Australian Opal—A Precious Gemstone Unearthed
It is Australia's national gemstone, has a history dating back to the age of the dinosaurs, and has adorned the crowns of kings. Queen Victoria was known to love opals. Shakespeare referred to the opal as a miracle and queen of gems.
The Greek word 'opalus' means 'change of color' and it's the colors that make each opal unique.
Scott Coggan is the manager of Opals Down Under on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, and has been cutting opals for almost 20 years. He explains how opals began, millions of years ago.

Opal is a silica hydrate. It starts as a water solution, it seeps through different sedimentary layers, picks up different types of silica and a few other minerals in its process, comes down to a base level where it cannot permeate any further, then it starts to solidify in fossil cavities and cracks in the rocks into a glass like substance.
As evidence of this ancient history, the National Opal Collection in Sydney has an opalised skeleton of a pliosaur that dates back 110 million years.
The initial prehistoric mix of silica spheres is what determines the colors in each stone.

It's a white light coming into the stone and refracting out as a color spectrum depending on the size of the little silica spheres. So the larger the spheres, you get higher up the spectrum—reds, oranges—they're the rare colors. The smaller the spheres—blues and purples.
Australia mines over 95 percent of the world's opal production, with buyers coming from all over.

Germany, England, New Zealand, Switzerland is another good market, and the Chinese would be our emerging market.
Queensland boulder opal is a favorite for many buyers.

The Queensland boulder opal is by far our most popular because of its unique shapes, colors. We probably sell more of the Coober Pedy white crystal opal because of its cost factor. But for unique one-off pieces, definitely the Queensland boulder opal.
Each opal field has its own unique type of stone.

Coober Pedy is more the lighter crystal opal—white opal. Lightning Ridge is famous for its black opal—the rarest of all the opals. Queensland—we have the boulder opal.
After learning more about opals, it is hard not to marvel at the natural beauty of this unique gemstone.

The president of the opal Association recently unveiled the world first opal carpet.It consists of 400 Australian opals attached to a Kashmir carpet and framed.The opals are from all the main opal fields in Australia.There are black opals from Lightning Rdige nsw.Boulder opals from Queensland and white opals from Coober pedy .The feature stone is a 45.40 carat solid black opal from Lightning Ridge.The carpet will be displayed in local and over seas gem and jewellery shows.
