REPATRIATED ARTWORKS DISPLAYED AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM LAGOS
The works were taken out of Nigeria without permission. They had been gone for long. The National Commission for Museums and Monuments developed a strategy which was pragmatic, reconciliatory and collaborative in getting the works back. Every Nigerian is encouraged to visit the National Museum, Lagos to see our returned lost treasures.

Eden Of Arts And Culture Exhibition By National Museum
The National Museum in Lagos opened its doors to showcase its first exhibition for the year, the first to focus exclusively on traditional art of the ethnic groups dwelling along the Cross River Basin which stretches to the Cameroun Mountain.
Objects of trade, ancestral worship, terracotta, mask and other items, which are just a few of the works, found among the rich cultural collections in Nigeria are exhibited.
The show, titled Eden of Arts and Culture, highlighted a large section of what the museum has in its kitty while displaying talent that has been in existence for decades.

Emeka Ogboh’s Market Symphony at National Museum of African Art
Nigerian artist Emeka Ogboh brings his internationally recognized sound art to the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in the new work Market Symphony.
A site-specific commission by the museum, Market Symphony draws on the commercial cries and urban ambiance of Balogun, a sprawling open-air market in Lagos, Africa’s largest and most populated city. Ogboh’s “soundscape” lets visitors experience the distinctive sounds of this vibrant Nigerian metropolis and the traders who drive its daily economy, transporting us from the hush of the gallery to a commercial hive approximately 5,407 miles away.
Lagos'' historic buildings crumbling into dust

8. SOUNDBITE (English) John Godwin, Architect :
We use to have building bylaws. And you have to say that in many areas of Lagos, those building bylaws have been totally ignored.
Lagos, 1 April, 2012
9. Various of The Water House, built by Candido da Rocha
10. Various of the Doherty Villa built circa 1895
11. SOUNDBITE (English) John Godwin, Architect :
A lot of those old houses, in fact 99.9 percent have disappeared. But there are still a few. And I am glad to say the NCMM, the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, a few of the officers in that organisation, are trying very hard to preserve some of them. They are part of not just their heritage but our heritage as well.
Lagos, 25 March, 2012
12. Wide of Western House in Lagos built circa 1967 - the only surviving office building with steel frame
13. Tilt down of Independence House, a 25-storey building now empty - a gift from the British to Nigeria ahead of its independence in 1960
14. Top shot of crumbling historic building
15. SOUNDBITE (English) Desmond Majekodunmi, President of Legacy (organisation working to protect the city''s architectural history) :
There was a strong Portuguese influence here, and you see some remnants of that. There was a strong Brazilian influence and you see quite a lot of that still displayed on Lagos Island. A lot of these were returned slaves who had now decided they were going to settle in Lagos and they brought back with them their own building culture. You also see the edifices of colonial tropical architecture.
Lagos, 1 April, 2012
16. Various of Ilojo Bar built circa 1880 - an example of a Brazilian style building built by ex-slaves returning from Brazil
Lagos, 25 March 2012
17. SOUNDBITE (English) John Godwin, Architect :
We will restore Ilojo Bar, which is one of the old Brazilian buildings, and many others that are around. When I say many (holds up hands) count them on two hands, something like that. Still good, still got families there who has some respect for their family and would like to keep them. But they need finance to do that. I mean Ilojo Bar is going to cost over fifty million naira (318,000 US dollars) really to put it right.
Lagos, 1 April, 2012
18. Various of The Church Missionary Society (CMS) Bookshop house and tower built in 1973
19. Statue of Nigerian nationalist Herbert Macaulay
20. Wide CMS building
Lagos, 25 March 2012
21. SOUNDBITE (English) Desmond Majekodunmi, President of Legacy (organisation working to protect the city''s architectural history) :
In this age now when we are looking for carbon friendly buildings, some of these old British colonial structures were about the most carbon neutral buildings you would ever find anywhere.
22. Various of Old Secretariat building
23. Various of Maja house

Nigeria's Headless Statue of Fela Kuti
A new statue of Nigeria's most famous musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been erected in Lagos state to celebrate the legend and also the city of Lagos at 50-years-old.
► Subscribe to BattaBox on YouTube:
However, there's one striking thing about the statue - it has no head or hands! And it's become quite controversial among Nigerians.
It was deliberately chosen to leave the statue headless as an artistic expression of freedom is never complete while thinking about the work Fela Kuti achieved and the work of freedom is never complete, explains a plaque at the base of the large yellow statue.
So, BattaBox asked Nigerians for their interpretation of the headless Fela Kuti statue
On my way coming I was looking at it, and it looks like it's pointing somewhere ahead, says one guy passing by.
It looks very nice, but the problem is there is no fingers, hands or head!
It's cool but it doesn't have a head! Maybe that's because Nigeria does not have a head! laughs one woman.
The tall, striking statue has been named the Freedom Statue and the plague at the base of the Lagos statue reads on:
This striking pose of the iconic Fela Anikulapo Kuti is the true essence of freedom. He is a legend who fought for freedom from government oppressions through persistence, determination, and patience as seen in his spoken word and lyrical music.
Many more new statues have appeared in Lagos, Nigeria to celebrate Lagos at 50 years old, and so we sent our BattaBox presenters Folly and Bolly to check out them out for you!
Another Lagos state is of eight canoes on the Lagos Airport road decorated with slang and depicting Lagos life and waterways - remembering that Lagos is a town on the water with many ancient coast line traditions. The statues are 30ft high, and are life size canoes made of fibreglass.
Don't forget Lagos state is called the State of Aquatic Splendour - and Nigerians love the concept behind them:
It gives me inspiration that Lagos statae respects my community, says one guy.
What do you think of the new statues celebrating Lagos Mega-City at 50-years-old? And what do you think - should the Fela Kuti statue have a head?

Obasanjo's Presidential Library Review !!! Best Museum in Nigeria?
I was opportune to review Obasanjo's Presidential Library. Discovered he had a museum inside the building. I was blown away by what I found in Obasanjo's Presidential Museum located in Abeokuta.
There were precious artifacts that whose beauty would blow you away, clothes of his late wife Stella Obasanjo, there were also gifts from his friends and allies from near and far. it was an amazing experience and a sight to see. It is also the first Presidential Museum in Africa and the best museum in Nigeria by all standards.
