.
Born in 1941, Suzan Frecon has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. In 2008, her work was the subject of a major solo exhibition, form, color, illumination: Suzan Frecon painting, at the Menil Collection. Since 2008 her work has been represented by David Zwirner NYC, London and Hong Kong; previous solo shows there include recent oil paintings (New York, 2017); watercolor and small oil paintings (London, 2017); oil paintings and sun (New York, 2015); paper (New York, 2013) recent painting (New York 2010) and recent painting (Hong Kong, 2018). Her work is also represented by Lawrence Markey San Antonio. In 2016, Frecon received the Artist Award from the Artists’ Legacy Foundation in Oakland, California.

Fred Baldwin Talk and Book Signing: Dear Mr. Picasso: An Illustrated Love Affair with Freedom
Noted photographer and co-founder of FotoFest, Fred Baldwin has recently published his memoir, Dear Mr. Picasso: An Illustrated Love Affair with Freedom. The book begins with Baldwin’s encounter with Pablo Picasso in 1955, a life-changing event that emboldened Baldwin to embrace a peripatetic life as a photojournalist. He spent the next few decades making remarkable “picture stories,” at times at great personal risk. His adventures led him to locations where few or no photographers had gone before.
Baldwin’s book is generously illustrated with hundreds of black-and-white and color photographs from his vast archive. A highly engaging speaker, Baldwin will share images and recount some of the extraordinary experiences of his illustrious career. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and a book signing will immediately follow the lecture.
Read The New York Times review of Dear Mr. Picasso.
About the Photographer/Author:
Fred Baldwin was born in 1929 in Switzerland where his father served as a United States diplomat. A Marine rifleman, Baldwin was wounded and decorated twice during the Korean War. After earning his BA from Columbia College, New York in 1956, he began a freelance photography career that continued until 1987. Baldwin worked for LIFE, National Geographic, GEO, STERN, Esquire, and Sports Illustrated, among others. He and his wife and long-time collaborator, Wendy Watriss, have lived in a bungalow owned by the Menil Foundation since 1980. Together they co-founded FotoFest in 1983 with Petra Benteler, and Baldwin continues to serve as its Chairman.
Public Program of The Menil Collection, Houston, TX. August 28, 2019.
