Places to see in ( Fleetwood - UK )
Fleetwood is a town and civil parish within the Wyre district of Lancashire, England, lying at the northwest corner of the Fylde. The site of the town has been continuously inhabited since the Middle Ages. Fleetwood acquired its modern character in the 1830s, when the principal landowner Peter Hesketh-Fleetwood, High Sheriff and MP, conceived an ambitious plan to re-develop the town to make it a busy seaport and railway spur. He commissioned the distinguished Victorian architect Decimus Burton to design a number of substantial civic buildings, including two lighthouses. Hesketh-Fleetwood's transport terminus schemes failed to materialise.
Decline of the fishing industry began in the 1960s, hastened by the Cod Wars with Iceland, though fish processing is still a major economic activity in Fleetwood. The town's most notable employer today is Lofthouse of Fleetwood, manufacturer of the lozenge Fisherman's Friend which is exported around the world.
Fleetwood is located on the Fylde Peninsula, 8 miles (13 km) north of Blackpool, on the western side of the mouth of the River Wyre. The town itself is on a peninsula, almost 2 miles (3 km) wide, bounded to the west by the Irish Sea, to the north by Morecambe Bay and to the east by the River Wyre. Access to Fleetwood is thus restricted, and for many years there were only two roads into and out of the town. A large sandbank, the North Wharf, extends some 2 1⁄4 miles (3.6 km) north into Morecambe Bay, and is exposed at low tide.
Fleetwood's economy still revolves around the traditional areas of fishing, tourism, port activity and light industry, but since the early 1970s the town has continued to struggle economically. A government report in 2006 stated that three of the town's five wards fall into the 5% to 10% most deprived wards in England. The town's largest and most prominent single employer is Lofthouse's of Fleetwood Ltd., manufacturers of Fisherman's Friend—a menthol lozenge popular worldwide and especially in Japan.
The Mount and the entire length of Fleetwood Promenade has an uninterrupted view across Morecambe Bay, a view described by author Bill Bryson in Chapter 23 of his book Notes From a Small Island as easily one of the most beautiful in the world, with unforgettable views across to the green and blue Lakeland hills: Scafell, Coniston Old Man, the Langdale Pikes. Directly across the Esplanade from the Mount lies the Marine Hall and Marine Gardens, Wyre Borough's largest entertainment venue, opened in 1935.
The 13 hectares of Fleetwood Memorial Park was developed out of the earlier Warrenhurst Park, itself an early-C20 park designed by Thomas Lumb of Blackpool. In 1917 the park was renamed Memorial Park in memory of those who died in the First World War. The memorial statue was added a few years later and memorial trees planted by the children who lost relatives. Fleetwood Pier, also known as 'Victoria Pier', was a feature of the town from its construction in 1910 until it was destroyed by fire in September 2008.

LYRICS Hotel California - Eagles
On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
'This could be heaven or this could be Hell'
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
I thought I heard them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes Bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain
Please bring me my wine'
He said, 'we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)
Such a lovely face
They livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice
And she said, we are all just prisoners here, of our own device
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back to the place I was before
Relax, said the night man
We are programmed to receive
You can check out any time you like
But you can never leave!

Will this Abandoned Railway Ever Open Again? - Poulton to Fleetwood
For a town that holds about 25k residence you’d be thinking I’d be stood on a platform explaining why the current building has been modernised to suit the town’s needs, however for those who don’t live locally I have to sadly say Fleetwood is one of the biggest towns in the UK without a railway station.
Fleetwood lies on the most northern tip of the Fylde Coast, its sister resort Blackpool just 7 miles south.
Mr Peter Heskeh one of the main landowners and founders of the town, originally considered naming the town Wyreton or New Liverpool, but prior to this he took on his maternal ancestors name, thus 1831 he decided to name the town as Fleetwood.
In the beginning in 1835 he commissioned various sites for a station to be built, especially alongside the river Wyre. The original station plan was for the end of London Street, directly from the Mount, but the plan was not followed.
Being the preferred location, just by the estuary The Preston & Wyre Railway and Harbour Company Incorporated had the original station built in 1840.
A year after officially opening in 1841 for seven years after the line from Fleetwood though Preston off the London was the West Coast Mainline. Because with the high hills and steep valleys of the Lake District no trains could venture up that far.
So if you wanted to get up into the Lakes or further north to Scotland this is as far as you could go. Alighting here you would then jump onto a Packet Boat to Ardrossan in Ayrshire to finish your journey. A 27 hour trip if you went to Glasgow. Hence why one of the main hotels in the town is called The Euston, people would often settle here overnight before continuing north.
This all came to an end in 1848 once the line was built over Shap in the Lakes and beyond to the Borders. The single-track line ran over an embankment with timber trestle bridge northwards across the marshy Wyre estuary, with the station at the far end of the bridge.
The harbour area was very extent with sidings and tracks for many industries and uses especially to transport fresh fish.
Once a very busy bustling well deserved station, however it fell victim to the beaching report commissioned by the government to help salvage an ageing, dilapidated and expensive public run railway.
Closed in 1966 Fleetwood's Wyre Dock Station about half a mile south was renamed Fleetwood but passenger services between Poulton-le-Fylde and Fleetwood were withdrawn after the last train on 30 May 1970 and then station was demolished.
The line stayed for the Wyre Dock as light industry remained in the area, and freight like the ICI trains ran along the line until 1999 then the whole line was shut.
Closed it has been, but not forgotten. Most of the track bed and a single line railway remains. Severed at the Poulton le Fylde end during the electrification it continues to run along via Thornton - Cleveleys and stops short of the town by about half of a mile.
The station at Thornton- Cleveleys & Burn Naze was leased by Network Rail to the Poulton & Wyre Railway Society allowing volunteers access to the site to return the station to a restored condition.
With this, and the restoration of a passenger train there is hope the line will one day see services back to Fleetwood. Granted, not in the same spot but nor was the last main station.
For the life of it’s railway history it has come and gone so fast, it had changed so very much but the passion to keep a railway of sorts going to this town has never been axed, demolished or lost.
I really hope we see a train service back along this line soon. Never mind the enthusiast, the people of Fleetwood need it.

Fleetwood Heritage Day 2018 | Vintage Arcade Machines
It was recently the annual UK Heritage Day, when they open up historic buildings that aren't normally open to the public, so I went back to my home town to have a look inside the Mount and the Lower Light House. I also paid a visit to the Harbour Light's Arcade to drop some serious change into their collection of antique 'amusements'.

Drive along Fleetwood Seafront from Sea Cadets to the Museum
Fleetwood seafront is a changing coastline - come for a drive from the Sea Cadets base not far from Rossall Point past the boating lakes, the Mount and Marine Hall.
One of Fleetwood's oldest building, the North Euston Hotel, stands proud opposite the Lower Lighthouse, and beyond that is the RNLI lifeboat station and seafront cafes and amusements - next to the tram lines which connect the Port to Cleveleys and Blackpool.
A little further along the coast road you pass even more period buildings to arrive at our final destination on this clip of Fleetwood Museum - originally built as the Customs House in the early 1800's.
