Escape to the Country - Wiltshire ...
Wiltshire is a county in South West England with an area of 3,485 km2 (1,346 square miles). It is landlocked and borders the counties of Dorset, Somerset, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire. The county town was originally Wilton, after which the county is named, but Wiltshire Council is now based in the county town of Trowbridge.
Wiltshire is characterised by its high downland and wide valleys. Salisbury Plain is noted for being the location of the Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles and other ancient landmarks, and as a training area for the British Army. The city of Salisbury is notable for its mediaeval cathedral. Important country houses open to the public include Longleat, near Warminster, and the National Trust's Stourhead, near Mere.
Wiltshire is notable for its pre-Roman archaeology. The Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age people that occupied southern Britain built settlements on the hills and downland that cover Wiltshire. Stonehenge and Avebury are perhaps the most famous Neolithic sites in the UK.
In the 6th and 7th centuries Wiltshire was at the western edge of Saxon Britain, as Cranborne Chase and the Somerset Levels prevented the advance to the west. The Battle of Bedwyn was fought in 675 between Escuin, a West Saxon nobleman who had seized the throne of Queen Saxburga, and King Wulfhere of Mercia. In 878 the Danes invaded the county. Following the Norman Conquest, large areas of the country came into the possession of the crown and the church.
At the time of the Domesday Survey the industry of Wiltshire was largely agricultural; 390 mills are mentioned, and vineyards at Tollard and Lacock. In the succeeding centuries sheep-farming was vigorously pursued, and the Cistercian monastery of Stanley exported wool to the Florentine and Flemish markets in the 13th and 14th centuries.
In the 17th century English Civil War Wiltshire was largely Parliamentarian. The Battle of Roundway Down, a Royalist victory, was fought near Devizes.
In 1794 it was decided at a meeting at the Bear Inn in Devizes to raise a body of ten independent troops of Yeomanry for the county of Wiltshire, which formed the basis for what would become the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry, who served with distinction both at home and abroad, during the Boer War, World War I and World War II. The Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry currently lives on as Y (RWY) Squadron, based in Swindon, and B (RWY) Squadron, based in Salisbury, of the Royal Wessex Yeomanry.
Around 1800 the Kennet and Avon Canal was built through Wiltshire, providing a route for transporting cargoes from Bristol to London until the development of the Great Western Railway.
Information on the 261 civil parishes of Wiltshire is available on Wiltshire Council's Wiltshire Community History website which has maps, demographic data, historic and modern pictures and short histories.
The local nickname for Wiltshire natives is Moonrakers. This originated from a story of smugglers who managed to foil the local Excise men by hiding their alcohol, possibly French brandy in barrels or kegs, in a village pond. When confronted by the excise men they raked the surface to conceal the submerged contraband with ripples, and claimed that they were trying to rake in a large round cheese visible in the pond, really a reflection of the full moon. The officials took them for simple yokels or mad and left them alone, allowing them to continue with their illegal activities. Many villages claim the tale for their own village pond, but the story is most commonly linked with The Crammer in Devizes.

A Castle At Night - 5043 Blows Off Through Hatton - 2014
5043 Returns home with the Berk & Hants Aquae Sulis Tour, and is seen passing through Hatton Station.
I was hoping for a better run past, as you usually get a powerful performance through Hatton as other videos have shown, and with it been a standing start from Warwick Parkway i was expecting something else, though with 5043 blowing off it does mask that elegant Castle bark. Oh well still a fine sight, and good to compare my other cameras at night. Hope you enjoy.
4965 Rood Ashton Hall & 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe The Cornishman 27th April 2013
Great Western Railway duo of Hall and an Castle double over the south devon banks can't be missed. Day off work saw the Tyseley locos Hall no.4965 Rood Ashton Hall & 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe fresh from a fornight ago from the Mooraker railtour to Salisbury ran the leg from Bristol Temple Meads to Plymouth and return.
Start on the famous bank at Dainton first time to go on the bank it was worth it. The duo was about 5 mins early storming the 1in38 climb to Dainton Bank on an note of very windy day. My luck was out with the sun behind the cloud as per usual came out of the cloud after the double header came past.
The return run was very close call compared to the Great Britain tour. After a quick visit to Paignton, we started at Langstone Rock near Dawlish Warren found out it was very windy, so we headed down to the station hoping to be a little less windy but it wasn't. Only found out we came just to the station the double header was going though Teignmouth! Again 4965 & 5043 was 10mins early though Dawlish Warren lucky the sun came out.
Then it was off to Bristol Temple Meads that was interesting ride to there. Only look on Realtime trains for where it gone pass found out while i was at Exeter that it was left at Tiverton Parkway 22mins early was infront of us. Time we got to Taunton we was 15mins behind it so my luck was up there, as we was catching up fast they put 4965 & 5043 in Yatton loop and we took over it. 4965 & 5043 was seen arriving and departure at Bristol Temple Meads and to St Phillips Marsh. 47773 was to take the train back to Tyseley.
The next day 28th April saw the locos heading back to Tyseley. Seen arriving at Swindon at 10 mins early again then departing again.
I spent the weekend with Adam (adamtorbayexpress), Kristain (letmadnessbegin) and Jake (jakeyboygen) at Dainton, I say you must got to look at there videos really good!
D1015 on The Western Lickeys the Banks 10th May 2014
On 10th May 2014 Vintage Trains Limited ran The Western Lickeys the Banks Rail tour with D1015 Western Champion. The train originated from Solihull heading south through Oxford, Swindon, Exeter and onto Plymouth where another Railtour departed with steam Locomotive 5029 Nunney Castle under the aptly name of One Zulu Forty Eight being the Headcode of the train, returning to Solihull. The Western meanwhile returned to Tyseley with the originating rail tour via Bristol and the infamous Lickey Incline near Bromsgrove. A wonderful concept I think for VNTL to offer both Heritage Diesel and Steam traction in two separate rail tours!. Excellent is all that can be said.

Enjoy, GRJ.
5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and 5029 Nunney Castle 03-04-10 and 06-04-10
Two GWR locomotives took to Southern Rails for the first time over the weekend of the 3rd April 2010. First is 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe with a 10 coach train with the Moonraker. The trip was organised by Vintage Trains but traveled along a very un-GWR route, the LSWR to Salisbury.
We first see 5043 at Andover where a small crowd as gathered for the special. We do not have a two camera set up as I was on holiday in America. These clips were taken with our camera by a very good friend.
Next is Salisbury, where the train terminated. A quick turn around and she was back, this time heading through Grateley.
Four days later, the Railway Touring Company ran the first part of the Great Britain III, this time with Castle 5029 Nunney Castle. Once again I was in America and our good friend helped me out once again.
Our first clip is only 12 seconds long. It is of 5029 storming towards her water stop at Challow. We arrived a little later than planned and so our tripod was in the process of being setup when the engine raced by. (We only catch a small amount of the train as she goes by)
Next comes the bridge at Uffington. A few whistles later to the men in the orange jackets and the GBIII is heading for Devon.
Enjoy!
This will be on Southern Steam 2010. See our website for more details.
