Matsushima, Japan - Oshima Island (2019)
Matsushima is known as one of the three most scenic places of Japan. Take a ferry ride, check out the museums, or dine on fresh seafood. However, an often overlooked but easily accessible attraction is Oshima Island. The admission free island is a ten minute walk from Matsushimakaigan Station behind the former and now demolished Marinepia Aquarium.
The island is known for its Buddhist history and great views of the bay. Similar to the the caves found in front of Matsushima's Zuigan-ji Temple, hand-dug nooks and crannies decorate the cliffs and rocks here. Inside these caves Buddhist priests meditated and performed various religious practices. You'll also see Buddhist artifacts and statuary, some shrines with religious decorations scattered about, and a unique perspective of the bay.
Matsushima (松島町 Matsushima-machi) is a town in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. As of 1 June 2017, the town had an estimated population of 14,105, and a population density of 263 persons per km². The total area of the town is 53.56 square kilometres (20.68 sq mi). It is most famous as the location of Matsushima Bay, one of the Three Views of Japan, and is also the site of the Zuigan-ji, Entsū-in and Kanrantei.

Matsushima Bay near Sendai in Miyagi is considered one of the three scenic views of Japan (日本三景--Nihon Sankei).
It has about 250 islands of different sizes covered in pine trees. The islands range from only a few square feet with a single pine tree to larger islands with dozens of inhabitants. The bay is also known for the cultivation of oysters.
This was our first of many trips there. We explored the gardens near Entsuin Temple, the hand-carved caves used for meditation and Kate even tried oysters for the first time. We also got to paint our own Kokeshi dolls, which were handmade in front of us by a craftsman on his lathe and take a sightseeing boat tour of the bay to see all of the islands.

Matsushima Bay, famous for some 260 tiny islands (島 - shima) covered in pines (松 - matsu) — hence the name -- and ranked as one of Japan's Three Great Views.
In 1689, Haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited Matsushima on the trip recorded in Narrow Road to the Deep North. A well-known poem often attributed to Basho claims to record his reaction, signifying that nothing more could be said:

Today's Matsushima is perhaps a little less inspiring, but still a worthwhile day trip if in the region.
The town did not suffer significant damange due to the Great East Japan Earthquake; the tsunami damage was minimal. The temples, shrines, and sight seeing destinations are still there and still worth the trip.
The Senseki train from Sendai is currently functional and travel to Matsushima-kaigan station is possible.

The town is only a short distance from prefectural capital Sendai.
By train
Most visitors arrive on the JR Senseki Line (仙石線) connecting Sendai (25 minutes by express train or 40 minutes by local) and Ishinomaki. The most convenient station is Matsushima-Kaigan (松島海岸). The Matsushima station on the JR Tohoku Main Line is located a fair distance away from the seashore.
From Tokyo, the Shinkansen bullet train runs to Sendai for connection to the Senseki Line. The total one-way fare is ¥10,900 using the fastest, all-reserved shinkansen service, and the journey to Matsushima-Kaigan lasts around 2 3/4 hours. There is no charge if you use the Japan Rail Pass.
By boat
Another popular choice is to take the JR Senseki line train to Hon-Shiogama (don't mistake it with JR Tohuku line train to Shiogama station), connect to a sightseeing boat to Matsushima (viewing some of the famous islands along the way), then return by train.
Get around
Matsushima's seaside attractions are within walking distance of the train station and ferry pier, but the best views are from mountaintops not so easy to reach on foot. The most spectacular views are from Saigyo Modoshi no Matsu Park, a ¥660 cab ride up from the station. It is covered with cherry blossoms in the spring, but the food available there is nothing special. Other overlooks are Sōkanzan, a promontory that juts out into the bay, and Ōgitani, a hill across the coastal highway from Sokanzan.

