Salisbury Cathedral 6 min with narration by David Oakes
Salisbury Cathedral is unique amongst medieval English cathedrals having been built in just 38 years (1220 - 1258) in a single architectural style, early English Gothic. The tower and spire (Britain's tallest) were added about 50 years later. The building itself is remarkable, a testimony to the faith and practical skills of those who erected it.
But it is much more than a historical monument. It is a living church and a place of prayer. As the Cathedral Church of the Salisbury diocese it is Mother Church of several hundred parishes in Wiltshire and Dorset. It is also a centre of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
This short film is narrated by David Oakes, with photography and editing by Ash Mills. The organist was Daniel Cook playing Louis Vierne First Symphony Final mvt. #1

Pitch Perfect - Life in Salisbury Cathedral Choir
Every year Salisbury Cathedral invites children from School Years 2, 3 and 4 to try life as a chorister in a medieval Cathedral. Be a Chorister for a Day is an annual event (in November) that marks the beginning of the recruitment process for new choristers.
Being a chorister at the Cathedral is pretty special with its unbroken tradition of church music that stretches back for over 700 years in the present cathedral, and for a further 200 years before that in the cathedral at Old Sarum.
The choral tradition is part of our national heritage and has always played a vital role in the life of the Cathedral. To begin with, there were sixteen boy choristers, six Lay Vicars, the Director of Music, the Assistant Director of Music and the Organ Scholar, but in 1991 we took the historic step of forming another ‘top line’, bringing girl choristers into the Choral Foundation and choir school. Today the singing duties are divided equally between the two sets of choristers made up of boys and girls aged between 8 and 13 years old.
The choristers work hard and play hard. As well as sports, music and everyday school, they rehearse each morning for an hour from between 08.00 and again after school at 16.35 in preparation for the sung service (usually Evensong) at 17.30. During term-time Evensong is sung every day, with a sung Eucharist and Mattins each Sunday.
In addition, the choristers regularly take part in broadcasts, record CDs, tour abroad and give concerts all over the Diocese and even, occasionally, on board ship in Southampton.

Hoodwink Theatre - A Winter's Trail - at Salisbury Cathedral
Published on 19 Dec 2016
It is winter and snow is expected. A girl in white appears on a swing in the Cloister Garth. Geese fly overhead and the wind whistles…
Hoodwink’s sell-out promenade performance of 'A Winter’s Trail' has been running at Salisbury Cathedral for the last three nights (Friday 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 December).
What is ordinarily a small side chapel becomes a living room, lit by a familiar standard lamp. Jelly is served at a gigantic table by bustling matrons, and a boy on skis hurries up the nave aisle to ask his sweetheart out.
For a breathtaking moment a ballerina, 17-year-old Emily Harper from Salisbury’s Forest School of Dance, holds the stage - and as the spotlight shifts we are serenaded from on high.
In the Trinity Chapel fairy lights and paper pom-pom snowflakes, each made by volunteers who have written a special Christmas memory inside, beguile participants.
Old time music by the piano, dancers from the Wellington School of Dance, the unusually jaunty sound of the Cathedral’s famous Father Willis organ, and a happy gaggle playing with a gigantic ball, lit up from inside, complete the picture.
'A Winter’s Trail' was commissioned by Salisbury Cathedral and made possible by a generous grant from the Arts Council England.
Inspired by anecdotes and reminiscences collected from the residents of Robert Stokes Almshouse, Holmwood Care Home in Salisbury, and children from St Osmund’s Catholic Primary School, the professional cast are joined by a host of volunteers, making use of their skills in floristry, ballroom dancing, singing and performing (to name but a few).
Groups taking part include Wellington School of Dance, Mind the Gap and Salisbury Cathedral flower arrangers. Volunteers have also helped behind-the-scenes, making elements of the set during Hoodwink-led workshops and Snowflake Workshops in the Cathedral.
