Israel Border Jericho Mount of Temptation
Our recent visit to Israel via Jordan.
Jericho is a city located near the Jordan River in the West Bank. The city was occupied by Jordan from 1948 to 1967, and has been held under Israeli occupation since 1967; administrative control was handed over to the Palestinian Authority in 1994.It is believed to be one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of more than 20 successive settlements in Jericho, the first of which dates back 11,000 years (9000 BC).
The Mount of Temptation is said to be the hill where Jesus PBUH was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:8). It is generally identified with Mount Quarantania, a mountain approximately 366 m (1200 feet) high, located about 11 km (6.8 mi) north-west of the West Bank town of Jericho.
Atop the mount is the Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Temptation.
In 1998 a 1300 meters long cable car was built from Jericho's Tel Sultan to the level of the monastery as a tourist attraction.

Israel 2018 VLOG #3 Bethlehem & The Road to Jericho
Leaving Jerusalem via the Israel Museum, which held Shrine of the book & Dead Sea Scrolls, we then crossed into the West Bank and visited Herodion- where King Herod once lived.
Going into Bethlehem we stopped off at the Square and Church where its alleged that Jesus was born. We stayed over night in Bethlehem and visited the West Bank wall and the Christian Bookshop before setting off on the road to Jericho.
The Judean Desert and the Jordan Valley had amazing views before stopping off at Jericho where part of the walls are still standing. We finished the day at the hot springs and Sachne.

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Elisa Moed, Travel advisor :
This is where John the Baptist resided. He was a hermit, and part of really experiencing the footsteps and really understanding the roots of Christianity is to come here and to take a look at the wilderness and the landscape and try to understand the lifestyle of John the Baptist. Elijah also spent his time in the Judean wilderness, Jesus spent time in the Judean wilderness. So, yes, it's a very important and very integral part of coming to the Holy Land and experiencing the Holy Land is to come into this wilderness.

We documented here a series of hermit cells. This is what you see here, the remains of those caves and built cells. They are all along these cliffs. We just came into the boundaries of this 'laura', which is a type of monastery.

27. SOUNDBITE (English) Yoram Tsafrir, Retired archaeologist :
From time to time we hear or know about few monks - I mean, single ones - that practice a full ascetic life; they are being hermits, real hermits. For how long, I don't know, but I guess they try. This is the idea, this is the ideal, but it is very, very hard to reach that point of hermitage.
28. Wide of Judean Desert mountains
LEADIN
A handful of monks still live in splendid isolation seeking peace and solitude in monasteries hewn from rock in the Judean Desert.
Monks have lived in the area for thousands of years, and to this day pilgrims travel there.
STORYLINE:
With cliffs plunging down hundreds of metres (feet) and arid rocky outcrops reaching for the sky, the Judean Desert is a place of eerie, empty beauty.

Zahi Shaked A tour guide in Israel and his camera
zahigo25@walla.com +972-54-6905522 tel סיור עם מורה הדרך ומדריך הטיולים צחי שקד 0546905522
My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Shaul Goldstein, head of Gush Etzion settlements and spokesman for settlers:
He was elected on a totally, totally different agenda. The opponent, Mr. Mitzna, proposed the same plan that Sharon is planning today, and he was refused and rejected from the people. He got only 19 mandates and Sharon got twice as much. So don't tell me that Sharon was selected on this. I voted for Sharon. I am not going to vote for Sharon next time.
5. Wide shot of Zion Square settlers holding protest against disengagement plan
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Woman settler, Vox Pop:
(camera pans down to poster while woman is speaking)
This is not democratic. The people didn't vote for that kind of action. And we are renewing the transfer in the European Nazis and we are in the same now. No more. No more. Finito. We finish this. We came from France. We came from Germany and we are in our country. You don't transfer Jews anymore. That used to be like that but not here. So we stay where we are implanted.
7. Man standing in front of banner
8. Wide shot of demonstration
STORYLINE:
Thousands of Jewish settlers and their backers demonstrated in Jerusalem on Sunday against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan to evacuate all settlements from Gaza and four West Bank enclaves, amid escalating rhetoric and warnings of assassinations and civil war.
The plan has upset the Israeli political scene, turning Sharon's backers into opponents and detractors into supporters, while sceptical Palestinians believe the whole plan is a trick to annex large parts of the West Bank to Israel.
Tens of thousands filled downtown Jerusalem to protest the proposed pullout, most of them Orthodox Jews and many of them teenagers. A huge banner behind the stage set the theme: Disengagement tears the people apart. Many waved blue and white Israeli flags.
Shaul Goldstein, a spokesman for the settlers, said: Don't tell me that Sharon was selected on this. I voted for Sharon. I am not going to vote for Sharon next time.
Though organisers pledged to prevent incitement to violence, there were signs that said the head of Sharon's disengagement committee would not be forgiven, and others that read, A time to love, a time to hate, quoting the biblical Book of Ecclessiastes.
The issue of incitement has been especially sensitive in Israel since the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin by an ultra-nationalist Jew opposed to peace making with the Palestinians.
Some Israeli commentators have compared the current atmosphere to the vitriolic period that preceded Rabin's death.
The Gaza withdrawal is a key component of Sharon's disengagement plan, along with a separation barrier being built in the West Bank.
The barrier, which Israel says is needed to block against suicide bombers, has drawn widespread international condemnation. The Israeli Supreme Court has also criticised the barrier, saying it causes too much hardship on Palestinians, and ordered changes in the route.
