Round The Island Yacht Race 2018 (Cowes - The Needles) - Mavic Pro Drone Views
The Round The Island yacht race around the Isle of Wight is quite a spectacle for everyone. You don't need to be into sailing to enjoy the fantastic views of more that 1200 yachts sailing the whole way around the Isle of Wight.
This year I thought I would try and get some aerial shots using my DJI Mavic Pro, so managed to drag myself out of bed and get down to Cowes seafront around 6:50am.
The weather was fantastic for watching, clear blue skies, around 22c (at 7am!) and hardly any wind. Er.... That's the bit though that perhaps, from a sailing point of view, wasn't so good for anyone who wanted a fast race, so I think most people settled down for a nice long and relaxing day :)
It was a shame that most of the yachts decided to start far out away from the Squadron Line in order to catch more wind, would have made better shots if they were closer to shore, but hey ho.
After using one battery at Cowes, I then moved to Fort Victoria to get some shots as they sailed through the narrower channel between Hurst Castle and Fort Albert.
Then I moved onto the Needles, which regardless of the yacht racing, was lovely! Hardly any wind, clear skies, hot and beautiful views :)
First time that I had ever flown the drone right out over the lighthouse, so couldn't help getting a few to many shots of the Needles while I was there, but you gotta grab every opportunity :)
I'm fairly pleased with the end results, so now looking forward to trying to get some interesting yacht footage during Cowes Week.

The Needles is a row of three stacks of chalk that rise about 30m out of the sea off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, United Kingdom, close to Alum Bay, and part of Totland, the westernmost civil parish of the Isle of Wight.
The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation. Built in, it has been automated since 1994.
The waters and adjoining seabed form part of the Needles Marine Conservation Zone and the Needles along with the shore and heath above are part of the Headon Warren and West High Down Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The formation takes its name from a fourth needle-shaped pillar called Lot's Wife, which collapsed in a storm in.
The remaining rocks are not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck.
The Needles were featured on the BBC Two TV programme Seven Natural Wonders (2005) as one of the wonders of Southern England.

Needles Lighthouse
The Needles lighthouse on the western tip on the Isle of Wight, UK. Situated at the end of a long chalk ridge, many boats had come to ground here. Goose Rock, seen partially submerged at 2.37 has claimed many lives. The area immediately west of the lighthouse has also seen wrecks. There is a YouTube video somewhere of some yachts grounding by the lighthouse. One wreck you see is the Varvassi-
