The mulesing debate: Is cutting skin off sheep bottoms to protect against larvae ethical? | ABC News
A growing push to stop Australian sheep producers cutting skin off their animals' bottoms, a practice known as mulesing, is exposing the tension between the farm and the fashion industry.
NSW wool producer David Young does not do it to be cruel, but to protect them against flystrike, a lethal condition that is prevalent among Merino sheep grown in hotter Australian climates.
The procedure has become increasingly targeted by animal activists in Australia who are spreading photos of bloody sheep widely. Now, consumer awareness about mulesing has become so common that major brands have started to tell the Australian wool industry that they will no longer use wool that comes from mulesed sheep.

Eugowra - Discover the Riches
Eugowra
Discover the vibrant energy of Eugowra’s dramatic natural landscape, rich resources, bushranger history and eclectic events.
Located in the Lachlan River Basin, Eugowra is a picturesque town nestled along the Mandagery Creek.
Eugowra is located in the heart of bushranger country and is most famous for Australia’s biggest gold robbery. Frank Gardiner’s gang held up the Ford & Co coach from Forbes to Orange at Escort Rock (approximately 4.5kms north of the township).
The bushrangers stole 14,000 pounds Sterling worth of gold and cash. Only a portion was ever recovered which resulted in the development of a strong folk law surrounding the missing loot.
The unique history and flavour of the town have been immortalised in murals throughout the town and the Historical Museum and Bushranger Centre.
The town is rich in community involvement and energy. Eugowra boasts a number of highly successful events including the Spring Racing Carnival and Canola Cup.
Eugowra is a great base for exploring the natural wonders of the area including Nangar National Park, Back Yamma State Forest, the Mandagery Creek and the Lachlan River.
The town’s uniquely imposing large granite boulders were used for the construction of the new Parliament House and were supplied by the local Granite Mill. The town is well known for cattle, timber, feed and hay production.
The town is home to a number of talented professionals. It is serviced by a new well-appointed hospital with aged care accommodation, town pool run by the community, Primary and Catholic schools, day-care/preschool, function venue, traditional country style pub, bowling club, café, supermarket, highly popular butcher, hairdressers and a few well regarded specialty stores. People travel from around the region to access the talents of a number of Eugowra’s retailers.

Not much video this time - was having too much fun flying to hold the video camera for long. This is Phil Poole, flying his very well behaved Tomboy free flight plane. Many competitors woke early to take advantage of the calm conditions. The engine is a Mills 0.75cc.

This is a short clip for the Imperial Guesthouse in Manildra. We stayed there for a few days during The Amped Tour and absolutely loved it!
Apologies to the owners - we had been there for a while when we made this clip - so it's not exactly spotless, but you still get an idea how rad the place is!
Anyone heading for a trip to the Central West needs to spend a night or two here! Contact David and Therese on 0408 679 250.
Manildra Flour Mill Explosion
Manildra - Discover the Riches
Manildra
Feel the pulse of Manildra where productivity meets rich country atmosphere - a thriving heart of industry for the region.
Situated on the banks of the Mandagery Creek, Manildra is a grain processing centre with the biggest Flour Mill in the southern hemisphere, the Manildra Flour Mill.
Originally the Mill was moved from the village of Cargo in 1906 when rail came to Manildra. Today the mill runs 24 hours a day and is the hub of the area.
The Mill not only plays a huge role in the activity, employment, and economic stability of Manildra, but visually dominates standing proud and tall against the rural landscape.
Australia's oldest operating picture theatre, the Amusu Theatre, is also located in Manildra. Allan Tom started the theatre in 1923 as a travelling picture show before making it a permanent feature of the town in 1936. The theatre still screens new release films surrounded by the old world charm of yesteryear.
The town features a friendly country style pub, takeaway cafés, a well patronised town pool and several town parks. Fishing in the Boree or Mandagery Creeks is a popular past-time of visitors and locals alike.
