THE NATIONAL LIBRARY OF FINLAND • KANSALLISKIRJASTO, Helsinki
The main building of the National Library of Finland in Helsinki was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in 1840. The collection of the library originates from about twenty volumes that were given to the Turku Academy at the time of its establishment in 1640.
In 2017, the National Library's collection included about three million books and three million other publications - more than 115 kilometers of shelfs.
The main building of the library is located next to the Senate Square, and the main building of the University of Helsinki. Its entrance is opposite the western entrance of the Cathedral.

Carl Ludvig Engel suunnitteli Helsinkiin Kansalliskirjaston päärakennuksen vuonna 1840. Kirjaston kokoelman alkuna pidetään Turun kimnaasin noin kahdenkymmenen niteen kirjakokoelmaa, joka siirtyi Turun akatemialle sen perustamisen yhteydessä vuonna 1640.
Vuonna 2017 Kansalliskirjaston kokoelmaan kuului noin kolme miljoonaa kirjaa sekä kolme miljoonaa muuta julkaisua. Hyllykilometrejä on yli 115.
Kansalliskirjaston päärakennus sijaitsee Senaatintorin ja Helsingin
yliopiston päärakennuksen naapurissa. Rakennuksen sisäänkäynti on Tuomiokirkon sisäänkäyntiä vastapäätä.

MFA Friday Clip: Finnish Architecture. Review 2018 - The National Library of Finland Restoration
MFA Friday Clip series presents videos of the latest biennial review projects. This week theme: The National Library of Finland restoration by LPR Architects.
The National Library restoration project was based on a detailed survey of the building’s history. Finland’s top experts were called in to carry out the conservation, and the entire restoration process was documented thoroughly. Although the architects strove to be subtle and conserve as much as they could, there were inevitable technical challenges.
The building is widely regarded as Finland’s most beautiful old library. However, it has suffered from damp problems throughout its history and the team had no choice but to repair the resultant structural damage. Added to this were the new functional and technical demands listed by the client, such as self-service facilities, wheelchair access and digital connectivity. New facilities were installed in the basement by cutting into the underlying bedrock. The impressive new underground annex contains an elegant cloakroom and locker room.
About the review:
Finland’s biennial architectural review presents a selection of recent projects showcasing new trends and high standards of excellence in Finnish architecture. The review is organized by the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA and the Alvar Aalto Foundation.
This year’s jury was chaired by the Portuguese architect Gonçalo Byrne, a recent member of the jury that selected the winner of the Mies van der Rohe Award. The two other members of the Biennial Review jury are Maire Mattinen, architect and Anni Vartola, architect and critic.
The 16 shortlisted projects offer an example of recent accomplishments in high-level contemporary planning, renovation, and sustainable, responsible design.

The library is situated in the Töölönlahti district next to Helsinki Music Centre and Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art.
Oodi has room for both quiet and more noisy activities.
1st floor: events, coffee and meetings
The active public facilities and large event venues, such as the cinema and the multi-purpose hall, are located on the first floor. The busy entrance hall forms the floor of transition and partners, and also contains the quick library services.
2nd floor: workshops, learning and interaction
The second floor is dedicated to work, learning by doing, interaction and sharing time with others, and has studios, game rooms, urban workshops, work and meeting rooms, and group work facilities. The floor also has tranquil rooms for taking breaks.
3rd floor: book heaven, Citizens’ Balcony and children’s section
The top floor is a place to relax and unwind. Underneath the undulating ceiling, you can have a break from your daily chores, have some coffee and admire the view from the Citizens’ Balcony. This floor resembles a traditional library the most. The children’s section is also located here...

Helsinki University Library: Everyone's Happy Here

SUMMARY
=======
The National Library of Finland (Finnish: Kansalliskirjasto, Swedish: Nationalbiblioteket) is the foremost research library in Finland. Administratively the library is part of the University of Helsinki. Until 1 August 2006, it was known as the Helsinki University Library.
The National Library is responsible for storing the Finnish cultural heritage. By Finnish law, the National Library is a legal deposit library and receives copies of all printed matter, as well as audiovisual materials excepting films, produced in Finland or for distribution in Finland. These copies are then distributed by the Library to its own national collection and to reserve collections of five other university libraries. Also, the National Library has the obligation to collect and preserve materials published on the Internet.
Any person who lives in Finland may register as a user of the National Library and borrow library material. The publications in the national collection, however, are not loaned outside the library. The library also is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of books published in the Russian Empire of any library in the world.
The National Library is located in Helsinki, close to Senaatintori square. The oldest part of the library complex, designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, dates back to 1844. The newer extension Rotunda, designed by architect Gustaf Nyström, was completed in 1906. The bulk of the collection is, nonetheless, stored in Kirjaluola (Finnish for Bookcave), a 57,600-cubic-metre (2,030,000 cu ft) underground bunker drilled into solid rock, 18 metres (59 ft) below the library.
