JANICE WONG - The Kochi, Japan Prefecture Tour | Wanderspiel Presents
WANDERSPIEL tours Japan's Kochi Prefecture for a unique travel insight with JANICE WONG, celebrated pastry chef from Singapore of 2:am dessert bar fame, with her namesake 'Janice Wong Dessert Bar' present in Tokyo, Macau and Singapore.
Janice's trip objective was to be inspired - through a cultural immersion, across a multitude of facets of the Kochi Prefecture in Japan.
The Kochi Prefecture has plenty of offer - from drinking the source-to-table tea at Kunitomo Tea Plantation to understanding tradition at Paper Museum Inocho, and hand-made wooden products at Tosaryu.
Naturally, taste is imperative to Chefs.
Wanderspiel captures an array of tasting experiences, from an array of Finger Lime, to meeting the farmers and tasting the unique-to-Kochi citruses (the Naoshichi and Buntan)at the Naoshichi Farm and Shiraki Orchard Buntan Farmer.
Witnessing mornings at Sukumo Fish Market and the processes at the Takeuchi Dried Bonito Factory were other key highlights, with the tour ending at Hokiyama Cutlery, where exquisite Japanese knives are made.
One thing for sure - Janice did draw much inspiration from the majestic surroundings of Kochi, in sight, sound, smell and her tactile interaction with the immediate environment around her.

Japanese Paper Making (和紙 Washi) in Kochi, Japan
Learn all about the ancient art of Japanese Paper Making!
Let's visit Kochi, Japan. Along the southeastern coastline of Shikoku Island, you will find this culturally rich city full of exquisite nature and abundant history. Now becoming one of the newest ports-of-call during Japan itineraries by the major cruise lines, Kochi is definitely a city where you will want to take a second look.
In addition to the historical townscapes such as Kochi Castle, old sake breweries, traditional markets and hot springs, you definitely want to experience one of the region's most famous cultural traditions, Tosa Washi - the art of handmade Japanese paper. Today, we visit Tosawashi Kogeimura Qruad Paper Making Craftwork Village.
The word 和紙 (Washi) comes from wa meaning Japanese and shi meaning paper. Washi is made using fibers from the inner bark of the gampi tree, the mitsumata shrub, or the paper mulberry (kozo) bush. As a Japanese craft, it is registered as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage.
The Tosa brand of high-quality washi (Japanesed paper) handmade in Kochi Prefecture has a history of more than 1,000 years. It has been designated by the central government as traditional craftwork and is being produced in areas including Tosa City and Ino Town. In Ino, 0.03-mm-thick Tosa tengujoshi, the world’s thinnest handmade paper, is manufactured. At Tosawashi Kogeimura (craftwork village) Qraud and Japanese Paper Museum in Ino, you can experience papermaking, and create your own original postcards and paper fans, among other items.
Kochi is also known as “Tosa, the Land of Sake.” The locals are not shy to tell you about their many sake drinking games. Additionally, particularly unusual in Japan culture, Kochi women are very involved in the drinking culture. They serve meals on large plates instead of many small ones so they can serve quickly and then immediately join in the drinking comradery.
Ready for more? Maybe it's time for a trip to Japan!

<概要>

Kochi Castle (Japan)
Kōchi Castle is a castle located in Kōchi, Kōchi Prefecture, Japan.
The main entrance is directly across from the west entrance of the Obiyamachi shopping area. Visitors are asked to remove their footwear before entering the building, however slippers are provided.
As the castle is quite old, the tatami rooms are visible but not accessible. There is a small museum area with information entirely in Japanese. This museum houses several cultural artifacts of the Tosa region not native to the castle itself. The upper rooms of the tower are all empty, but visitors are allowed to climb to the top. There is a railing but no net around the balcony.
Handicap access is extremely limited, as the approach to the castle involves many steps, and there is no elevator.
The castle grounds are now a public park, and a popular location in spring for hanami. They contain the Prefectural Library and the Kōchi Literary Museum, in addition to statues of notable scions of the Yamanouchi family.

Cyoko Tamai - 2014 Japan Society Summer Artist Residency
Reviving the legacy of Japan Society Gallery's Artist Residency program of the 1950s and 1960s, which gave international opportunities to such visionary talents as Shikō Munakata and Yayoi Kusama, the Gallery continues to act as the major springboard for newly emerging talents from Japan.
For the 2014 residency program taking place during July, we have selected Cyoko Tamai (b. 1987, Kōchi Prefecture; lives and works in Tokyo), who brings out the expressive potentials of the medium of ink on paper painting. Tamai skillfully treads the space between the apparent fragility of paper and the core strength of its material nature, accentuated by the subtlety of ink.
Come by the Open Studio on Saturday, July 19th to meet the artist and view some of her works.
Born in 1987 in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, Cyoko Tamai received BFA in Music (2011) and MFA in Japanese Painting (2014) from Tokyo University of the Arts. In her work, she pursues the finest lines that are the smallest unit of painting, using a steel dip pen rather than a paintbrush or ink brush conventionally used in Japanese painting. She considers her painting process staining of the thin fibers that comprise a sheet of paper. With the thin nib of her pen, Tamai pulls out fibers after fibers from the sheet of paper, literally deconstructing the painting surface to create an approximately two-inch-high, fuzzed relief that appears to defy gravity.
About Cyoko Tamai
Tamai's work has been included in the 2009 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in Niigata Prefecture even before she received BFA. Since then her work has been presented in various solo and group exhibitions in Japan, including: Cyoko TAMAI Exhibition, Ginza Surugadai Gallery, Tokyo (2014); What is Drawing--a show of competition winners, Galerie Simon, Tokyo (2012); Young Artists, Daimaru Kochi, Tokyo (2013); Next Art, Matsuya Ginza, Tokyo (2013); ShinPA!!!!!!!, Obuse Museum of Art, Nagano Prefecture and Sato Museum of Art, Tokyo (2013). Tamai is a recipient of a grant from the Sato International Cultural Foundation in Tokyo (2013) and the Ataka Awards from Tokyo University of the Arts (2013).

I was born in New Zealand and studied Japanese at Victoria University before coming to Japan. I currently work as an English Instructor at ECC Kokusai School of Foreign Languages in Osaka. When I first came over I got homesick but I made good Japanese friends and learnt what warm people they can be. My new friends introduced me to places of beautiful nature. So far, I've visited Kobe, Himeji, Kyoto, Nara, Shirahama, Okayama, Hiroshima and Kochi and they were all great.

I'm from China. My mother studied translating in Japan and, through that influence, I also became interested in the country. I first came to Japan as an exchange student in my first year of university. I'm currently studying marketing at Kansai Gakuin University. I absolutely love the Kansai region. The people are friendly and interesting. The food in Kansai is also very delicious; Kobe beef, Osaka takoyaki, the ramen in Wakayama but to name a few.
