Opal Collection photographed for Damien Hirst Science Limited Black Opal Crystal Opal White Opal
I was contacted by the Science Limited the Damien Hirst company regarding our opal collection. He wanted a image of different types of opals on a black background. The image is then to be put into a possible run of paintings at Damien Hirst's discretion.
So i collated 61 opals weighting in around 715 carats of all different colours, patterns and grades. These were placed at random to produce the layout in the video then photographed with a Hasselblad H4D with a single light source. This was then ran through CS6 with very little edit than getting the black background clean and tidy.

"South Australia has the perfect climate for opal creation and many of our pieces are the result of opal forming and replacing the fossils of ancient sea creatures" Oldman said. "So, where you see a specimen that seems to echo shapes of an ancient creature and pieces that look like a sea bed, like this Crouch opal, that is because our land made it possible for opal to form and fill in spaces left behind behind animals, water, shells, et cetera."
