The Ditsong National Museum of Natural History AKA The Transvaal Museum
The Transvaal Museum is South Africa's leading natural history museum. It provides a memorable experience for the whole family and is open 7 days a week.
Transvaal Museum Mammal Hall in Pretoria The Transvaal Museum was founded in 1892. The museum changed locations a number of times as its collection grew. By 1925 the museum moved to its current location, a beautiful sandstone building on Paul Kruger Street. The entrance of this imposing building is decorated with the skeletons of dinosaurs and even a whale.
Some of the collection of the museum, which remained behind in its former location in Boom Street, became known as the National Cultural History Museum in 1964.
The museum currently houses a vast taxidermy collection as well as a number of fossils.
There are four exhibition halls:
Genesis of Life I and II provides a journey through the development of the animal kingdom, from single-celled organisms, right through the human beings. The Genesis of Life II hall is also known as the Mammal Hall.
The Austin Roberts Bird Hall holds a collection of Southern African birds, arranged according to their number in the Roberts Bird Guide. General information on migration, feeding and flight of birds can also be seen in this very well arranged hall.
The Geoscience Museum is a comprehensive collection of different minerals, crystals, and gemstones in Southern Africa, provided by the Council for Geoscience. Where such minerals can be found, as well as what they are used for is thoroughly described in this hall.
There is also a Discovery Centre on the property which provides a hands-on experience to make learning about nature and science more enjoyable.
Night Tours, Science Magic shows and a behind the scenes tour of the Research Department are provided.

South African National Museum of Military History
South African National Museum of Military History
During the First World War (1914 - 1918) no formal showcase was made of South Africa’s involvement in that war.In 1940, Capt J Agar-Hamilton was appointed official historian of
the Union Defence Forces. The formation of an Historical Research Committee that same year was to ensure the preservation of documents and military memorabilia and lay the
foundation for the establishment of a museum. The South African National War Museum was officially opened on 29 August 1947 by the then Prime Minister of South Africa, Field
Marshal J C Smuts PC, CM, OM, DTD, KC. At the opening ceremony, Smuts stated the following We are gathered here today to open what may not unfairly be looked upon as a
memorial to the greatest united effort our country has been called upon to produce. Memorials, of course, have more than one use. They serve to remind us of what is past, of great
deeds of heroism and sacrifice; they also serve as a pointer, and sometimes as a warning to the future. It is in these senses that the South African War Museum may be regarded as a
memorial. It will remind us, I hope, not only of the part we played in the recent great struggle to save civilization, but also of the horrors, the loss of life and the devastation, and
serve as a warning to us to create a world in which we shall never have to use again the weapons of mass destruction we see here today, or those dreadful weapons to follow them.He was
referring to South Africa’s participation in the Second World War and had pinpointed the raison d’etre of the Museum’s existence. In 1975 the Museum’s name was changed to the
South African National Museum of Military History and its scope was expanded to include the history of all military conflict in which South Africans have played a part. The Museum
also serves as a popular and unusual venue for conferences and other functions. In 1999, following the restructuring process of national museums, the Museum was amalgamated together
with the Transvaal Museum of Natural History and the National Cultural History Museum into the Northern Flagship Institution. This institution was renamed Ditsong: Museums of
South Africa in 2009 and the Museum is now called the Ditsong National Museum of Military History.

Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe - A History Lesson by Thando Sipuye at Ditsong Museum
On Tuesday, 12th March 2019, Thando Sipuye was invited by Ditsong Museum of Cultural History in Pretoria to speak to Grade 11 Social Science learners from the Dr. W.F. Nkomo High School in Attridgeville about Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe.
The event took place at the exhibition space where the 'REMEMBER AFRICA' exhibition dedicated to the memory and legacy of Sobukwe is currently displayed at Ditsong.
Sipuye began by asking the learners to tell him anything they knew about Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe.
The entire group remained dead silent.
He queried why no one would say anything about Sobukwe. One of the learners mumbled from the back because asimazi.
Sipuye further queried whether they were taught anything about Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe and the PAC in their Social Science curriculum.
They all responded with an astounding and emphatic NO!
The learners said they did not know who Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was and that they are not taught, and have never been taught anything about Sobukwe.
Sipuye questioned what exactly they were taught in the social science classes/curriculum.
They said they were taught about African empires like Mali, Shongai and Ghana. About Muslim women. About the Mogul empire.
Sipuye then asked whether they were taught anything about Nelson Mandela in their class.
The entire class shouted, with much enthusiasm, YES.
He then asked them to tell him five things they are taught about Mandela. And without any hustles and enthused, they responded giving him five things they are taught about Nelson Mandela in their social science class.
Sipuye further queried whether the students knew who Bantu Steve Biko was.
A learner from the front shouted Black Consciousness.
Upon being asked what exactly they understood by Black Consciousness, they all remained silent yet again.
Sipuye asked whether they were taught anything about Steve Biko in their class and they affirmed that they were taught a bit about Biko. But not much.
To give the students a bit of historical background and context Sipuye then spoke briefly about Afrikan history, Black civilizations, slavery, colonialism and the shitstem of racism white supremacy.
Then he spoke about Robert Mangaliso and the PAC and his role in the Azanian liberation struggle.
After Sipuye spoke one student asked why they are not taught about other leaders like Sobukwe and only taught that only Mandela liberated South Africa.
This entire experience proved exactly what we have always know: that history is told from a singular monolithic perspective that merely glorifies ANC leaders only, Nelson Mandela in particular.
Black students and the youth are being brainwashed into thinking that Nelson Mandela and the ANC were the sole super-revolutionaries in this country, erasing wiping out the memory and legacies of many others that contributed in the continuous fight against white supremacy.
This is a grave injustice and we ought to challenge this government for the injustice of erasing other figures from the National Memory and Consciousness.
We know it's their deliberate intentions to tell one sided narratives and celebrate singular legacies whilst burying others in hope that the nation will forget.
Sobukwe refuses to be forgotten. Cannot be forgotten.
The National Heritage Monument launched
A first for the country the department of Arts and Culture has launched a National Heritage Monument, that will host statues of historical figures. Minister Nathi Mthethwa opened the monument in Groenkloof Nature Reserve in Pretoria this morning.
