The History of Avoca
Hilary & Donald Pratt tell the charming story of how a young teacher and a lawyer had a crazy plan and ended up rescuing the Avoca Mill, saving a tradition of handweaving that had been there since 1723; and how it became the successful Irish, family business it is today.

Avoca, County Wicklow, Ireland
When you think of the quintessential Irish small town with quaint pubs and shops (and where it's just as common to see a tractor on the road as it is to see cars) you'll be thinking of Avoca. Located just outside of Dublin this pretty little town is a perfect example of the warm spirit of Ireland and hints of the simpler life of the past. The delightful TV series Ballykissangel was filmed here and the real town is even more beautiful than it appears on TV. For more info check out the Avoca Travel Guide
Journey to Avoca Mills
Avoca Mills is the oldest woolen mill in Ireland, dating from the 1700s. It sits atop a hill in a tiny village. If there is a place where fairies live, I believe Avoca might be that place. I was enchanted by the beauty of everything in Avoca. The humblest and most simple objects are elevated to a level of artistic expression. Old objects recycled, painted, re-purposed, and used in a beautiful cottage style.
When I came home from Ireland, I found that every memory of place was accompanied by a new melody. I had worried in Ireland that I was not composing, though I had brought a small keyboard with me. I guess I WAS composing all the while, on a sub conscious level. This melody, Journey to Avoca, epitomizes for me the playful yet serious industry that is Avoca Mills. I recorded the sound track in my little home studio in East Tennessee. The photos I took while I was visiting Avoca Mills in March of this year.