Zuigan-ji Temple (瑞巌寺), [2]. 8AM-3:30PM (sometimes later). Matsushima's top Zen temple with over a thousand years of history, but not a top choice for relaxation: tickets are sold from vending machines and guides shouting into megaphones herd tour groups through the temple, which has been turning into a museum with everything of interest partitioned off and/or packaged in glass cases. The approach with its moss-covered Kannon statues is atmospheric though. Repairs on the main temple roof started in 2009 and are projected to last 5 or more years. ¥700. edit
Kanran-tei Pavilion (観覧亭). Originally built in Kyoto by famed Shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi, this was eventually moved to Matsushima by Date Tadamune in 1645 and is the largest Momoyama-style tea house in Japan. An excellent place to stop for a ¥200 cup of tea (traditional Japanese sweets included) and a view of the Matsushima coastline.
Fukuura Island (福浦島; Fukuura-jima). Connected to the mainland by a long bridge, the island is crisscrossed in all directions by paths small and large, paved and muddy, well-trod and overgrown. A circuit of the island won't take more than an hour and there are some very sparsely beautiful spots to be seen. An interesting anecdote, there is a local superstition that crossing the bridge with a girlfriend/boyfriend will cause a breakup.
Do
Ōtakamori (大高森). One of The 4 Famous Places to view Matsushima Bay and a good place to catch the sunset over the island. The start of the 1-km trail to the top is some 3 kilometers from the Pila Youth Hostel in Oku-Matsushima.

Yamadera, Japan - Full Tour (2019)
Yama-dera (山寺 lit. Mountain Temple), (山号 宝珠山; Sangō Hōshu-zan) is about a twenty-minute train ride (Senzan Line) northeast of Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. The temple is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Historic Site.
The area is named after the common name of the temple of Risshaku-ji (立石寺), founded in 860 AD by the priest Ennin (円仁) (AD 793 or 794–864), who is better known in Japan by his posthumous name, Jikaku Daishi (慈覺大師). In 847 he returned to Japan from China and in 854 he became the chief priest of the Tendai sect at Enryaku-ji. Risshaku-ji was founded as a branch temple of Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei near Kyoto. Even today the ritual fires brought from Enryaku-ji are still burning in the main temple. It developed into the major Heian-period (794–1185) temple for rural Dewa province (now Yamagata and Akita prefectures). This main temple, the Konpon-chūdō, an important cultural asset, is said to have been built in 1356 by Shiba Kaneyori, lord of Yamagata Castle. Most of Risshaku-ji was destroyed during the local wars of the early 16th century. It was rebuilt in 1543 under the monk Enkai. By the Edo period (1600–1868) Risshaku-ji was a powerful institution possessing a fief of 1,420 koku.
The present Konpon-chūdō (Main Hall) is a Muromachi period (1333–1568) construction of beech, which is rare as a building material. The temples clinging to the steep rocky hillsides are picturesque and unusual. The thousand step climb through the dense cedar trees is worth making to the temples at the top and for the view from them. The principal image of the main temple is the Heian-period seated wooden image of Yakushi Nyorai (the Buddha Bhaisajyaguru), an important cultural asset. Yamadera holds many other important cultural assets in its treasure house, the Hihokan, including standing wooden images of Shaka Nyorai, Yakushi Nyorai and Amida Nyorai, a seated wooden image of Dengyo Daishi, a hanging wooden mandala of Buddha, and a stone monument of the Nyohō-kyō Sutra from 1144.
Yama-dera is where the well-known haiku poet Matsuo Bashō wrote his famous haiku ah this silence / sinking into the rocks / voice of cicada in 1689. A museum of Basho's writings and paintings and other related art, the Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum, is a short walk up the hill on the opposite side of the steep valley. In 1996, the Ministry of the Environment selected the cicadas of Yama-dera as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.

Bike ride at Chiteinomori Museum Park, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan. It's a half of April in Sendai City - Japan. Sunny but very windy day. I drive next to the museum Chiteinomori surrounded by a small park. Museum portrays life in the Stone Age. I wasn't inside, but maybe someday I will visit this place with my japanese wife Minako. Small park has a Japanese charm.
