MONON RAILROAD INDIANA THE HOOSIER LINE PROMOTIONAL FILM 71872
Support Our Channel :
Created in the 1950s by the Monon Railroad and featuring the Purdue Glee Club and hosted by a Hoosier, this vintage film shows the Monon Railroad at the height of its operations. The Monon Railroad, also known as the Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville Railway operated from 1897–1956, was an American railroad that operated almost entirely within the state of Indiana. The Monon was merged into the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in 1971, and much of the former Monon right of way is operated today by CSX Transportation. In 1970 it operated 540 miles (870 km) of road on 792 miles (1,275 km) of track; that year it reported 1320 million ton-miles of revenue freight and zero passenger-miles.
The railroad got the name Monon from the convergence of its main routes in Monon, Indiana. From Monon, the mainlines reached out to Chicago, Louisville, Indianapolis and Michigan City, Indiana. In Chicago the Monon's passenger trains served Dearborn Station. Branches connected the Louisville mainline to Victoria, Indiana and French Lick, Indiana.
A map of the Monon trackage would show it in the form of an X, laid out over the state of Indiana. One leg ran from Dearborn Station in Chicago, Illinois to Union Station in Indianapolis, Indiana, the first Union Station in the United States. The second leg ran from Michigan City, Indiana to Louisville, Kentucky. The X crossed at its namesake city of Monon, Indiana. The main line ran down the middle of streets in several cities, notably Lafayette, New Albany and Bedford. It Monon had seven sections. Beginning in the north, Section One was from the Indiana line to Lafayette, passing through the Monon switch in Monon. As a primary passenger route, it connected to Section Four running between Lafayette and Bloomington. This route reached the Ohio River over Section Five from Bloomington to New Albany. From this southern route, Sections Six and Seven were spurs to the west. Section Six served the Coal Fields between Midland and Clay City connecting to the main line at Wallace Jct, just south of Cloverdale. Section Seven provided passenger service to the resort hotels in West Baden and French Lick, through a connection at Orleans.
The other primary line, mainly a freight line, included Section Two from Michigan City on Lake Michigan to Monon and then Section three from Monon to Indianapolis. Although each route had its primary traffic, freight and passengers were carried over all parts of the line.
The Monon served five major Universities in Indiana, Purdue University (West Lafayette), Wabash College (Crawfordsville), DePauw University (Greencastle), Indiana University (Bloomington), and Butler University (Indianapolis). The state's decision to put Purdue University at Lafayette in 1869 had partly to do with Monon service, there since 1852. So important was the college traffic that the road painted its passenger rolling stock the red and gray of Indiana University, and painted its freight engines black and gold of Purdue University. In 1959, after the Indianapolis to Chicago trains were discontinued, it didn't make sense to continue with two color schemes, and to economize, the red and gray passenger scheme was slowly converted to black and gold.

Unused/Abandoned Portions of the Former Monon Railroad in Delphi, Indiana
Remnants and times are listed below. In this video, I explore the former Monon Railroad right-of-way through Delphi, Indiana. Most of the line was abandoned by CSX (the last owner) in the late 1980s and removed in the early 1990s. Part of the line was kept and acquired by Norfolk Southern to serve the limestone quarry on the west side of Delphi. Track still remains but hasn't been used since about 2009. This video shows footage from Pittsburg just west of Delphi, to the Deer Creek trestle that is still owned by CSX. Different parts of this video were filmed at different times of the year. This was filmed mostly in 2016 with very few 2015 shots.
Sections of the right-of-way:
0:39 Former bridge site at Pittsburg, Indiana
1:29 Remaining rails and crossings of the right-of-way (owned by Norfolk Southern)
14:15 Rails removed but railroad bed remains
22:40 Railroad bed remains but has been turned into a trail

Abandoned Monon Railroad Branch and Side Spurs in Lafayette Indiana
This railroad branch and its side spurs were in service up until the 1990s. Mainly used by the Monon, this branch connected with the Monon Railroad (later LN) near Wabash Avenue and traveled north where it met with side spurs off of the New York Central and Nickel Plate Railroads (later NW) near the Wabash River Bridge. I believe both the railroads interchanged at this location. It was used to serve industries for over 50 years until finally being abandoned.
The Final Abandoned Streetcar Trolley Tracks under State Street in West Lafayette, Indiana
Crews have spent the last six months digging up State Street in West Lafayette to completely makeover the road. Old streetcar trolley tracks, which were part of the Lafayette Street Railway, were revealed under the street after being paved and covered shortly after abandonment in 1940. This system of rails was started in 1884 and abandoned in 1940. In this video, rail remnants are seen on the Levee and the section of State Street around Russell street where the end of the line was.

As my father and I began our railfanning trip to Indiana and Ohio, we stopped at Munster, Indiana, which was once a very busy location with plenty of history.
0:00-0:38- We are looking north, and then south on the abandoned ROW of the Monon's mainline that heading north to State Line Junction in Hammond.
0:38-0:54 We are then looking south at Arline Junction, where the Pennsylvania Railroad's Panhandle mainline once crossed the Monon. Note that the tracks are gone, but the diamond remains! Beginning in February, 1972, Amtrak's FLORIDIAN began using the PRR through here to reach Logansport and Indianapolis. The JAMES WHITCOMB RILEY joined in October, 1973. Both trains were routed off this line in 1974 after the FRA condemned it due to unsafe track conditions. Amtrak service returned in 1975, when the FLORIDAN was rerouted through on the Monon until it was discontinued in Fiscal Year 1979. On October 1,1980, Amtrak service again returned with the HOOSIER STATE taking the PRR Bernice Cutoff to reach the Panhandle line. The Panhandle was used for a few miles to this location, where the train used a southwest connecting track to reach the Monon. This connecting track ran where the new strip of gravel is located at 0:48. Does anyone know when Conrail stopped using this line? The tracks did pick up to the east a few miles, and I know they are still in use at Hartsdale.
In 1994, The HOOSIER STATE was rerouted off the Panhandle Line and onto the L&N line through Dolton and down to Thornton Junction, where it swings onto the Grand Trunk Western to reach the Monon at 1:04. Note the diamond sitting off to the side. This location was known as Manyard. Note the abandoned signals still sanding sentinel along the overgrown rails.
The reason for the Monon ROW remaining intact, is because the Indiana suburbs intend on reactivating it for commuter service. Does anyone know when the last CSX train used the Monon through here?

Old Abandoned Illinois Central Railroad Bridge Across Wabash River
8/12/17 - On my way to Holiday World, we stopped by the old IC bridge across the Wabash River in between Illinois and Indiana. This bridge used to be owned to the Illinois Central railway, it was abandoned in 1996, and it was partially destroyed by flooding in 2005. As seen in the video part of the bridge on the Illinois side. The bridges we were standing under were I-64 which are the road bridges that connect Illinois and Indiana. Here is a website I found showing more information about the railroad bridge:
